OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF THE ALUKO FAMILY
ON THE PASSING AWAY OF PROFESSOR SAMUEL ADEPOJU ALUKO
With a deep sense of loss, yet with great gratitude to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for a full and Christian life well-lived, we announce the death of our exemplary husband, father and grandfather, foremost academician and consummate patriot Professor Samuel Adepoju Aluko, at 12.30 am (UK time) on Tuesday February 7, 2012, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He died peacefully and painlessly with prayer and songs [“Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father”, etc.] after a brief illness. At or very close to his bedside were his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Joyce Anomoghan, some of his six children, twenty-four grandchildren and other family members.
Born at Ode-Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government, Ekiti State on August 18, 1929, he attended primary school at St. Mary’s School Ode-Ekiti and Emmanuel School Ado-Ekiti, secondary school at Christ’s School Ado-Ekiti, and university at the London School of Economics. He taught and had top administrative duties at various educational institutions, particularly the University of Ife, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with sabbatical stints at the universities in Birmingham, Harvard and MIT, among others. His service as adviser and social critic in public policy, politics and economics to various local, state and federal governments in Nigeria and abroad are well-documented, a passion for which he demonstrated right to the very end of his life. He loved sports, travel and his family dearly.
The outpouring of a sense of great loss, yet of love and admiration¸that our family has witnessed in print and by personal contact, from the top of Nigerian society to the ordinary citizens for who “Papa Sam Aluko” had a passion, has been overwhelming. We thank everybody who has got in touch with us or has tried to. No greater joy do we have – or would he have had – to be so re-assured that he impacted not just our family but the lives of thousands, even millions of other people in Ekitiland, Nigeria and the rest of the world. Even in transition to the glorious arms of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we hope and trust that fond memories of his illustrious life will continue to inspire people.
Our now late Patriarch was known to have lived a simple life, and his burial will be kept so and dignified. Within days of the arrival of his body from abroad, he will be interned at Ode-Ekiti, further details of which will be released in the coming days. In the meantime, we urge you to pray for us all as we plan these details; that as we mourn with dignity as Christians with hope, God in His mercy will grant all of us strength, and journeying mercies to all who from far and near will travel to physically witness our Patriarch’s final celebration here on Earth. He will be watching from Heaven, praise God!
Signed: Professor Mobolaji E. Aluko

Comments Page: 1 2 OMG! He must have suffered from the revelations in the oil sector, knowing fully well that Jona is still not getting it right in spite of all he did to assist him. That coupled with the death of his bosom friend and confidant, Emeka Ojukwu is more than enough to hasten his demise. May he rest assured that the words of wisdom he left behind are still treasured by the younger ones. And his dream for Nigeria will be fulfilled one of this days as long as the country remains on the map. MJ,
You know, when I saw the caption of this thread, your point was the first thing that came to my mind. Anyone with a weak heart must not watch the House of Reps probe on fuel subsidy. Its scandalous, degrading, heart-wrenching and totally demoralising. By God s grace, all those who had a hand in the general suffering in the land would pay dearly for their greed and wickedness. May Papa Sam Aluko rest in perfect peace. Professor Aluko is NOT dead, he lives in Professor Bolaji Aluko...unlike many hopeless Nija politicians who are always on the march while their kids would never amount to anything in life. Ewoooooooooooo. even before his friend Odimegwu Ojukwu is buried.
