Letter to Secretary Clinton On Her Forthcoming Trip to Nigeria

Letter to Secretary Clinton On Her Forthcoming Trip to Nigeria

The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton

Secretary of State

United States Department of State

Dear Secretary Clinton,

In light of your forthcoming trip to Nigeria, we would like to bring to your attention some of our recent research findings and recommendations for some key human rights challenges facing Nigeria. We hope that you will take the opportunity during your visit to address these issues with your counterparts and speak publicly about these and other human rights concerns.

Boko Haram and Inter-Communal Violence

More than 1,400 people in northern and central Nigeria have been killed in attacks by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram since 2010. Five days of violence in July 2009 left more than 800 people dead. Government security forces captured the group's leader at the time, Mohammed Yusuf, and summarily executed him along with dozens of other Boko Haram suspects. Since the group reemerged in 2010, their increasingly deadly attacks have targeted police and other government security agents, Christians and churches, and Muslims who are critical of the group or perceived as collaborating with the government. Security agents have rounded up hundreds of individuals and routinely detained them incommunicado without charge or trial. Security forces have also been implicated in extrajudicial killings of Boko Haram suspects and in other detention-related abuses. The group claims they are carrying out attacks against the police in retaliation for security force abuses.

In addition to the Boko Haram attacks, several thousand people - both Muslims and Christians - have died in inter-communal violence in the past four years in Nigeria's volatile "middle-belt" region - particularly in Kaduna and Plateau states. Mobs have hacked to death many of their victims based simply on their ethnic or religious identity, but rarely has anyone been prosecuted for these massacres. Nigeria's government has failed to break the cycle of killings by holding the perpetrators accountable. In addition, it has failed to address the root causes of inter-communal violence, including state and local government policies that exacerbate existing ethnic divisions by discriminating against members of ethnic groups they classify as "non-indigenes" - people who cannot trace their ancestry to what are said to be the original inhabitants of an area.

We urge you to press the Nigerian authorities to break the cycle of violence in northern Nigeria as well as in Kaduna and Plateau states by calling on the government to rein in abusive police and soldiers, and prosecute, without delay, all those responsible for the violence. You should call on the authorities to ensure that the population at risk of further attacks in northern and central Nigeria is protected from violence. And you should urge the Nigerian authorities to end divisive state and local government policies that discriminate against "non-indigenes" who reside within their jurisdictions.

Corruption

Despite Nigeria's tremendous oil wealth, endemic government corruption and poor governance have robbed many Nigerians of their rights to health and education. These problems are most acute in the north - the country's poorest region - where widespread poverty and unemployment, sustained by corruption, and state-sponsored abuses have created an environment in which militant groups thrive.

Nigeria's main anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has since 2005 filed corruption charges against 35 nationally prominent political figures, including 20 former state governors. The EFCC has secured four convictions of high-level officials, but they faced relatively little or no prison time. Despite the endemic corruption, no senior political figure in Nigeria is currently serving prison time for corruption.

In November 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Ibrahim Lamorde as the EFCC's chairperson. The move was welcomed by many, including the United States, but the EFCC has not yet made significant strides in the fight against corruption. The commission still lacks adequate institutional independence from the executive. Its chairperson, for example, can be removed at any time at the will of the president.

We encourage you to call on the EFCC chairperson to give a public account of the status and reasons for delays in the corruption cases against senior political figures. We also urge you to press the presidency to improve the independence of the EFCC by sponsoring legislation to amend the EFCC Act to provide greater security of tenure for the commission's chairperson.

Thank you, once again, for your attention to these concerns.

Sincerely,

Daniel Bekele

Executive Director

Africa Division

Why should we expect Mrs. Clinton to address issues that we have not made serious attempts at resolving? For how long should we rely on external forces to solve our self-made problems? It took the British judicial system to make Ibori admit his guilt. Prior to that, he was calling the shots in Nigeria. What did we do? Let's examine the issue of indigene versus non-indigene. This has been with us for a very long time. Politicians have capitalized on this. Students have also capitalized on this. Generations of Nigerians have been brought up to accept this as a way of life. Now we are asking Mrs Clinton to dabble into an issue that probably makes no sense to her.
As regards corruption, what do we expect her to do? What have we done about judges that granted life-long immunity to public office holders? Have we even put up a fight to demand complete autonomy for EFCC?
A Chinese leader once said that the people's war must be fought by the people themselves. This remains true today. The people of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and others did not wait for the Western countries to solve their problems. As long as we enjoy our docility, we should not disturb foreign dignitaries with our problems. Heavens help those who help themselves.

Trust Nigerians to always offload their problem to other people because they cannot do it themselves.

GOD, SAVE US FROM THESE DANIEL BEKELES!!!

