London Bridge Is Falling Down....

Mayhem spreads all across London for third day!

Looting, vandalism and violence have rocked Britain for the third day spreading beyond Tottenham and Enfield to reach Brixton, according to media reports.

The gathering of around 200 protesters demanding answers over the death of Mark Duggan, who was shot dead by police on Thursday, turned to a full-scale mayhem around 12 hours later which jolted the British shaky establishment once again.

London burned while Prime Minister David Cameron was having fun with his family in a luxurious villa in Tuscany, Italy and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was quietly recovering at home from his getaway in sunny France.

But the person whose economic policies may have been playing a role in triggering these riots, George Osbourne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer remained enjoying himself at a hotel somewhere in Beverly Hills.

Police said they have arrested more than 160 people across London so far. They also said that dozens of people have been injured, among then at least 35 police officers, of whom 8 had been accepted to hospital for further treatment.

">
Meanwhile, the riots are happening only a few miles from the Olympic park that will welcome millions of visitors in less than a year. Britain and the capital city of London will host International Olympics games in 2012.

The riots also come at a time of deteriorating situation for Britons as the pain from economic stagnation is exacerbated by deep public spending cuts and tax increases aimed at eliminating a budget deficit that peaked at more than 10 percent of GDP.

British politicians swiftly blamed petty criminals for the violence, but neighborhood residents said anger at high unemployment and cuts in public services, coupled with resentment of the police, played a significant role.

"Tottenham is a deprived area. Unemployment is very, very high ... they are frustrated," said Uzodinma Wigwe, 49, who was made redundant from his job as a cleaner recently.

Re: Tottenham in London set ablaze by rioters after a black man is shot by Police
Very sad events, as seen on TV. Breakdown in relations between the Police and the community. Both sides clearly demonstrated a lack of respect and appreciation for each other.

Listening to folks interviewed by the TV crew, unemployment and a lack of opprtunities, plus recent govt cuts in youth facilities, have all combined to put folks on the edge.

Fresh reports on the radio just now indicate outbreak of unrest this evening in Enfield, another London district.

What a shame that Theresa May does not feel she needs to cut her Vacation short to deal with the issues at home, as of this Morning it had spread to Brixton!!! What about the man who lost his life on thursday ?

I am appalled that the young yobs looting and rioting are doing it for their selfish needs not proving any point or making a stand against police men thinking they are above the law!! The fools were all caught on CCTV. so they will be caught, they have damaged all the local businesses in the area. The sad thing is that they are destroying their own community.

Lack of communicating with the community regarding the shooting caused all these problems it has now snowballed into a bigger issue,

Looking at it on the television seeing young kids looting breaking into stores, they were having a shopping spree from looting and even to the point seeing people trying on all stars sneakers to make sure they are the right size if that is not takine the Piss I do not know what is.....

There are so many problems that escalated into this lacks of jobs, lack of focus for the youths, the economic hardship, cutting of different youth programs, this is not a black issue it is a general issue that the British leaders need to deal with , the earlier these people wake up and smell the coffee the better.

The initial peaceful protest by the family of Mike Duggan (killed by the Police on Thursday) was quickly hijacked by criminal elements.

The smashing and burning was just to create access and have a smokescreen. Looting was the main intention. As usual with greedy criminals, they turned upon themselves and started stealing what somebody else stole from the stores...

Yeah, they are all caught on camera. The govt may need to hire a prison ship to contain all of them after they are sentenced.

Re: Tottenham in London set ablaze by rioters after a black man is shot by Police
I have no problems with people taking out their anger on the police but to loot and burn your own community buildings and businesses which most probably employ some members of their families and are innocent is just crazy. Also without a shadow of a doubt criminal opportunists have taken over. This is not SOLELY a black vs Police issues. The footage seen so shows a cross section of races involved in this madness.

Once again the MET have committed an unlawful shooting as if reports are to believed ballistics initial test show that two shells found including the one that injured the Police man was a police issued bullet. Policing is not an easy job but you cannot have outlaws as police men. The way the MET behave involving gun crime makes them look as bad as the criminals. Also once again the MET have reacted slowly in the disgraceful way they handled the initial peaceful process which I must add had nothing to do with criminal delinquents who decided to cause mayhem no thanks to our institutionalized racist and incompetent MET Police force.

Enoch Powell must be laughing. Grim times.

"Officers responding to sporadic disorder in a number of boroughs made more than 100 arrests throughout last night and early this morning," Scotland Yard said on Monday, after 61 people were arrested on Saturday night.

