Is Yar'adua Fading Out As Ibrahim Babangida Restarts His Presidential Campaigns

Yar'adua Fading Out As Ibrahim Babangida Restarts His Presidential Campaigns

    Saharareporters, New York

    Dateline: Abuja, December 3, 2007

A major political shocker may be awaiting Nigerians in the coming year as subterranean plans are in advanced stages to maneuver former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, into office as the nation’s president. With Yar’adua’s health deteriorating and the presidential electoral tribunal likely to annul his “election,” a coalition of political forces spearheaded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo is soon to commence the public selling of Babangida as the next president.

Several sources close to Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo told Saharareporters that Babangida’s presidency is, in the words of one of them, “all but a done deal. Nigerians are expected to oppose it, but it’s going to be a coronation.”

The move to install Babangida, the sources told us in separate interviews, has been afoot for several months, but is now in the stage of mobilization—meaning that the idea is now being sold to “critical stakeholders within and outside Nigeria,” according to one source.

Two factors have driven the effort to position Babangida for the presidency. One is the widely held speculation that the presidential election tribunal is likely to rule that the so-called presidential elections of April 21 were too marred by irregularities to stand. Our sources said that Obasanjo and his team have recognized that, even if the federal court of appeal upholds the election, that verdict would be overturned on appeal to the Supreme Court.

The second factor is the deteriorating health of Malam Umar Musa Yar'adua, the quiet Chemistry professor who inherited a manipulated election in April. Reliable sources have told Saharareporters that, during his most recent medical check-up in Germany, Malam Yar’adua received a dire prognosis. His German doctors told him that his health was now in an extremely precarious state, and ordered him to avoid undue stress. Part of his doctors’ suggestion was that he should drastically reduce his hours of operation and that he ought to consider quitting altogether.

On returning from his medical trip, Yar’adua told Obasanjo, the man who arranged his illegitimate ascension to power, that he was resigned to his fate. He also told the former president of his intention not to appeal should the ruling of the electoral tribunal go against his election.

Political associates of Yar’adua describe his mood as one of resigned acceptance of the impending, indeed inefact that a combination of factors may be converging to bring an inevitable end to his fabled tenure.

Our sources say that Obasanjo was elated when he heard about Yar’adua’s decision not to appeal any adverse electoral verdict—and his decision, on health grounds, not to seek to be the ruling party’s presidential flag bearer in new presidential polls.

According to one source familiar with the inside political calculations, Obasanjo welcomed the opportunity to sneak Babangida into the presidency. “Yar’adua has largely kept the pact he had with Obasanjo,” said this source who is now a go-between in the negotiations between Obasanjo and Babangida. “Yar’adua has protected Obasanjo’s massive fortune accumulated in office. He has also ignored calls for Obasanjo’s prosecution for criminal acts committed in office. However, Obasanjo feels humiliated Obasanjo that Yar’adua not only reversed some of his policies and last-minute deals but also made a fanfare of doing so. Obasanjo is particularly stung by Yar’adua’s cancellation of the sale of Nigeria’s refineries to a group in which the ex-president has substantial interests. OBJ is also irate that Yar’adua has openly admitted to flaws in the last elections which were designed by Obasanjo and executed by Professor Maurice Iwu.”

In addition, revealed several of our sources, the former president has been jittery lately. One reason is Yar’adua’s reluctance to publicly defend Obasanjo in the face of shrill denunciations of the former president’s tenure. Another is that Yar’adua’s associates have been quietly revealing to the media details of the former president’s corrupt deals, including billions of dollars of unaccounted oil revenues, fuel importation deals, and Obasanjo’s large interests in agro as well as telecommunications businesses.

“Obasanjo has come to the conclusion that Babangida as president is the ideal person to give him the kind of protection he wants from Yar’adua, but is not getting.”

Armed with news of Yar’adua’s precarious health and the high odds that the presidential election will be invalidated, Obasanjo dispatched his trusted aide, Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba, to meet with Babangida. “Over the last month, Uba has been a regular presence at Babangida’s Minna mansion,” said our sources. He is acting as Obasanjo’s chief point man in negotiations aimed at smoothing Babangida’s path to the seat of power.

While Babangida sits on assets worth billions of dollars that he accumulated during his years as a military dictator, Obasanjo has, through Mr. Uba, pledged to place billions more at the disposal of General Babangida (ret).

