A Nigerian basketball player, Michael Ojo, who previously played for Red Star Belgrade, has passed away at 27.

Red Star’s spokesperson, Igor Vujicin, who disclosed the sad news in a statement on Friday, said the basketball star breathed his last during a training session in Serbia.

“We are deeply saddened by the news”, AFP quoted him as saying.

It was not immediately clear what led to his death as of the time this report was filed but local media attributed the development to heart attack.

The deceased kickstarted his basketball journey at Florida State University in the United States but would later depart for Europe for his professional career.

He had impressive stints with the Belgrade team, FMP Zeleznik before moving to European giants Red Star, where he established himself as a prominent figure during his two seasons at the club before leaving.

In the statement, Red Star described his death as a huge loss, noting the development had affected management and staff of the club.

The statement added: “The sudden and shocking death of Michael Ojo has deeply affected everyone — players, coaches and the management of a club that accepted him from the first day, and that he considered his own.”