Chai May God console the grieving family Ndo nu May his memories live on. I pray my own father lives up to a ripe old age of 83 in good health (and beyond if it's God's will) in Jesus' name Amen. What an irony. Jonathan is quoted by his mouthpiece, Abati PhD as mourning M.T. Mbu while no word is said of Prof Aluko and here we are grieving for the loss of the great prof It shows that the leaders and the led are not on the same page. QUOTE:
How do you know they have been informed officially? biko make una leave Jona alone jor QUOTE:
Officially? As if anybody cares about their crocodile tears. Let Reuben Abati PhD wait to be informed officially that Prof Aluko Sam is dead. He has a very long time to wait. QUOTE:
Don't you know that families determine when they tell the public about the loss of a loved one some people wait as long as a week or two to make official announcements people ought to respect that Is this news in the papers yet? If not, I hope Tonsoyo had the permission of the family to announce this here since he didn't put any link to the story,it can be embarrassing. checked the papers yes it is on several Newspapers How are the mighty fallen indeed. Some fall to ignominy; a few depart in peace and with the heartfelt blessings of the people. Pa Aluko may not have always conformed to popular opinion; but he was undeniably one of the greatest minds that has irradiated the Yoruba and Nigerian academic and political firmament of his generation. Adieu Papa. May your seed be mighty on the earth. Amen A GENIUS AND GEM IS GONE!!! ERIN WO! ANOTHER YORUBA GENIUS AND GIANT WASTED BY THE GOVERNMENT AND ONE NIGERIA!!! HOW LONG WILL THIS CONTINUE!!! YORUBA RONU!!! Iku m'eni re lo. Iku o ba gb'owo,a ba fun lowo ko le ba fi Baba Aluko s'ile. Sugbon, iku fariga, o ko owo. Although, earlier commentators noted that Baba Aluko lived a fulfilled life. In general, they might be right. But,it all depend on from which angle we are doing the analysis.Personally, I beg to disagree simply because Prof. Aluko was denied the opportunity by the military, corrupt politicians, descendants of Usman Dan Fodio and the fraudulent political system to turn Nigeria's economy and even that of Africa as a whole around for good! Prof.Sam Aluko died at a time when most Nigerians live in abject poverty and less than 2 dollars a day! He died at a time when Nigeria is STILL A FAILED STATE,THE BIGGEST BANANA REPUBLIC IN THE WORLD, A VERY SICK AND DOOMED COUNTRY WITH LITTLE OR NO HOPE! He died at a time when Nigeria is saddled with debt. He died at a time when there is NO SINGLE federal government company functioning well. Aluko died at a time when Nigeria spends billions of dollars on food. Aluko died at a time when more than 95% of Nigerians and Nigeria's territory can not boast of regular power supply.Hedied at a time when Nigeria can not boast of any infrastructure. He died at a time when the government give out our arableand fertile land to foreigners to farm and export the products out without paying anything in tax. Aluko died at a time when THE WHOLE OF NIGERIA'S ECONOMY has been handed over to foreigners and foreign companies all in the name of foreign investment. Aluko died at a time when Nigerian rulers, governors, senators and other politicians spend millionsof dollars abroad on medical treatment. Aluko died at a time when Indian companies, and not Nigerian, are the biggest employers of Nigerians. Sam Aluko died at a time when multinationals are using off-shore taxation to rob Nigerians and the federal government of billions of dollarsin taxes.Aluko died at a time when the NNPC was declared bankrupt and has no clues at all as regards to the amount of oil that are liftedandsold.Aluko died at a time when millions of Nigerian students STILL study under the trees and in dilapidated buildings. Aluko died at a time when an average Nigerian pupil has to take JAMB 3 times in orderto get admission into the University because there are not enough universities. Aluko died at a time when Nigeria has become A DUMPING GROUND for all hazardous and low quality Chineseand Indian products. aluko died at a time when we still use English, the language of our colonial masters,as the only official language in communication.Alukodied at a time when the multinationals pollute the Niger Delta at will without any repercussion. Aluko died at a time when Nigerian companies are no more capable of doing anything and have to rely on the Lebanese, Chinese,Indians and other foreigners to do everything for them; construction of roads, houses,e.t.c. Aluko died at a time when Nigeria is STILL A MEMBER OF A USELESS AND MEANINGLESS ORGANIZATION CALLED THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH, AN ARTIFICIAL CLUB SET UP BY THE BRITISH TO DEFEN THEIR DIRTY INTERESTS IN NIGERIA/AFRICA ANDCONTINUE TO EXPLOIT US THROUGH 'NEO-COLONIALISM.' Aluko died at a time when Babatunde Fashola, the governor of Lagos state asked Lagos students to start studying