WHAT HAS HILLARY CLINTON AND AMERICA GOT TO DO WOTH IT?!!!

HOW ABOUT MEETING HILLARY CLINTON AND/OR BARACK OBAMA WITH STONES WHENEVER ANY ONE OF THEM VISITS NIGERIA!!!

AND IT'S REALLY HIGH TIME WE RELIED ON OURSELVES!!!

@Enyi.

Thanks for that brilliant post of yours above. Basically, you have spoken my mind. But, I still need to add a couple of important points. It's because of people like Daniel Bekele(the surname sounds Ethiopian) that I continue saying that WE, AFRICANS ARE MONKEYS AND THE MOST INFERIOR RACE IN THE WORLD. A majority of us are not only naive as regards to global politics, the true intentions and roles of the so called 'western civilized countries' headed by the United States, but stupidly believe that these countries really wish us well. Suffice to say that it's very unprofessional of this man called to have failed to carry out some basic verification that Nigeria is not even in the list of countries to be visited by Hillary Clinton (who, BTW, is a Jewish American) in the first place. I was just wondering what kind of Mushroom organization Bekele happens to be its Executive Director? This is the first and serious omission on the part of this BABOON ORGANIZATION called Africa Division.

Secondly, if we are even to assume that Hillary Clinton is visiting Nigeria, why must we wait for Hillary, a woman for that matter, to come to Nigeria and tell our president what to do - 52 years after the so called independence(BTW, that African countries are independent is another myth). Do we have some pride left in us at all?!!! You want Nigeria to undergo another international humiliation - imagine the CNN, BBC, NBC and other international stations showing jonathan badluck bowing to QUEEN HILLARY CLINTON and with his hands folded behind his back like an obedient school boy before the headmaster or principal! Nigeria has spent billions of dollars on training, equipping and maintaining(including their salaries) its army and State Security Service, which, BTW, are the MOST CORRUPT, INCOMPETENT, VIUSIONLESS AND MORALLY BANKRUPT GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA, nevertheless, these 'good for nothing armed bandits' are no where to be found when it comes to protecting the lives and properties of Nigeria. Or, am I to understand that you are indirectly asking for the US to set up another military base in Nigeria (as they have alreeady done in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sychelles) and officially finalize the colonization of Africa?

In as much as I am not a supporter of jonathan badluck, nevertheless, it's really very sad that Mr. Bekele does not know that the major cause of the bombings, uprising and political instability in Nigeria today is mainly due to SABOTAGE of jonathan badluck's government by the 'core north', the descendants of usman dan fodio, who are desterate to get power back and can not tolerate him(jonathan), a southerner, in power. It's worth noting too that Nasir El-Rufai, another descendant of Usman Dan Fodio, is among those calling for the resignation of jonathan badluck. This is the second stage of their plot to get back power. They have already ganged up against him and are pressurising him to resign. Resign for who? For Sambo ko? Is it not the same bandits in the PDP that will take over from jonathan badluck? The only and major difference is that the descendants of Usman Dan Fodio will now be in 'full control' of the country and it will be 'business as usual' - like in the 80's during ibrahim babangida, the smiling devil, reign of terror. Thus, it's not surprising that most of jonathan's antagonists calling for his resignation are from his party, the PDP. The Hausa-Funi are desperate and are ready to use any hook and crook methods to get back power. I was just wondering why they did not neither Shehu Shagari nor Musa Yaradua to resign from their posts when it was obvious that they had no clues whatsoever of waht they qwere doing? . Therefore, despite the fact that I consider jonathan badluck to be another incompetent president - like his predecessors, nevertheless, I am completely against his resignation!!! Unfortunately, as things stand today in Nigeria, We have no choice but tolerate jonathan till 2015, then vote him out and replace him with ACN candidate. As far as I am concerned, this is the best and safest option for the country. Any other option is risky and will lead to more crises - and even a civil war.

BACK TO HILLARY CLINTON AGAIN.

Personally, I am against Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton visiting Nigeria simply because I consider the United States, Britain and France in particular as the 3 countries that pose the most serious threat to the sovereignty, political stability, economic development and security and the lives of Nigerians and Africans as a whole. Without any demagogue, the bitter truth is that these 3 countries are behind or the major sources of most of the economic and political problems that Nigeria and Africans are facing today. They should just stay away from Africa! Therefore, I instead of asking Hillary Clinton to put pressure on jonathan, I would rather suggest(just like Mohammed Fawehinmi did too) that whenever Hillary Clinton and/or Barack Obama visits Nigeria, THEY SHOULD BE MET WITH STONES - AND NOT FLOWERS - because they are hypocrites are responsible most of the instability in the world today and are only in Africa to exploit Africans and defend their dirty interests at our expense!!! And how I wished we had less of these Daniel Bekeles in Africa who still naively believe that the Anglo-Saxons are 'good samaritans' who are out to save Africans from complete destrction. It's high time we understood that our saviour lies NOT in the hands of JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH nor Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama(never mind the fact that he is half black and half yellow i.e. neither here nor there) but IN OUR OWN HANDS. AND REMEMBER TOO THAT HEAVEN WILL ONLY HELP THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES!!! IT'S HIGH TIME WE RELIED ON OURSELVES AND NOT ON THE JEWISH HILLARY CLINTONS AND/OR BARACK OBAMA OF AMERICA!!!

