Senator: We’re no longer save in Sokoto…5,000 Nigerians have fled to Niger Republic/ Ibrahim Gobir

The All Progressives Congress (APC) member representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Gobir, has decried the worsening insecurity in the state and the helplessness of the Nigerian security agencies to secure the people.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Senator presenting Niger North at the upper legislative chamber, Sabi Abdullahi, had moved a motion for seeking improvement in security operations in Niger State.

Seconding Abdullahi’s motion, Gobir pointed out the security situation in Sokoto East currently has degenerated into a pathetic situation where many residents of the area now depend on soldiers from Niger Republic to save them from bandits.

According to him, about 5,000 Nigerians have so far migrated from the area to Niger Republic in search of safety.

He said: “The situation in Sokoto East as far as armed banditry is concerned is pathetic and tragic because it is only the Nigerien Army that has been coming to their rescue while the Nigerian Army looks the other way round.

“Based on very reliable and verifiable information from the area, many a time, the people of the affected areas called on Nigerian army for help and protection against the bandits but no response.

“The Nigerien army has been assisting in wading off the bandits, the very reason why not less than 5,000 people in the affected areas have migrated to Niger Republic for safety.”

He added that at least 300 people in the area have either been killed or kidnapped in the last three months while cows worth billions have been stolen.

The lawmaker continued: “There is no protection for my people in the Sokoto East Senatorial District because of the incessant attacks of the bandits.

“At least 300 people have either been killed or kidnapped in the last three months while over 5,780 cows valued at N2.5bn had been stolen.

“We are even appealing to the Federal Government through the Senate for reparation. We now rely on the Nigerien Army that is helping us since our Nigerian soldiers have abandoned us.

“At the moment, the Nigerians in Sokoto East are relocating to Niger Republic because they are no longer save in Nigeria.”
