Chinedu Onyeuku, Former Nigerian National Basketball Player Shot Dead While Robbing A Home In TexasA former member of the Nigerian national basketball team was shot and killed last week while breaking into a Plano residence, police said Wednesday.

Chinedu Onyeuku, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene on the 1500 block of Rio Grande Street. His shooter said he saw Onyeuku and another unidentified man break his glass patio door and try to enter his home. The other burglar ran away after Onyeuku was shot, police said.

Plano police spokesman David Tilley said that “multiple people” were in the residence at the time of the shooting. No one inside, including the shooter, was hurt.

Onyeuku was born in Lagos, but moved to the United States when he was six. He played college basketball at Illinois State University and then had a short semi-pro career, including a stop on the Arlington Bulldogs of the American Basketball Association. Plano police listed his hometown as Omaha.

A statement from the Nigeria Basketball Federation said Onyeuku played for the Nigerian team that qualified for the 2012 Olympics during a tournament in Venezuela. He was not on the Olympic roster, however.

“[Onyeuku's] passion for playing with D’Tigers was deep-seated and he will be greatly missed,” the statement said. “The federation joins his family and team mates to mourn a departed son, father, husband and great patriot.”

Police said the burglary and shooting is still being investigated and does not appear to be random. The incident happened around 3 a.m. on Nov. 21, but investigators waited to release details until Wednesday, saying that they needed to collect some “critical information” before it went public.

Was he really burglarizing the home? Why would he do that? The stroy said they are not sure why they are burglarizing the house. I'm not sure if there isn't more to this story. What an unfortunate end to a supposedly promising life?

As for the Nigerian Basketball Federation, what is the meaning of this

How can an alledged buglar be a \\"great patriot\\"? They could have done without that part unless they know for sure that he wasn't buglarizing and would be absolved eventually.

Lady Val,

I thought I was the only one taken back by that statement; they stated someone was killed while commiting a crime and you call him a great patriot of what crime
The jokers were trashed at the Games no be small...reading the piece written on him he did not play anyway.Sometimes these articles are hard to pin point the truth. Its a shame a life was lost regardless him being a hero or a Burglar. The crime happened in the USA so they do not have that information he being innocent since his accomplice is still at large.
Na over sabi on behalf of the Nigerian Basketball Federation.

Yes..oh !

Africans in diasporas are most satanic and devilish you can imagine !
A brother in law of mine the other day, was almost gone at the hands of a wicked spouse who nearly stabbed him to death in their matrimonial home. Unknown to him that the wife is keeping a kitchen knife under the mattress in the master bedroom.
This couple have been having several well known incidents of domestic violence and the local police knows them as a very disturbed family in the comunity.
The guy insisted on staying put in the house he saved all his money and bought before marrying this woman, claiming that he has no where to go and currently unemployed and can't move out of the house as the lady wished.
They are playing this hanky panky thing, cat and mouse game of fight today, make up tomorrow. And unknown that this woman has taken this animousity to another levels and now really wished him dead for real. As he lay asleep in the room, the woman aimed for his chest with a sharp kitchen knife, only missing his vital organs by inches.
The rest would have been history now, if not by the mercies and Grace of God.
The poor man would have been accused of rape or break in or burglary as the reason why the wife killed him in self defence !!!

My prayers goes to the family and loved ones of this poor young man. Only God can truly reveal the real circumstances of his tragic end and this horrific waste of life in youth.

Ex-Nigerian Basketball Player Killed In Home InvasionNovember 28, 2012 3:25 PM

Basketball, Chinedu Onyeuku, Nigeria, plano, Texas

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - A former member of the Nigerian national basketball team was shot and killed after breaking into a Plano home last week, according to police.
Plano Police Officer David Tilley has confirmed that Chinedu Onyeuku was shot and killed by a resident after Onyeuku allegedly smashed a glass patio door and entered the Plano residence.
Police were dispatched to a reported burglary in the 1500 block of Rio Grande Drive around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21. When police arrived, Onyeuku, 29, was found shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's a pretty complicated investigation," said Tilley. "The delay was based on a lot of critical information and evidence that needed to be gathered."
The resident reported that at least two black males were on his patio prior to the glass door being smashed. When Onyeuku entered the home, the resident shot him with his shotgun. The other suspect (s) fled the scene on foot.
The homeowner will not be arrested, while a grand jury will determine whether or not the shooting was justified.
According to TeamNigeriaBasketball.com, Onyeuku was first invited to the Nigerian team in 2009 and helped pave the way for Nigeria's participation in last summer's Olympic games. He played for the team during the FIBA Africa Championships, where he averaged 3 points per game.
The 6-foot-3 guard played one season at Illinois State University. MoreI do not believe that this guy was a burglar, there is more to this story we do not know yet recently, he spent time playing with the Arlington Bulldogs of the American Basketball Association (ABA).

Agree. Story seems made up and fishy. Why did the police wait a week to make a statement? Why did they wait for the news to break on the web first? Did they think it was unknown vagrant and not a known basketball player? The family should request for a transcript of the 9-1-1 call and timeline.

Unbelievable! The police had better come out with a reasonable motive for the killing. The burglary thing just does not click.

I doubt the veracity of this report. Texans are notorious for shooting first and making up stories afterwards. I would encourage his family to make a big stink and push for an independent investigation by the FBI.

Right now, this is the most apt comment.

Yum, I hope you know American law as much as you know Nigerian law.

Tonsoyo, the story get as e be, but, IF the man indeed was breaking into the house... If it is true that he smashed a door / window to gain entry...

I am not so surprised the story is being delayed, or it is "complicated". Putting on my prophets hat and looking into my crystal ball I see some blurry images...

Sadly, woman / pickin problem is coming up in my crystal ball... not sure what kind...

...Onyeuku knew somebody in the house and had some kind of relationship...

...once upon a time he had a key and entered the house in plain sight...

... a serious katakata came to burst to full ground and he was no longer welcome...

... he was dating a babe in the house... him papa no gree...??? Shot him...???

...he was dating a woman in the house who kicked him out and embraced a new shotgun welding omoboy...

... the guy moved in with his homies and turned the house upside down... the now repentant woman calls out to Onyeuku for help...

...poor bros thinks he is Shaft and can go and rescue damsel in distress... she not tell am say bobo get shotgun...

.... don't forget he might have helped the woman get the house, so how dare she lock him out...

Anyways, this my crystal ball is very hazy...
