Police recover arms near Alaafin's palace

The Oyo State Police Command has begun an investigation into the circumstances that surrounded the discovery of a cache of arms and ammunition at an uncompleted building opposite the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
A police first information report by the Oyo Area Command on Wednesday explained that the arms and ammunition were discovered at Aremo area.
Some police detectives, who acted on intelligence report, were said to have besieged the building and laid ambush for the owner.
They were said to have removed the items when nobody was found looking for them. Items recovered included a pump-action gun, three single-barrelled guns and two expended cartridges.
The development coincided with the 70th anniversary of the monarch, which had drawn many people from far and near to the town in the last one week.
Although police said nobody had been arrested in connection with the discovery, there was an indication that some armed robbers might have been using the uncompleted building as their hideout.
The Area Commander for Oyo, Mr. Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, declined comments.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the state command, Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, confirmed the incident. She said full investigations had started on the matter.
He said, "We are suspecting that some members of the underworld may be using the uncompleted building as their hideout and trying to hide under the image and reverence of Alaafin's palace.
"We, however, thank God that we are able to nip their evil intention the bud. We will not relent in our efforts to rid the state of criminals."
It was learnt that the recovered arms and ammunition had been deposited with the police armourer for safe keeping.
