Default Two Nigerian Al Qaeda Members in Court

El Rufai will say, "I told you so"...

FG arraigns two Nigerians suspected to be member of Al-Qaeda

    Source: Channelstv.com

The Federal Government has arraigned two Al-Qaeda suspects before a high court sitting in Abuja for allegedly aiding and abating terrorist activities in the country.

The two accused persons Olaniyi Lawal and Lukman Babatunde both pleaded not guilty to the six counts and were later remanded in prison custody pending their next appearance in court.

The first accused person Mr Lawal, 31, is said to have received monies in Saudi Riyals and in US Dollars equivalent to N1 million from a terrorist organisation known as Al-Qaeda in May 2011 to recruit and transport new members to Yemen for combat training in terrorism.

Mr Lawal alongside the second accused Mr Babatunde, 30, allegedly convened a meeting in June 2011 to further the objective of the proscribed organisation.

Also in the charge sheet, the second accused person was said to have provided facilities and logistics for the meeting.

The offence committed by the duo as stated in the charge is punishable under the terrorism and prevention act 2011.

The trial judge adjourned the case to October 2 and 3.

Haven't they found Boko Haram from the West and East? Nothing surprises me anymore. One thing they can't be sure of is if they are going to get their money's worth from Southerners. Even in the North, I remember the Hausa guy that packed a load of explosive into truck in Abuja, only to put a stone on the gas pedal so that he could enjoy his money. Things are different these days, nobody can be trusted.

By the way, don't let El Rufai fool you, he knows what he is talking about. Son of an angel.

Please, confirm- is it N1million or $1million? If the former (around $6000), then, we must be extremely cheap. Slavery resurrected!

Shebi I predicted this and Mikky jagga and ewuro said Yoruba Muslims could never do terrorism
The underlying thing there is Islam
I won't be surprised if Igbo Muslim converts are among them
Scarier times are ahead for if indeed terrorists have found willing participants amongst southerners then we have a humongous problem on our hands.

    Enyi,

i can't believe you actually made the above statement!!!!!!

This is a country of about 160 million people and of this number, about 140 million live below the poverty line.

Giving someone that makes less than N1000 a month, that kind of money is like taking kid to Disney World!

For $1000, most Nigerians would sell their mothers, and include the head of their first born child in the deal.

For some, $6,000 is an unheard of amount of money, especially if promised more where that came from.

Poverty in Nigeria is not just financial, it is intellectual, moral and common-sense poverty!!

Yes, I made the comment. It seems your view is from the perspective of the operators of the "recruiting agency". My opinion is based on the perspective of the recruits. How much, do you think, each of the potential recruits will receive? Apparently, you are indirectly supporting my position with the emboldened. Yes, we must be cheap commodity!

See the village psychic. All you see is Ewuro in your wet dreams. On every thread, it is Ewuro.....Ewuro.....Eweeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I have lost count of how many times Loving Ewuro has appeared in your posts from a couple of threads in the last 36 hours!
Tell me, show me where Ewuro ever said 'Yoruba muslims could never do terrorism'. You are really sick. You need help.
For your memory upgrade, what I said is Yoruba will not fight over a religion. Does that mean there are no Yoruba fanatics - Christian, Muslim or Ogun worshippers? Every society have their fanatics and bigoted people like you. Those two Yoruba Alqeada do not represent Yoruba views on Islam or religion. They also know that if they try to perrpetrate their bigotry in Yorubalamnd, the Ogun gods are there to send them to hell fire where they belong. Should their village Oba, chiefs or elders know they belong to Alqeada, they would be better off committing suicide. That is the main reason they operate in Abuja or the rest of the north where they could hide and perpetrate their evil.
I say you need more education, a deliverance from ignorance, such that you do not come off as the biggest 'christian' bigoted terrorist each time you deposit this type of odious post.
By the way, I ate Kilishi suya yesterday. It was brought from kano. It was delicious. Tell that to your bigoted comrades. I never die!

    Ah, o ga.

    Emi naa ti n roo,

Wipe Baba Ewuro o le so bee joo.

Yes I have been thinking about it,

Wondering how Baba Ewuro would say such.

And indeed I suspected the above was what you meant.

I wanted to speak, but I said nah, let's hear from the Oracle.

And now that the oracle has spoken, the obvious is re-emphasized:

The lady in question has a tendency to be literal in her views and interpretations.

Literal, such that issues that require circumspection are often broached with little depth.

Excuse me Auspicious and don't shoot the devil's advocate here...

but what is wrong with the old title?

What is really wrong with threads titled that way?

