NI Episode 12: Lagos' traffic jams, our countryman in Kent and Fred the cautious US Returnee Print E-mail
Sunday, 15 January 2006

Can you guess how many different uniformed agencies are on Lagos streets controlling tr affic, stopping motorists and supposedly battling the jams? We look at the various reasons why the average Lagosian wastes two extra hours in traffic everyday, including the views of Mr. Omiyale, Sector Commander of the FRSC. He says "Nigerians are playing a role" in bribing his officers for driving licences.

We also meet Tunde Iyowu, who's opted for UK's rural lifestyle and Fred Allison who's taking his time to make a very gradual move from the US to Nigeria. He's made five fact-finding trips so far.

Presented by delectable Dakore Egbuson

Enjoy!

I think "Nigeria International" should potray the real picture of "abroad" to our citizens back home without confirming the cliche that everything oversea is rosy. Definitely the Pharmacist in Kent collecting Wine bottles or CDs does not reflect how most Nigerians live in the diaspora. Many are busy looking for "kpali" because they were not fortunate to be born in Europe or America.

I agree with the last post. While it is true that some Nigerians are doing well abroad, it is pertinent to make it clear that a lot are into dodgy businesses. This is because many are still desperate about leaving Nigeria without realising the consequences of getting and living abroad. Nice show!

>> I think "Nigeria International" should potray the real picture of "abroad" to our citizens back home...

Yes that's one of NI's key objectives to portray the spectrum of our existence abroad.

It would be wrong to focus exclusively on those battling immigration problems NVS/NI Episode 9 - http://www.nigeriavillagesq..., where that reality is depicted in graphic detail>. Also in following episode, <NVS/NI Episode 10 http://www.nigeriavillagesq...>, we have Angela, a US resident expressing how Nigerians back home don't believe her when she tells them how difficult life is.

In fact, this (our 20th episode) is the first time we've profiled a Nigerian abroad in obviously comfortable circumstances, in his home environment. And we've done it particularly to show some breadth. We don't all live in congested metropolis, with all the stress and problems that come with that.

We can't aim to depict the whole truth in every single episode, but we thank you for watching and assure you that over time, you'll get "the full picture".

And thanks also for commenting - it's always very useful to us!

Nice job, NI. I have'nt seen all of your features, but I saw one past episode where the city of Lagos was also the focus. Are there any features on a city other than Lagos? Like Benin or Calabar or Enugu? If there are, could you furnish me with the episode number(s)? Thank you.