Chinese instead of Yoruba. Aluko died at a time when Babatunde Raji Fashola publickly told Omole Sowore, the founder of saharareporters, that 'THE PROCESS'HE USES IN DOING HIS JOB DONE IS NOT IMPORTANT AND HE WENT SCOTT FREE WITH THIS BLUNDER. ALUKO DIED AT A TIME WHEN NIGERIA DOES NOT HAVE A WELL DEFINED FOREIGN POLICY AND OUR LEADERS BLINDLY CARRY OUT THE ORDERS OF THE USA, BRITAIN ANDFRANCE AND VOTE AT THE U.N. AS THEY ARE TOLD WITHOUT THINKING DEEPLY ABOUT THE REPERCUSSION.ALUKO DIED AT A TIME WHEN THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT HAVE A WELL DEFINED ECONOMIC PLAN,DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY AND RELIES ONLY ON OIL AND FOREIGNERS. Aluko died at a time when Nigerian president commands no respect and has become a LAUGHING STOCK among all Nigerians allover the world.Aluko died at a time when jonathan badluck had to admit to Robin Sanders,an afro-american woman and fmr. U.S.ambassador to Nigeria, A SENIOR CIA AGENT, that he had no clues whatsoever how to run Nigeria. Aluko died at a time when Southerners were OPENLY BEING SLAUGHTERED IN THE NORTH by the descendants of Usman Dan Fodio for years more than and the government is POWERLESS and could do nothing toprotect these poor souls. Aluko diedat a timewhen being a Nigeria is A BIG CURSE AND STIGMA to be a Nigerian. Aluko died at a time when our president STILL has to run to the CIA,the scotland yard, the British, Americans,French, Indians, Chinese,Lebanese(population: 1.5 million) for help for EVERYTHING. Aluko died at a time when thousands of Nigerians meet their UNTIMELY DEATH on our dilapidated roads. Aluko died at a time when Nigeria has the highest number of unemployment rate in the world. Aluko died at a time when hundreds of Nigerians sleep outside foreign embassies and areready to do anything in order to get visas and CHECK OUT OF THE COUNTRY FOR GOOD. Aluko died when an average Nigerian wouldrather die or COMMIT SUICIDE rather than face deportation to Nigeria. Aluko died at a time when Nigeria is among the most corrupt country in the world. aluko died at a time when Nigeria is among the POOREST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD despite the abundance of mineral and human resourcesit is bestowed. WEARE UNABLE TO MAKE THE BEST USE OF THEM.THEY HAVE ALL VIRTUALLY BEING HIJACKED OR HANDED OVER TO FOREIGNERS AND FOREIGN COMNPANIES! In a nutshell,ALUKO DIED WHEN NIGERIA IS A CONFIRMED FAILED STATE, BIGGEST BANANA REPUBLIC IN THE WORLD, A DOOMED AND VERY SICK COUNTRY! Taking into consideration the above statements, HOW DEAR WE SAY THAT PROF.SAM ALUKO WAS A FULFILLED MAN. WE SHOULD STOP DECEIVING OURSELVES. THE BITTER TRUTH IS THAT NIGERIA WASTED THIS GENIUS!!! Imagine if Aluko was in charge of our economy from independence instead of all these half-backed opportunists that call themselves economists. The bitter truth is that we only benefitted very little from this genius. It is sad to admit that corrupt, incompetent, visionless and morally bankrupt Nigerian rulers - including badluck jonathan - are not interested in using the brains of professorAluko to develop Nigeria's economy, but are only interested in looting the treasury. HOW MANY ILLUSTRIOUS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF OODUA HAVE TO BE WASTED BY NIGERIA BEFORE WE SAY "IBI A BA DE YI TI TO GEE. SEWON BI SORIN M'EJA NII? ORISA BI O LE GBE MI O SE MI B'OSE BA MI"(ENOUGH IS ENOUGH)!!! Therefore, personally,I hold the belief that ALUKO WAS A GENIUS WHO WAS WASTED BY NIGERIA -ESPECIALLY THE DESCENDANTS OF OTHMAN DAN FODIO! He was not fulfilled. He was denied the opportunity to imnpliment his economic programmes to uplift Nigeria's economy and make it among the best 10 in the world! Prof.Aluko was a victim of THE NIGERIAN FACTOR!We need to admit this fact whether welike it or not. Had it been that we had our OODUA REPUBLIC, the Yoruba would had benefitted tremendously from Aluko's knowledge. As I wrote in one of my articles "OODUA REPUBLIC - TO BE OR NOT TO BE?"(available on this site), we,the Yoruba, have more than enough resources to build a strong, prosperous, peaceful nation that will as well be the envy of the whole world. And our most valuable and at the same time invaluable resources are our people -our intellectual resources. We must not squander them any more in building any fake,non-existing One Nigeria! WE MUST CONCENTRATE OUR RESOURCES 'SOLELY' ON OUR OWN DEVELOPMENT! ONE NIGERIA IS COSTING THE YORUBA A LOT! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Our people: youth corpers, traders, specialists are murdered on regular bases in the North by the descendants of Usman Dan Fodio. MOSHOOD ABIOLA - THE WINNER OF THE 1992 PRESIDENTIALELECTIONS - WAS MURDERED TOO IN PRISON BY THESE PEOPLE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE AMERICANS AND THE BRITISH. HOWLONG SHALL WE CONTINUE TO WASTE OR SACRIFICE OUR PEOPLE TO THE NORTH IN THE NAME OF BUILDING A FAKE ONE NIGERIA - THAT NEVER EXISTED,DOES NOT EXIST NOW AND WILL NEVER EXIST IN THE NEXT 500 YEARS?!