Babangida is one of the most hated public figures in Nigerian, but he as well as Obasanjo and others working on his ascendancy are banking on using their war chest to make him unstoppable. “There are only two viable opposition figures who can stand up to Babangida, and they are General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar,” said one source familiar with the plan. “But neither man is much of an opposition. Not only does Buhari have no money, he is also effectively partyless.” A break-away faction of Buhari’s ANPP has been swallowed up by the ruling PDP. “Atiku is a more formidable opponent because, like Obasanjo, he also enriched himself in office and he commands the loyalty of some top politicians. But over the last two or three years, Obasanjo did a good job of whittling down Atiku’s business interests and wealth. The former vice president doesn’t have the cash to be a match in the coming political clash.”

Several sources told Saharareporters that Obasanjo and Babangida have wooed many politicians from within Atiku’s group with offers of plum contracts or political appointments once Babangida takes over.

The Babangida campaign has also began to mobilize international support. Last week, Babangida returned from a trip to Germany where he underwent medical check-up and sold his candidacy to German and European Union officials. Next on the agenda: To assure European, British and American corporations and nations that their business as well as strategic interests in Nigeria would be protected under a Babangida presidency.

Two days after he returned from the German trip, Babangida convened a meeting of top Hausa-Fulani politicians. The motive was to sell the idea for his adoption as the consensus northern candidate. Atiku, aware of the agenda of the meeting, refused to attend.

In keeping with his pledge of loyalty to Obasanjo, Yar’adua has been cooperating with the plan to position Babangida as his successor. A source told us that Yar’adua’s refusal to join the rising chorus of Nigerians who want Maurice Iwu to resign as chairman of the electoral commission is part of an agreement. “Once Babangida is adopted as the PDP’s candidate, the party needs Iwu to run the elections and announce Babangida as the winner. Obasanjo has told his inner circle that he has absolute trust that Iwu would execute the game plan. Obasanjo doesn’t want to risk having a more independent-minded umpire calling the election.”

One source said that Obasanjo has a deep psychological motive for backing Babangida. “It’s not just that Babangida can and will do a better job than Yar’adua of shielding Obasanjo from legal harassment. During Obasanjo’s presidency, he and Babangida had their fights. But Obasanjo, who has details of IBB’s corruption, gave his word to protect the ex-general against prosecution—and he kept his word. He trusts that Babangida will do the same for him.

“More importantly, Obasanjo has been rattled by the degree of criticism that has followed him since he left office in May. He calculates that Babangida is the man to match or surpass his record of corruption. That way, Nigerians would be forced to focus on the new bad guy in town. The former president is also betting that, when Babangida unleashes his thieving hordes on the nation, Nigerians would start speaking nostalgically about Obasanjo’s eight-year tenure.”

One source told us that Babangida’s “election” will eclipse the record of rigging established by the April 21 polls that produced Yar’adua. Local and foreign monitors had ascertained that Umar Yar'adua came to power through the most crooked of political processes known to electoral politics in the history of Africa.

Part of the tragedy is that Yar'adua was never interested in running for the presidency until Obasanjo drafted him into the race—and then used blackmail to force other would-be aspirants in the ruling party to renounce their ambitions and scamper for safety.

Yar’adua also has a history of serious health problems ranging from episodes of depression to a debilitating kidney disease that saw him collapse during the presidential campaigns. He was quickly flown out to Germany on a Julius Berger air-ambulance.

In a perverse attempt to cover up Yar’adua’s health crisis, the PDP leadership used top campaign officials, including Dr. Dora Akunyili, to spread rumors in the press to the effect that Yar'adua had died in Germany. The motive behind this deliberate falsehood sold by the PDP was simply to make Yar’adua’s survival look impressive.

The trick achieved its aim, as public worries about Yar'adua's health problems disappeared altogether as soon as the candidate returned from his German trip.

Yar’adua’s hyped “death” provided melodramatic material for former President Obasanjo to showcase the candidate’s “vigorous” strength in rallies across Nigeria. Obasanjo would make telephone calls to Yar'adua's hospital bed to ask the now infamous rhetorical question: “Umaru, are you dead?” to which Yar’adua would answer “No, Baba, I am still alive.”

As soon as Yar'adua arrived Nigeria, he managed to attend a major rally in Akure, Ondo State before going into limbo. It was left to Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu to perfect a rigging plan for the presidential election.

