U.S. bars foreign Heads of State from Obama's inauguration
By Chinedu Offor, Correspondent, Washington DC

Washington has pulled the rug from the feet of dozens of heads of state, princes and prominent government officials, including Nigeria, hoping to use the January 20 inauguration of Barack Obama to polish their democratic credentials.

The administration has placed a ban on leaders of the various countries who have indicated interest to be in Washington from attending the event.

A statement from the office of the American Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Ranneberger, said this is in accordance with past practice.

"In keeping with past practice, the chiefs of diplomatic missions in Washington and their spouses are invited to represent their countries at the inauguration.

"Without exception, no other official foreign delegations from any countries in the world are invited to the inauguration," Rannenberger stated.

The tough talk from Washington followed intense lobby by senior government officials in most of the countries accredited to the United States of America to have their leaders present at the historic occasion.

White House sources said some world leaders have phoned outgoing President George Bush and Obama to lobby for a place at the event, but have been rebuffed.

"We have been swamped by requests by presidents, prime ministers and other prominent people the world over, but the new administration wants to do things differently by sticking to the rules" a State Department official stated.

Sources said the ban on foreign leaders was also to discourage potential embarrassment as such leaders in the past have been known to make private demands on a new president.

The White House said Obama was also upset by reports made by diplomats of the pressures from their home government of securing private time with him for their heads of government as a condition for keeping their plum jobs.

It is, however, unknown if Nigerian falls into that category.

The U.S. President-elect defeated Republican John McCain, a war veteran, in over 60 percent of all the 52 states in the America.

Obama, whose ancestry was traced to Kenya, swept to office on the wings of change as American economy was badly hit by recession.

His election was also made easier with the manner out-going President Bush ran the economy of the most powerful nation on earth.