"Officers are shocked at the outrageous level of violence directed against them," a police spokesman said.

Police deployed extra officers in flashpoint areas on Sunday night, but there was still widespread looting, with young men seen walking out of ransacked stores laden with electrical goods.

A shop assistant originally from Africa was quoted by a Russian newspaper in Moscow as saying: “I can imagine this kind of thing happening in Somalia but to see it in London was strange."

Meanwhile, the riots are happening only a few miles from the Olympic park that will welcome millions of visitors in less than a year. Britain and the capital city of London will host International Olympics games in 2012.

Hope our people are safe with all this street terror!

The gap between the rich and the poor is so wide now that Governments are literally balancing on kegs of gunpowder. From unjust demoncrazy to dictatorship it's all the same. These riots with looting is not cuz of a gun shot, but because of he effect of the neocons, turning the masses into slaves.

A very sad time for London and other parts of England.
I'm not so sure this can just be explained solely as mindless violence however.
The government cuts are clearly biting some more than others.
Is this really the work of mindless yobs with no cause or the backlash from a frustrated and marginalised youth who are taking the brunt of recent government austerity measures?

Our government has lost control of the streets. Keen on bringing order to Afghanistan and Libya, but can't protect civilians in Ealing. Cut police and emergency services enough and everything falls apart. Time to re-think your priorities Mr Cameron.

Na lie! Where were they when the Boko Haram made a huge bonfire before the police headquarters in Abuja? There is a lesson to learn from this incident. If the cop who shot that black guy had relaxed his trigger finger, things would not go out of hand so much.

Violence begets violence.

Bomb blast & quelling riots are totally different & this was in a lighter mood.

The looting, burning & trashing just have no connect with the unfortunate death.

Yes,I knew you were in a lighter mood. The riots are taking such threatening dimensions that UK authorities are considering releasing troops unto the streets if things dont subside soon. So,its like their own Boko Haram fire bombers at work.

But unlike our own peculiar system, more than a hundred people have been arrested and will be tried.

I think there had been simmering tension beneath the political surface in Tottenham
and other cities for long. The killing of Mike Duggan, a Black father of three should
be seen as a catalyst that helped the aggrieved to discharge their accumulated layers
of bad feelings.

The statement credited to the Home Secretary Theresa May is not helpful in the prevailing anarchic atmosphere.

Millions of pounds that will be budgeted to fix the ruin caused by the angry mob will be enough to construct a factory that could employ hundreds!

Are you sure you're watching the same news as everyone else?

Where have you seen the govt deploy tanks and warplanes to shoot its people?

Even the riot policemen quelling the mayhem are not armed, except with batons and shields.

I can assure you, if Assad of Syria, Gaddafi of Libya and the mad men of Iran had handled their protesters the way London is handling its own, the world wouldn't be condemning Arab leadership and sending NATO to protect the people the way it has in Libya and preparing to do in Syria.

Iran Protests: Twitter, the Medium of the Movement

The U.S. State Department doesn't usually take an interest in the maintenance schedules of dotcom start-ups. But over the weekend, officials there reached out to Twitter and asked them to delay a network upgrade that was scheduled for Monday night. The reason? To protect the interests of Iranians using the service to protest the presidential election that took place on June 12. Twitter moved the upgrade to 2 p.m. P.T. Tuesday afternoon — or 1:30 a.m. Tehran time.

The Obama administration, while insisting it is not meddling in Iran, yesterday confirmed it had asked Twitter to remain open to help anti-government protesters.

The company had planned a temporary shutdown to overhaul its service in the middle of the night on Monday but the US state department put in a request to postpone this.

Research In Motion said in a statement earlier this week: "As in all markets around the world where BlackBerry is available, we cooperate with local telecommunications operators, law enforcement and regulatory officials."

Bros,

some villager here have mentioned your intelligence, even though evidence of it remains in doubt most times when i read your posts....

Where is the intelligence in comparing the way the British govt is handling the riots in the streets with the way Arab leaders handled their own demonstrators?

It is the right of a people to protest in anger...

it is not the right of any govt to declare war on its people and send heavy artillery against unarmed civilians, the way the Arab leadership have done consistently.

when you criticize, i expect you to do so objectively and rationally... i simply do not see it in this post above.

No defense is necessary, since am not a govt spokesperson..

But note the underlined and highlighted words..

the British and US govts appealed to a private firm.. the operational word here being "appealed". Meaning a request was made.

No coercion was used to make the BB firm or twitter firm comply, that means they have a right to refuse....
