Default Super Eagles defeat Madagascar 2-0 in ANC2012 Qualifier

90 + 3’ – Game over! Nigeria win 2-0, but Guinea top Group B after they thrash Ethiopia 4-1 away from home. Guinea host the Eagles next month. It will be a match to watch.

90’ – The Barea finish with a flourish as they record another corner, while the game is held up for a few minutes to attend to injured Kalu Uche.

89’ – The Barea of Madagascar have nothing to be ashamed of by this defeat, they have given a good account of themselves.

89’ – Momadany fails to connect a cross from the left by Liliana.

89’ – There will be three minutes of addituonal time.

88’ – Musa comes close to getting a third for Eagles but his final effort flashes across the Madagascar goal.

87’ – It seems the game will end 2-0 in Nigeria's favour as the minutes tick away.

    – It's not the big win the fans were hoping for, though.

85’ – Enyeama makes his first save of the game when he tips a shot for a corner.

85’ – The shot is goal-bound. Ahmed Musa is showing his blistering pace!

83’ – Mikel seems to have suffered a knock and so he is replaced.

    – The fans have begun making their way out of the stadium with six minutes left on the clock.

82’ – To the credit of the Barea of Madagascar they are not giving up as they keep attacking.

82’ – Musa was goal king of the NPL with 18 goals. It's his full international debut.

81’ – To the credit of the Barea of Madagascar they have not giving up as they keep attacking.

80’ – Okoro's mistake around the eagles box is cleared by Yobo.

77’ – Madagsacar's Ibrahim Samuel's shot is too weak to trouble Enyeama.

76’ – Uche free kick forces goalkeeper masina to punch for a corner.

76’ – Martins is denied from point-blank range by a great save by goalkeeper Masina.

76’ – Martins controlled the ball and turned inside the six-yard box only for masina to scramble the ball to safety.

74’ – Madagascar Substituition: Madagascar bring on Momadaly a striker.

72’ – Madagascar foiled again as Yobo shields the ball for Enyeama to collect the ball easily.

71’ – Nigeria have about 70% of the possession.

70’ – Okoro is already making his presence felt as he forces a corner.

69’ – Okoro was the stand-out star for Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup last year in Nigeria.

68’ – Nigeria Substitution: Stanley Okoro replaces Eneramo.

67’ – Nigeria are playing the ball around more as they look for gaps in the defence of the other team.

65’ – A mistake around the Nigeria box gives Madagascar a sniff at goal, but in the end it's nothing to worry about for the Eagles fans.

64’ – The game has opened up a lot more now as both teams have more space within which to really express themselves.

63’ – Otekpa's shot from distance is wayward and easily rolls out for a goal kick to the Barea.

61’ – It's not a good call because the goalkeeper bumped into his own defender.

61’ – Nigeria survive a scare after sub Otekpa makes a mistake deep into the Nigeria area.

61’ – Madagascar Substitution: Carolus replaces Zozimar for Madagascar

60’ – Martins nods home a free kick by Uche, but the ref disallows the goal for a foul on the goalkeeper.

54’ – Nigeria Substitution: Eneji Otekpa replaces Femi Ajilore.

52’ – Enyimba defender Valentine Nwabili is holding his own in this star-studded Eagles team, but Madagascar will not surrender easily.

49’ – Laliana takes on the Nigeria defence but Yobo stops him before he fires home from inside the box.

46’ – Madagascar kick off the second half.

45 + 4’ – It's the end of the first half. The Tunisian ref blows his whistle. Fans are dreaming of more goals from the Eagles after the interval.

    – The second half is about to start soon, Nigeria back on the pitch.

45 + 2’ – Great work by Martins again! The Rubin Kazan striker really wants to play.

45 + 2’ – The crowd are now a lot more excited and begin to do the Mexican wave in celebration.

45 + 1’ – GOAL! Martins darts into the box from the left and Eneramo finally gets his goal with a simple tap-in. Nigeria lead 2-0.

45’ – Defensive header by Yobo... There will be four minutes of additional time.

44’ – The long balls by Nigeria are easily read and cleared by the Barea.

43’ – Martins is stopped in the nick of time as he steadies to fire home from inside the Madagascar box.