WAKE UP FROM YOUR SLUMBER BROTHER(S)!!!

We must not are miss an historical moment that chance has offered us to get rid of the descendants of Usman Don Fodio for good! We must never allow the Hausa-Fulani to ride on our backs to Aso-rock. Our children and generations to come will never forgive us!!!

THERE WAS NEVER ONE NIGERIA!

THERE IS NO ONE NIGERIA NOW!

AND THERE WILL NEVER BE ONE NIGERIA IN THE NEXT 500 YEARS!

IT DIED COMPLETELY AND FINALLY WHEN CHIEF MOSHOOD ABIOLA, THE WINNER OF THE JUNE 12, 1992 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WAS MURDERED IN PRISON BY NORTHERN MILITARY OFFICERS (WITH THE COLLABORATION AND APPROVAL OF THE AMERICAN, BRITISH AND FRENCH GOVERNMENTS)!

AT LEAST 80% OF NIGERIA'S PROBLEMS WERE CAUSED BY THE NORTH AND MILITARY!

THE NORTH HAVE BECOME PERPETUAL PARASITE, LIABILITY, BURDEN AND CLOGS IN THE WHEEL OF PROGRESS TO THE SOUTH!!!

THEREFORE, GETTING RID OF THE PARASITIC NORTH WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESOLVE 80% OF OUR PROBLEMS IN THE SOUTH!!!

TIME HAS PROVED THAT A HAUSA-FULANI MAN CAN NEVER DEFEND THE INTERESTS(RIGHTS, PROPERTIES AND LIVES) OF NDIGBO NEITHER INSIDE NOR OUTSIDE NIGERIA! LET US STOP DECEIVING OURSELVES!

ALL ONE NIGERIA HAS GIVEN THE SOUTH SO FAR IS TRAGEDY, PAIN, TEARS AND SORROW!!!

LET US SAVE OUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND GENERATIONS TO COME FROM THE NIGHMARE CALLED ONE NIGERIA BY ENDING THE FORCED RELATION IMPOSED ON US BY THE BRITISH FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC INTERESTS!!!

IF WE FAIL TO DO SO NOW, THEY WILL NEVER FORGIVE US!!!

WE ALL NEED OUR OWN PRESIDENTS, MINISTERS, AMBASSADORS, EMBASSIES, POLICE AND ARMY TO DEFEND OUR RIGHTS, PROPERTIES, LIVES AND INTERESTS - NIGERIA IS NOT CAPABLE OF DOING THAT FOR 52 YEARS!!!

LET US SAVE NIGERIANS AND NOT NIGERIA FROM COMPLETE DESTRUCTION BY INCOMPETENT, CORRUPT, VISIONLESS AND MORALLY BANKRUPT OPPORTUNISTS LIKE JONATHAN BADLUCK AND HIS COLLEAGUES BY BREAKING UP NIGERIA NOW!!!

TOMORROW MAY BE TOO LATE!!!

IF YOU LOVE YOUR CHILDREN, RELATIVES, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, DON'T EVER ALLOW THEM TO GO TO THE NORTH 'UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES' TO SERVE THE USELESS NYSC!! THEIR LIVES ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT!!! NIGERIA, A FAILED STATE, BIGGEST BANANA REPUBLIC IN THE WORLD, A VERY SICK AND DOOMED COUNTRY, IS NOT WORTH DYING FOR!!!

WE EXPECT ALL THE GOVERNORS AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF SOUTHERN STATES TO PASS A LAW THAT WILL PROHIBIT/BAN THEIR INDEGINES FROM GOING TO THE NORTH TO SERVE AS CORPERS IRRESPECTIVE OF WHATEVER GUARANTEE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND NORTHERN GOVERNORS MIGHT MAKE!!! DON'T EVER TRUST THESE PEOPLE OR ENTRUST YOUR LIVES TO THEM!!! THEY ARE NOT RELIABLE!!!

JONATHAN BADLUCK, STELLA ODUA, ALLISON MADUEKE HAVE MURDERED THEM AND KILLED THEIR DREAMS!!!! WHAT A
PITY!!!