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Like Pa Ogunde admonished us 'YORUBA RONU!!!! ONE NIGERIA IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE TO MAKING THE BEST USE OF OUR PEOPLE AND BUILDING A GREAT YORUBA NATION! PLEASE BELIEVE ME! I implore any Yoruba man reading this comment to please go and read my article and ponder over it. It is STILL more than relevant today, most especially after the death of Pa Sam Aluko - a great economist and genius whom Nigeria did not appreciate and could not make the BEST USE of his brains. Finally, I want to use this media to extend my condolence to Prof.Bolaji Aluko and the entire Aluko family. You have a cause to be proud of your father in all respects. He was A GREAT AND AMBITIOUS MAN who wanted to use his brains to serve the entire black race. Ojo a j'ina sira won o. Pa Sam Aluko,ma je iyepe,ma je ekolo, ohun ti won ban je ni ki e ba won je o. E SUN RE O!!! THANK YOU. P.S. Prof.Aluko,I have wanted to ask or discuss with you for long, but for one reason or the other, I could not. It's very unfortunate that I will now have to discuss it after the death of your father. I happened to study with one Aluko at the University of Ife before I travelled out of Nigeria. Infact, we were quiet close. We lived in the same hall. It was later that I heard or was told that he was Prof. Sam Aluko's son, but I never for once asked him if it was true or not. I will appreciate the opportunity to locate and maintain contact with him.Thank you. You can ask for details or send a reply through PM.Thank you. Hi, folks! Within the past couple of months, several high-profile Nigerians, (like Tayo Aderinokun, His Excellency, General (Dim) Chukwuemeka Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu (Eze Nd-Igbo Gburugburu), General Ibrahim Ogbanje Gbadamosi Babangida (GCFR), Chief Mathew Mbu, Alhaji Abdulkadir Sanusi Dantata (CFR), Professor Sam Aluko), have had cause to travel overseas, either for \"medical check-up\" or treatment, only to return home either DEAD, or worse than before. Why? Of course, it is because \"our hospitals are mere consulting clinics\", with over-flowing mortuaries! Only yesterday, one of the resident armchair philosophers at my favourite igbo-smoking and ogogoro-guzzling joint at Marine Base waterside in Port Harcourt (Garden City), injected a rather cynical but very pertinent paradox into my tiny brain, when he wondered aloud if indeed such prominent (and RICH) Nigerians, who go to the UK, the EU, the US of A, South Africa, and India for their health-care needs, are not being made to \"rest in peace\" DELIBERATELY by the secret services of those countries, so that their Nigerian \"very important patients\" will lose their investments (loots) stashed overseas. Is it not yet time for Nigerians to stop stockpiling their (looted or hard-earned) investments overseas, and start enjoying the benefits of world-class health care services in Nigeria, in their enlightened self-interest? Na wa for dis awa 9jeriya, no be small! Muchas gracias. Don Juan-Carlos ABRAXAS (III) Prof Aluko Passes On From: This Day Published on: Wednesday, February 08, 2012 By Omololu Ogunmade and Ibrahim Shuaibu After battling an undisclosed ailment in a London hospital in the United Kingdom for several days, renowned economist, Professor Sam Aluko, finally gave up the ghost in the early hours of Tuesday. He was 83 years old. An indigene of Ode Ekiti in the present day Ekiti State, he was an erudite scholar, politician and a staunch member of the think-tank of the first Premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. A politician of impeccable character, he was a prominent leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the defunct Second Republic. Aluko, who was a vociferous social critic, emerged as the Chairman of the National Economic Intelligence Committee during the military regime of late General Sani Abacha and served in the committee till 2000. The committee was charged with the responsibility of monitoring the capital budgets of the government. Aluko was one of Nigeria's most prominent and finest economists who had his own fair share of public exposure. His economic philosophy was patterned after that of John Maynard Keynes. He became the first Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). In 1981, he was appointed into a committee constituted to produce a framework for the Bendel State University, now Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He began his teaching career in 1946 and rose through the ranks to become the principal of College of Commerce, Sapele and later vice-principal of Lagos City College. During the period, he served on various local organisations including membership of the Ode Ekiti Progressive Union and the Ekiti People's Party in 1953. He carved a niche for himself in the public sphere through his critical stance on several