42’ – Scrappy play by both teams as game approaches the half time mark.

39’ – Nigeria pile on the pressure in search of a second goal.

38’ – Still 1-0 in favour of Nigeria as the visitors continue to defend resolutely.

36’ – Madagascar look comfortable on the ball, but it is Uche who blasted at goal from outside the box for goalkeeper Masina to save easily.

34’ – Eneramo again runs clear of the Barea back line but he fails to get a hold on his shot. The Esperance striker looks good for a goal.

    – The game is still wide open as Madagascar are here to play football, they are not intimidated by Nigeria's track record.

31’ – Eagles clear their lines back in defence as the Barea attack again.

29’ – Madagascar can look after themselves physically as the likes of Osaze, Martins and even Eneramo find out quite quickly...

28’ – Tempo of the game has slowed down since a frantic opening by hosts Nigeria.

26’ – The lively Laliana puts in a cross inside the Nigeria box, but there is no player to make the necessary connection.

25’ – Long ball by Yobo locates Uche, whose chip from outside of the foot is again punched away by the Madagascar goalkeeper.

23’ – Martins forces a corner kick, the first of the game after he was again put through by Uche.

21’ – Free kick for Eagles from a scorable distance, taken by Uche but the goalie punches the eventual kick to safety.

20’ – It was a clinical finish by Martins, who dashes into the box before firing home with his weaker right foot.

19’ – GOAL! Obafemi Martins opens the scoring. Nigeria lead 1-0.

18’ – Eneramo's shot from well outside the box goes wide.

16’ – Mikel is spraying his long balls to launch the Nigeria attack, but the away team seem to be reading those balls very well.

14’ – This will not be a picnic for the Eagles. Madagascar are holding their own even on a bumpy UJ Esuene Stadium pitch.

13’ – Martins sets up Kalu Uche inside the 18-yard box but Madagascar clear their lines.

6’ – Eagles playing the ball around well as Madagascar try to contain them and sit back in their own half of the pitch.

    4’ – Game restarts after a three-minute delay.

    1’ – Nigeria take kick-off.

1’ – Still within the minute mark, Eneramo goes clear for Nigeria, but he fails to make hay after he collided with the goalkeeper. It's a cracking start!

    – Game held up for a couple of minutes to attend to the injured Madagascar goalie.

    – The team captains shake hands and we're ready for kick off.

    – The Barea of Madagascar are kitted in all-red. It's a packed stadium, which has a capacity of about 15,000.

    – Nigeria line-up: Vincent Enyeama – Chidi Odiah, Valentine Nwabili, Joseph Yobo, Danny ****tu – Oluwafemi Ajilore, Mikel, Osaze Odemwingie, Kalu Uche – Michael Eneramo, Obafemi Martins.

    – The teams are on the touchline for the national anthems now.

    – Nigeria are playing in all-green strips and will be led by Joseph Yobo.

    – Today’s referee is Jedidi Slim from Tunisia.

    – Match venue, UJ Esuene Stadium has staged matches of the 1999 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and last year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

    – It once boasted a top team, Calabar Rovers, but these days they are languishing in the obscurity of the lower league.

    – The southern coastal town of Calabar, widely regarded as the cleanest in Nigeria, has been bubbling since it was announced last weekend it will host this full international fixture.

    @No Smoking

Me too, but I think it is a good idea to spread the Super Eagles matches around the country.

They refurbished their stadium during the U17 Nigeria hosted to meet FIFA standard. They have kept the Stadium intact since then unlike what happens in other parts of Nigeria, including Abuja, where the Stadiums are vandalized after the competition.

Definitely a good idea to move the international matches around the country, to enable more citizens see their beloved Eagles play locally.

The Abuja matter may be mafia-driven. I remember reading how the new stadium collapsed after hosting the Commonwealth event...