The rigging was so audacious that a bewildered member of their PDP caucus revealed to Saharareporters a day before the election that Yar'adua would win by 70%, with Buhari at second and Atiku a distant third. Some skeptical readers did not take Saharareporters seriously when we published the “pre-determined” election results. But many believed when Maurice Iwu announced his cooked results when only twelve out of Nigeria's 36 state electoral commissioners had submitted their manipulated results to the electoral commission headquarters.

Obasanjo had set the tone by giving a short but sober national broadcast explaining why the nation must accept the electoral results. Shortly after Obasanjo ended his national broadcast, a boisterous but confused Maurice Iwu walked into a packed press conference accompanied by fierce-looking security agents to announce Yar'adua as the winner of the "Presidential Election" by our predicted margin of 69.9%. Iwu declined to take any questions from local or international journalists at the venue.

On May 29, 2007, Yar’adua took the office of oath and acknowledged that his election was marked by irregularities. His answer was to set up an electoral reform commission that many opposition parties and parties dismissed as a ruse.

Despite his outward mien of good health, the "new president" runs regular health therapy in Aso Rock. One source revealed that Yar’adua’s day starts with regular sessions with a medical team. His public appearances have been rare and sporadic, with ministers and other aides often delegated to represent him at events.

After receiving grave prognosis during his last health check-up, Yar’adua has further scaled back his involvement in the day-to-day running of his “administration.”

His health crisis and almost inevitable cancellation of his election has given Obasanjo the opportunity to once again manipulate the political direction of the country in a negative direction.

One concern is whether there is sufficient opposition within the nation to challenge the imposition of Babangida. One prominent opposition figure, a lawyer, was taken aback when Saharareporters apprised him of the plan to install Babangida. “If this is crazy plan is true,” he said in fury, “be sure that many Nigerians will fight it with every ounce of blood in our bodies.”

The devil Obasanjo should not be given room! He and his compatriot Babangida cannot offer the world any good. They will only cause confusion. Any reasonable person in any part of our world will not support them. They do not serve the interest of any nation on this planet. They serve the interest of trouble makers.

Na wa!! I thought I was the only one that found this story highly hilarious.

OBJ and IBB working together to install IBB as the next president? yeah right!!! look.....pigs flying!!

IBB has tested the waters, he is highly unlikely to vie for elective or selective post in Nigeria, he wants it bad but not that bad. IBB will rather be a 'kingmaker' than a king in the current political climate in Nigeria. This is one of the reasons for the current games going on in Abuja.

And OBJ, working to install IBB - Na, not his style at all.

Unless the writer can inform us of these sources I will take this news with a pinch of salt.

Yep. I wouldn't easily discount this story. Ultimately, it may not come to fruition, but it is a believable story, nonetheless.

For one, OBJ appears to be stalling the PDP convention, not just because he doesn't want to be out-maneuvered in the power-play, but also because he is waiting for something to happen, before the convention is held.

    What could this 'something' be?

    DoubleW

It is quite surprising that one of the main pointmen of IBB I spoke with a couple of hours ago found this story quite as amusing as I did.

IBB has tested the waters, if you know his persona, you will know IBB has fish he is frying now - this obj will install him as president - humm, he will not fall for that.

Think of the politics involved - nah DW, nah!

I wont be surprised if this is a story peddled by Obj people to put the frightners on Nigerians!

    DW,

In addition to what VOR has said, I think Babangida is too smart to get deeply involved with an Obasanjo who sidelined him when he was angling for the PDP Presidential nomination last year. I also think that the fact that he didn't get the nomination greatly demystified him in the eyes of many so that he isn't quite seen as much of a 'Maradona' today (although authors of stories like these seem desperate to 'rehabilitate' him )

    OK...VOR & SLB, point taken.

But, why do you think OBJ is stalling the PDP convention? Afterall, he (and everyone else) knows that it cant be stalled for ever.

So, what is he waiting for? The Tribunal verdict maybe?

Umm umm - not the verdict, that doesn't come within the scheme of things right now.

Why is Obj stalling? To retain relevance - he is being seriously schemed out, he thought he had an errand boy in UMYA - but that one is playing cards baba nor understand, very unlike Shagari. If convention holds now, he is finished!!

Also some forces (IBB included) are making what he believed would be an easy ride at this year's convention, i.e. installing his stooge (Egwu) as Chairman of the party and affirming himself as BOT Chair, a difficult task. IBB is also gunning for the post of BOT chairman - so you see why I find the above story a bit suspect? Baba apparently has gone to hire campaign managers for the convention - odikwa serious!!

