The Senate has passed a bill seeking to prohibit sexual harassment in tertiary institutions across the nation.

The development comes amid recent surge in cases of rape across the country.

The bill titled, “A Bill for an Act to prevent, prohibit and redress sexual harassment of students in tertiary educational institutions and for matters concerned therewith, 2019," was passed during Tuesday's plenary after it scale third reading.

Its passage was consequent upon consideration of a report submitted by the upper chamber's committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters.

The bill, which was sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, contains 25 clauses, and  seeks to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary institutions.

If assented by President Muhammadu Buhari, offenders would spend 14 years in jail.