Oga no smoking, just to update you, calabar hosted an Eagles match in the '80c. I think it was either 1980 0r 1981. It was the second leg of the olympic qualifier against Algeria. In that match Nigeria won by two goals. The first leg i think ended in 2 goal to 1 for the Algerians, and Nigeria needed to win the match without concedeing a goal. In the dying minutes Bright Omakaro fouled an algerian player, i think it was Lahkdar Belloumi (or some other player) and got red carded, while the Algerians lost the player to injury and couldn't field a substitute 'cos they had used all their substitutes. Hence Omakaro coined the nickname '10 - 10'. One of the altime great matched Eagles ever played as far as i am concerned.

It appears the boys played very well and kept the pressure up during the whole game. if only NFF can nwo get some sense...Anyhow, I was very glad to read the following:

70’ – Okoro is already making his presence felt as he forces a corner.

69’ – Okoro was the stand-out star for Nigeria at the U-17 World Cup last year in Nigeria.

68’ – Nigeria Substitution: Stanley Okoro replaces Eneramo.
Yup that is what we need, give the younger boys a good chance. Well done Eguavon!

Abuja have never hosted Commonwealth games. It was only the Cycling Velodrome that was damaged by a thunderstorm in 2003 during the All Africa Games.

That Olympic qualifier was in 1988 @ Enugu & the away result was 0-1 (not 1-2) against Nigeria. Omokaro got "10-10" nickname during CAN 1988 semi-final match.

@Godwin, You are ABSOLUTELY WRONG.The details are exactly as i put them, and Omakaro's moniker derived from his match against Algeria in an Olympic Qualifier in a return match held in Calabar. At the time Omakaro was playing for Abiola Babes . The quartet of Yisa Sofoluwe, Bright Omakaro, Eboigbe and Ademola Adesina held the forth at the back in that match. If their are any mistakes in my points it will only be very minute ones. The match was played soon after the 1980 African nations cup held in Nigeria (so the olimpic qualifier would have been played between 1980 and 1982).

Really .... Did you actually read the match reports posted?

I'm tempted to post the All time results Algeria vs Nigeria but it seems you don't read, and it will probably be a waste of time.

Former Green Eagles defender, Bright Omokaro

    My friends ruined my business

He was considered by many as the toughest defender of his time; a time when the former Green Eagles player, Bright Omokaro, ruled the turf as a nightmare to all strikers. As a school boy, the 45-year-old former Bendel Insurance of Benin strongman was a hero as he sometimes came to the rescue of his school football team. Now a coach with Delta Force, Omokaro said his current job was not the preferred choice when he left football.

”I retired from active football at the end of my contract with the Shooting Stars around 1996. I had a brilliant career in football and was always fit despite my style of play, which was very hard. My decision to leave football was not accepted by many people, especially my friends who were still playing at the time. They thought I had rushed into retirement and some even said that I would soon come out of it.

”It was such a cold reaction but I was determined to quit. Nobody knew how I felt inside me and probably that was why they mocked at my decision. Within me, I felt that I was pushing my body too hard, I felt that as an adult, I must be able to know when to say goodbye.

”I felt it was time to go even though it was hard leaving behind the trade I learnt so early in life. But there is a saying in the game which says, if you don‘t leave football at the right age, football will leave you at the wrong time.”

While such an understanding and grip over self-control are not common with celebrities, Omokaro, who was a member of Nigeria‘s 1988 football team to the Seoul Olympics in 1988, did not look back. But what was he relying on? He left the game at a time when footballers started earning fortunes for wearing jerseys. According to him, he had an ace up his sleeve at the time; a pool of wealth he had built over a long time, but one that almost dried up.

”There is money in football all the time. We were not earning so much at the time, but the money had great value. If you spent it wisely, there would be enough to rely on when you retire. Today‘s footballers earn so much, but that is because the figure is high and perhaps, there is more money in foreign league.

”I made money from football and as far as I am concerned, football is the only profession that offers unlimited access to money. There is so much money to make from sign-on fees, salaries, bonuses and allowances for players, coaches and football agents. I am not sure if there is a profession that pays such money in exchange for a 90 minute job four or five times a month.

”I went into automobile business after my retirement. I was bringing vehicles into Nigeria from Europe and, sometimes, I relied on some of my friends who were doing the same business to ship the vehicles in for me.

