Malami promises compliance with court order on recovery of ex-governors' pension/ Malami

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has assured Nigerians of his readiness to comply with a recent order of the Federal High Court mandating immediate recovery of pensions paid to erstwhile governors serving or have served as senators and ministers.

Recall that the Court had on Wednesday gave the order following a petition filed by the Social-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

In the suit, SERAP had prayed the court to direct Malami to challenge pension laws in various states of the federation which provides for payment of pensions to past governors and other public officials.

The suit had specifically targeted former governors who are serving or had served as senators and ministers but still collecting pensions.

Speaking in a statement issued through his spokesman, Umar Gwandu, Malami stated he would comply with the court order in public interest.

He said: “We will work and be guided by the legalities of the case, the dictates of justice and public interest in complying with the judgment.”
