Commissioners-Designate: EDHA announces names

BENIN CITY ––The names of 18 Commissioners-designate for Edo State were yesterday in Benin City announced by the state House of Assembly.


The nominees are : Dr. Joseph B. Lakoju (Akoko Edo), Dr. Moses Momoh (Etsako Central), Mr. Clem Agba (Etsako East) , Chief Lucky James (Etsako West), Mr. Abdul Oroh (Owan East), Mr. Alex Okoh (Esan South East), Mr. Akhere Vincent (Esan North East), Mr. Oriaifoh Idemudia (Esan Central), Comrade Didi Adodo (Esan West) and Mr. John Osagie (Igueben).


Other nominees are: Mr. Osunde Lordnard (Egor), Mrs. Sarah Adetugboboh (Ikpoba Okha), Mr. Erhauyi A. Obayagbonna (Ovia South West), Barr. Osagie Obayuwana (Ovia North East) Mr. Victor Enoghama (Oredo), Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Osarenren (Uhunmwode), Mr. Ahonsi I. Unuigbe (Owan West) and Mr. Jackson A. Eribo (Orhionmwon).
The list of the nominees is contained in a letter from the state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, addressed to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Zakawanu Garuba and he requested the House to give it a positive and accelerated consideration and gave the House his assurances of the highest esteem.


The Speaker urged all Commissioners-designate to forward 30 copies of their Curriculum Vitae (C.V) and other relevant documents to the House by 4:00 p.m. yesterday and that they must be present in the Chambers of the House by 10.00 a.m. today for screening.
Hon. Zakawanu expressed readiness of the Parliament to work with the state government towards ensuring that the people got the dividends of democracy.


He thanked the people and the press for their understanding and solicited for their co-operation, pointing out that members of the public should not hoard any information concerning the nominees and that the presence of the lawmakers in the Chambers showed they were prepared to work for the good of the state.


Beside emphasising that there was no conflict between the state government and the House, he warned detractors to allow the state move forward.


During plenary, the Speaker disclosed that the state government had responded substantially to the resolution of the House concerning the re- instatement of Permanent Secretaries, Directors and the sacked workers of Edo City Transport Service (ECTS).


He later announced that a member of the House of Assembly, Hon. Jude Ise Idehen lost his mother last Sunday and that after sitting, the legislators would pay a condolence visit to their bereaved colleague.

Commissioner nominee scores Edo private schools low

A NOMINEE for the post of a commissioner in Edo State, Dr. Ngozi Osarenren, has criticised private schools in the state for contributing to the poor educational fortune of the state.

She said their activities, which included examination malpractice were hugely responsible for the poor state of education in Edo State where it was discovered five years ago that the state was now one of the educationally disadvantaged states in the country.

"I know miracle centres where you pay a special amount of money to make your papers. There should be effective monitoring from the ministry of education so that all these schools if they have been given proper accreditation will have to be monitored regularly.

"What pained me so much was that five years ago, it was discovered that Edo State was one of the educationally disadvantaged states, this is a huge embarrassment," she lamented.

She spoke when the House yesterday began the screening of the 18 commissioner nominees presented to it by the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

It was a dramatic scene yesterday as four of the nominees were screened. While Dr. Tunde Lakoju, a former member of the House of Representatives from Akoko-Edo local council was simply told to take a bow as a honourable member, it was not easy for the nominee from Oredo, Victor Enoghama. There were discrepancies in his documentation as he was said to have presented three secondary school certificates instead of the mandatory two.

Besides, his claims of paying taxes to Nigeria when he was based in the United States of America was also questioned just as he was told to provide proofs on his purported resignation from two companies where he claimed to have worked in the U.S. before coming home to join Afribank. He was also told to show documents that he properly resigned his employment from the bank, and evidence of tax payments in the bank.

"There are a lot of discrepancies in your documentation", the Speaker, Zakawanu Garuba, said before he directed him to present 30 copies each of evidence of tax payment at Afribank.

Osarenren, a lecturer at the University of Lagos also revealed to the House that so many schools in the state lacked counsellors, a development, which negates a prerequisite in the educational policy of the country.

The House also screened Mr. Clem Agba from Etsako East local council before adjourning till today.

Top on the list of the 18 commissioner nominees were Dr. Tunde Lakoju from Akoko-Edo Local council, a former member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the then All Peoples Party (APP), there is Lucky James, former council chairman of Etsako West, who won the best local government award in the year 2000 as chairman of the council, another former member of the House of Representatives and former Executive Director, Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Abdul Oroh from Owan East and renowned human rights activist and the national chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Osagie Obayuwana. Obayuwana was the party's gubernatorial candidate in 2003 and he was chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and United Action for Democracy (UAD). He is from Ovia North East local government council.