I have never gotten why it has ever been an issue causing so much contempt and acrimony on these pages but I won't deny knowing that people here use such to score points on each other...sad.

That being said, IS THAT ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE TITLE??

Is it not interesting and newsworthy in our understanding of how Al Qaeda operates that we have 2 southerners of whatever origin but this case Yoruba as suspected members?

Should it not be reflected in the title? Why? Is it a misrepresentation?

Are we that sensitive about issues concerning our various ethnicities that we cannot say it like it is? (and this goes to those that use such opportunities to score points for their ethnic groups too)

It is such occurrences as this that makes me realize that we are not one country and can never be one country...and maybe we should'nt even try sef.

Just see how something that affects the collective (as Nigerians) has become Us Vs Them and people stereotyping each other and themselves so much so, we ignore the issue.

    Mind boggling.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the headline
It makes news that Yoruba Muslims who are supposedly benign Muslims are beginning to produce hard core terrorists but of course we know the reason it had to be changed .

    Noted Anwulika.

But let me just say I wasn't as offended by the header than I was confused.

In other words, I was more confused than offended.

    I wasn't even offended.

I was like, what is so special about Yoruba being terrorists, when we know anyone can be a terrorist

And, God knows, when I saw "Two Southwesterners Arrested," I was like "Southwesterners?"

I wasn't sure if they were talking about Nigeria.

But then again it could be a case of my being distracted - as usual.

    Gotta go swim. You coming?

Abeg, how long have you been following the affairs of Nigeria?

You're only just now arriving at the above conclusion?

    Monica Mark in Lagos
    guardian.co.uk, Friday 6 July 2012 18.10 EDT
A Nigerian court has charged two citizens with channelling funds from al-Qaida into recruiting militants for training in Yemen, suggesting that the organisation is seeking to boost its footprint in Africa.

Olaniyi Lawal, 31, and Lukman Babatunde, 30, pleaded not guilty to charges of being members of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninusula (AQAP). With headquarters in Saudi Arabia, AQAP is the militant group's most powerful and active branch.

Abuja high court judge Gladys Olotu said Lawal, who is believed to have studied in Yemen, received Saudi riyals and local currency from al-Qaida "with intent that the said money shall be used to recruit and transport members of terrorist organisations from Nigeria to Yemen for combat training in terrorism".

The suspects are from Lagos, the commercial hub in the south of the country. Home to millions of Muslims and Christians, the city has not been as badly affected by terrorism as the north, which has suffered from a bloody campaign by homegrown Islamist militants Boko Haram.

Yaya Oguntola, a worshipper heading to a mosque for Friday prayers, said: "I am very shocked somebody can even think of bringing this kind of trouble to Lagos. All of these groups are an embarrassment to Nigeria, and worse, to Islam."

The charges come as the US steps up its military presence on the continent. General Carter Ham, head of US military operations in Africa, said last month that Boko Haram in Nigeria, al-Shabaab in Somalia and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb were sharing resources, and training fighters together. The US, which has growing oil interests in Africa, has rapidly expanded its secret intelligence operations under President Barack Obama, mainly using disguised spy planes, the Washington Post reported in June.

AQAP has helped to connect splinter groups in other regions. The group's reach in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has so far been limited to isolated incidents such as the one involving Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who was dubbed the "pants bomber". The 25-year-old Nigerian attempted to blow up a US-bound plane in 2009 after studying in Yemen.

Nigerian officials have dismissed claims that hardline Islamists within its borders receive support from al-Qaida's Saudi wing. However, Boko Haram spokesperson Qaqa said in January: "Al-Qaida are our elder brothers. Anything we want from them we ask them."

A Nigerian official said pressure from western countries after a series of bombings this year led President Goodluck Jonathan to sack his top defence adviser last month. "We have been under pressure to improve. The new national security adviser will be aiming to pick up where talks [with Boko Haram] collapsed," the official added.

Boko Haram militants stepped up their insurgency campaign around the time its members began receiving training from al-Qaida-affiliated groups in Mauritania and Algeria. Al-Qaida's north African wing, which operates in vast swathes of ungoverned desert, has flourished following a coup in Mali earlier this year.

Officials fear that a power vacuum will be a boon for radical groups scattered across the Sahel to strengthen ties.

A Mauritanian army general said: "Mauritania is used as a corridor when terrorists are recruited from Algeria to [al-Qaida's] base in Mali. We have seen in recent months an increase in movement through the country. We have increased our own movements and co-operation with allies in response."

I could have guessed the hard liners amongst SW Muslims would be from Kwara,Osun or Oyo not Lagos
    This is scary
Who knows how many more are out there