”It was okay at the beginning but I ran into a big trouble when I allowed my friends and former football mates to ride on my calmness. I was selling to them on credit based on our relationship but they never came back to pay. It was the major trick of the trade that I did not take seriously. I ran into debt because I could not pay some of the landing bills.

”Each time I tried to recover my money from the debtors, it ended in misunderstanding and my relationship with friend was strained. At a time, I had to write off some of the debt because the debtors were either jobless or struggling to get daily meal.”

With his first move outside football hitting a snag, Omokaro retraced his step. He was rescued by the extra effort he had made to obtain coaching knowledge while still playing. It became a major weapon with which he fought the state of penury he was almost finding himself. However, before then, the former footballer withdrew from the limelight, taking shelter in a stronghold he had built long time ago.

”I realised that I was falling freely and that there was no one to save me. I thank God that I had a few property in the country and that was what I was living on. I have a house in Ibadan so I stayed there, hoping to address the situation clearly. It worked because one day, I approached my former employer, Shooting Stars, with a view to getting a job as a physical trainer.

”Late Tunde Bamidele just left the club so I was offered his job and worked with coach Zakare Baraje in 1997. That was how I found my way back into football. It would not have been possible if I had not made an attempt to earn the skill while playing. I later got a job at Rochas Okorocha Football Academy where I established my career in coaching. I also worked with Mighty Jets of Jos in 2006 before joining Delta Force.”

Omokaro belongs to the league of football greats in Africa. But even though a large chunk of his playing mates took their game beyond Nigeria, the player, who played alongside Humphrey Edobor, Austin Popo, Austin Igbinabaro, Osaro Obabaifo, Ademola Adesina, Samson Ozogula, Samson Siasia, Segun Odegbami, Rashidi Yekini and Ndubuisi Okosieme never did. He explained that the Nigeria Football Association stopped him from joining a club in Germany after a former Super Eagles coach, Clemence Westerhorf, had initiated the move.

”I was a strong player and my record of staying fit always was enough to earn me a place in a big club in Europe. I was on the verge of joining Stuttgart of Germany when the NFA accused Westerhorf of being a player agent rather than a coach of the Super Eagles.

”He had helped a few of my colleagues to get clubs in Europe but when he had the misunderstanding with the NFA, he called us and said that he was only helping us improve our skill by getting clubs for us in Europe. He said that he would no longer be involved because the NFA had accused him of abandoning his job. That was how the deal to join Stuttgart was terminated.”

Apart from failing to seal a deal in Germany, Omokaro was in Spain with two other Nigeria internationals, Segun Odegbami and Wilfred Agbonivbare.

”I was in Spain with Odegbami and Wilfred hoping to sign a contract with Rayo Valecano. But we were there at a time when the club was busy with season‘s matches so there was no time for real trial. I tried to train with a small club just to keep fit ahead of the trial period but the club management was furious at me. They said I had to face what I came for. It was an opportunity for me to do something else and that was when I took some lessons in coaching. It was the skill I fell back on when my business could not move forward again.”

During the 1988 Africa Nations Cup in Morocco, Omokaro was involved in a controversial tackle that resulted in an Algerian striker being taken off due to the injury sustained during the clash with the Nigerian defender. It was a moment that earned Omokaro the nickname 10-10. He said it was deliberate tackle ordered by the Eagles coach at the time.

”We lost Ademola Adesina to a red card that we felt was not just. He was the main man in the midfield and his sending off gave the Algerians an advantage. Coach Manfred Hoener told me to take care of the player and when I came in contact with him, I went a little too hard and knew I had injured him. I felt sorry for him it was a relief for us because they could not bring in another player, having exhausted their substitution.”

While comparing the senior national team during his time and today, Omokaro wondered how Chelsea player, Mikel Obi, became a Super Eagles player.

”It‘s all because of the problem of the Nigerian football. We played the game because of interest in those days but today, people play for what they can get. We have so many players in the national team who should not have been called to play for the team. Obi is not the type of player we need in the team because he contributes nothing to the squad performance. As a midfielder, how many goals has he scored for Chelsea and Nigeria? In our days, defenders scored very well and all our midfielders scored goals. Osaze Odemwingie and Daniel ****tu were the best players Nigeria paraded in Angola,” he said.
