According to CNN.com:

FBI agents are headed to the scene to assist, said Erik Vasys, spokesman for the FBI office in San Antonio. He had no other details.

On the Fort Hood Web site, the word "closed" is posted with the statement, "Effective immediately, Fort Hood is closed. Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel."

Fort Hood, with about 40,000 troops, is home to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division and elements of the 4th Infantry Division, as well as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 13th Corps Support Command. It is located near Killeen, Texas.

I was just thinking and wondering if this shooter is a war veteran who is suffering from the effect/damage to humanity which war inflicts on most warriors... PTSD etc

At least 12 people were killed and 31 wounded Thursday afternoon in a shooting at a military installation in Fort Hood, Texas, according to military spokesmen. Lt. General Bob Cone said in Texas that the shooter was an Army soldier who opened fire in a “readiness facility.”

Lt. Gen. Cone confirmed that the shooter had been killed. Two other Army soldiers were in custody as suspects.

President Obama said it was “horrifying” that American soldiers would face such a situation at home.

Fort Hood is one of the largest active-duty military installation in the country. The base serves about 218,000 people, including service members, retirees and military families.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas told Fox 4 News that one shooter was in custody and “another is still at large.”

She said she was told by authorities that there were as many as 30 wounded.

“It was a processing center where soldiers are processed to go to Iraq or Afghanistan.

“Our hearts go out,” she said. “These are soldiers who are getting ready to go out to Iraq or Afghanistan and their families were under stress already. This was just a terrible tragedy and we don’t even know the extent of it yet.”

At the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs said that President Obama has been briefed on the shooting.

Carroll Smith, spokeswoman for the Killeen Police Department, told the San Antonio Express-News that the post had not asked the local police for help.

This morning, when the President gave his opening remarks at the Tribal Nations Conference, the day looked very different. By 5:02 EST when he was scheduled to give closing remarks, it was clear that all Americans were rightly concerned with the tragedy in Texas, and the President took his time to give his thoughts and prayers:

Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. We don't yet know all the details at this moment; we will share them as we get them. What we do know is that a number of American soldiers have been killed, and even more have been wounded in a horrific outburst of violence.

My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and with the families of the fallen, and with those who live and serve at Fort Hood. These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to protect the rest of us on a daily basis. It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

I've spoken to Secretary Gates and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and I will continue to receive a constant stream of updates as new information comes in. We are working with the Pentagon, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security, all to ensure that Fort Hood is secure, and we will continue to support the community with the full resources of the federal government.
In the meantime, I would ask all Americans to keep the men and women of Fort Hood in your thoughts and prayers. We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident. And I want all of you to know that as Commander-in-Chief, there's no greater honor but also no greater responsibility for me than to make sure that the extraordinary men and women in uniform are properly cared for and that their safety and security when they are at home is provided for.

So we are going to stay on this. But I hope in the meantime that all of you recognize the scope of this tragedy, and keep everybody in their thoughts and prayers.

Well, that's the normal thing resonable people do, anyways.

Or, would you rather they make his religion an issue (at the expense of others of the same faith) and give perpetual moaners the excuse to moan about America being the reason for their erectile dysfunction again?

And by the way, when damage happens, you control it - not excercebate it.

He can give all the directives in the world but if eventually his religion is the reason for his murderous rampage, we will hear that.
It will be wrong for the media to hide that fact from the viewers in order to appease a certain group.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded. The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Military officials say the suspected shooter at Fort Hood was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.

The officials had access to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's military record. They said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.

The Virginia-born soldier was single with no children. He was 39 years old.

He is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

Or the two off-campus shooting incidents over this summer, involving VT students? What is it, if anything, about Virginia Tech that conditions its students to be suicidal. You have to be suicidal to start a shootout on an army base.

The combination is excellent for suicide and murder suicide. The guy had def lost it.

The problem is that shipping people off to fight a senseless war has dire effects. Since the advent of these two senseless wars, many soldiers have killed their loved ones, committed unmentionable crimes.
This man was on edge. He didn't want to be deployed Iraq. He was tired and he snapped. There is absolutley no justification for his actions. He would have been better off killing himself than putting all these other innocent men and women in harm's way.
It is a sad day, a really sad day.

Obama needs to act fast. These wars need to come to an end. It's high time we stopped playing voltron, defender of the universe. We need help too!
