Two members of the victorious 2013 U-17 World Cup winning Golden Eaglets – Akinjide Idowu Elijah and Abubakar Aliyu Audu will be hosted by Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State at a reception in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Defender Abubukar and central midfielder Idowu are Kogi indigenes who were members of coach Manu Garba's Golden Eaglets that won Nigeria its fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in November 2013.
In a chat with Goal, the state commissioner of sports, Mr Puke Anthony said the Kogi State government has agreed for Wednesday to host and honour the two players for making the state proud.
He explained that the decision of the state governor was in view of transforming sports and empowering talents that have made the state proud.
“We have decided to host the two Eaglets players on Wednesday. The governor who travelled is expected to return on Tuesday and then host the boys the next day. We are also aware the two players are due to move to Europe in a couple of days,” Anthony said.
Abubakar hails from Ankpa Local Government Area while Akinjide is from Yagba West Local Government Area and both played for Muntunchi Football Academy, Kaduna and Nigeria Youth Soccer Academy, Calabar respectively.
Confirming to Goal, Abubakar expressed great excitement at the invitation of the state government.
“I am happy and honoured to be invited to be hosted by the state governor. I never knew the state government will recognize us let alone honour us. This shows we have a sports loving governor,” Abubakar said.
Governor Wada notably hosted the inaugural Nigeria Women Premier League Congress. Mid last year, he rewarded the athletes and officials that won various medals for the state at national competitions with scholarships and cash awards.