government policies. He also served as an adviser to a number of governments in the country. Born on August 18, 1929, Aluko had his elementary education at St Mary’s Primary School, Ode-Ekiti between 1936 and 1940. He proceeded to Emmanuel School, Ado Ekiti in 1941 before moving to Christ School, Ado-Ekiti from 1941-1945 and later Yaba Technical Institute in Lagos between 1948 and 1949. Between 1955 and 1959, Aluko studied at the London School of Economics, England. Between 1959 and 1966, Aluko was a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Ife and University of Nigeria, Nsukka respectively. In 1962, he was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts as well as Harvard University both in the United States. He was appointed a Professor of Economics at the University of Ife in 1967, where he served until 1980. After leaving the University, Aluko picked up a political appointment as Economic Adviser to Governor Adekunle Ajasin of the old Ondo State between 1980 and 1983. Prior to his emergence as adviser to Ajasin, he had been a member of the National Executive Council of UPN. His political career dated back to 1962, when he joined the defunct Action Group (AG) before the First Republic was abolished through a military coup d’etat. He wrote three books and co-authored 12 others. Aluko was married to Joyce Ofuya and the union was blessed with six children, among who is Mobolaji Aluko, a professor of civil engineering who until his recent appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, was a lecturer in a U.S. university. Commiserating with the Alukos over the demise of their patriarch, President Goodluck Jonathan said the death of the professor was a national loss. Jonathan in a statement by his Special Adviser, (condolences and Obituary matters) Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that though the death was a painful one, his family, friends and associates should take solace in the fact that he lived a fulfilled life while his legacies speak eloquently for him. “As they mourn the late Prof. Aluko, President Jonathan urges his family, friends, associates and admirers to be comforted by the knowledge that the renowned economist lived a life full of many indelible achievements and notable contributions to national development,” he said. Similarly, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi on his part, assured his Ondo State counterpart that his state stands ready to partner the family in giving a befitting burial to “this illustrious son of the Land of Honour.” Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), yesterday, in his condolence, said, “Indeed the shoes left behind by Aluko will be hard to fill,” while praying to almighty God to grant Aluko’s soul sweet repose for the great service he rendered to his fatherland. QUOTE:
GBOGBO WON SUN, WON K'ORI SIBI KAN NAA! You are doubly right on this! All these people, including Yaradua, spent billion of dollars in order for their foreign doctors to put them to death and share their money that they have looted from the treasuries. As I wrote in one of my series, these people are so stupid to the extent that it never occured to any of them to build a modern hospital in Nigeria. It's really very shameful and embarrassing. That's why I say over and over that Nigeria IS A FAILED STATE, BIGGEST BANANA REPUBLIC IN WORLD, A VERY SICK AND DOOMED COUNTRY RULED BY CORRUPT, VISIONLESS, INCOMPETENT AND MORALLY BANKRUPT OPPORTUNISTS LIKE jONATHAN KELEBE bADLUCK FOR 51 ! WHAT A PITY!!! THANK YOU. I recalled a lecturer who claimed to be Prof Aluko's former student at UNN described the Prof as an Igbo man with a Yoruba name and the lecturer's friend countered that even the name "Aluko" sounded more like Igbo than Yoruba.
We lost a detribalised Nigerian. May his soul rest in peace. @Abraxas,
The reason these people came back from foreign hospitals dead or worse of is not because local hospitals are mortuaries, any hospital in the world should not depend on the conditions of others to provide decent service especially when the individuals are paying for the best private services. One thing moronic Africans have not yet got wind of is the number of African politicians who have vast sums of money stashed in foreign bank and die mysteriously in foreign hospitals without their families and countries ever knowing where these monies are and how to get access to them. A Turkish banker had let slip at a party once, telling me of an Interpol cable that named some Indians and Lebanese people who collude with medical doctors and western financial institutions to exterminate (in mysterious circumstances) mostly rich Africans (who have hidden wealth in western banks). I asked him for more info and he said no comment but the western world is aware while Africans are not and since the west profits from it they have no plans to stop it until Africans get know and expose it. Majke una use una head sometimes. Comments Page: 1 2 |