The Etteh impeachment and Bankole being made speaker has also caused kata kata in his plans. You cannot have speaker and BOT chairman - Both Egba men and both from the same state!!

I knew he would stall for time. How he wants to play it now, he is being seriously cornered is another thing, but we'll watch and see. However he is dealing with masters of the game - his survival is dicey. Now Obj doesn't have state security and EFCC at his beck and call to use on opponents, he is forced to play the political game - which I know he is not good at, he has no loyalists (what their salt) to work for him. Have you also noticed how some of his people are getting into some sort of yawa or the other (keep them busy!!! )

As for the convention, I believe the forces working against him would soon find a way out, from what I hear - Iwu's butt is on fire and he is not expected to last. Once INEC has been subdued - convention holds! shikena!!!

Dirty games but ME JUST LOVES IT!!!!

Indeed. Is this really from Saharareporters? Or is somebody trying to sabotage their otherwise good work?

IBB accuses OBJ of institutionalizing corruption in Naija. Is this a question of the pot calling the kettle black or two pots trying to decide which one is darker.

An interesting tit-bit in this story is that OBJ was offered the Presidency after the Shagari coup!

    Source
Gap toothed former military President General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) has taken a swipe at the past administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as corrupt. In an exclusive interview with a monthly magazine People Monthly, Babangida accused the Obasanjo administration of institutionalising corruption in the country.

He berated Obasanjo for achieving less than he (IBB) achieved while in office as military president in spite the huge revenue the administration got from oil.

“What accrued to us as an administration was about N565 billion. That is less than what was accruing to the Obasanjo government in a year. What they were getting in one year, we got less in eight years. And I know what we achieved with that little amount of money in eight years. If I had that kind of money, may be we could have gone places. That I am absolutely confident about.

“The world is made to believe that my administration institutionalised corruption. Now, we know better who institutionalised corruption. So, I am grateful to God and may be history will eventually vindicate us,” he stated.

He also said Obasanjo probed him for eight years between 1999 and this year when he left Aso Rock.

The Minna-born general also supported recent moves by the Yar’Adua administration to reverse most of the policies and programmes of the Obasanjo administration, describing it as “perfectly in order”.

Babangida argued that as President, Yar’Adua has the responsibility to right all the wrongs that were done by the Obasanjo administration.

“Where there are a lot of cries by members of the society, it is the duty of the president to look into whatever is causing this. So to me, it is not a surprise (that Yar’Adua is reversing most of Obasanjo’s programmes), it is perfectly legitimate,” he stated.

He said Obasanjo also reversed some programmes of his predecessor General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), immediately he was sworn in as civilian president in 1999. “I think what the administration of President Yar’Adua is doing now is perfectly in order,” he submitted.

Babangida also revealed the role played by Obasanjo in the 1983 coup which toppled the civilian administration of President Shehu Shagari.

He explained that the 1983 coup actually wanted to instal Obasanjo as president after toppling Shagari but that the Ota chicken farmer rejected the offer.

“It is true we wanted to bring General Obasanjo back as head of state in 1984. But to be fair to General Obasanjo, he rejected the offer. He said no. He said it would destroy his integrity; that he handed over to Shagari and that it is not right for him to get involved. But he (Obasanjo) said he was not stopping us from going ahead with the plot,” he explained.

He also said Obasanjo probed him for eight years between 1999 and this year.

    SLB

Though I am yet to hear from people I consider as authority on issues like this, but the likelihood of this event is not far-fetched. I can actually feel it.

Being smart is getting what you want, IBB will play with Obasanjo anytime to get Presidency back. Events has since overtaken what made OBJ to prefer Yar'Adua to IBB. Yar'Adua has proven to be "unreliable" to Obasanjo. There is a momentum gathering out there for Obasanjo to be investigated and prosecuted wihich Yar'Adua seems too weak or not bothered to check, he has reversed a lot of decisions dear and close to Obasanjo's heart.

IBB on the other hand is one guy you can trust either for negative or positive convenant, he is a gret believer in the "Cult of Generals" He does not disrespect his seniors and will get Obasanjo's back, and I think more than anything else Obasanjo desperately need somebody like IBB.
A strong character with enough popularity to stem the tide. IBB was reported to be supporting Obasanjo's PDP BOT Chairmanship recently, I know there must be consideration for that. I think this information is real. Whether the plans will succeed is what I am not sure of.

Moreso I have always believe that Yar'Adua's administration will short live one way or the other. I will advise that you guys be prepared so that you are not caught unawares.

There is got to be a new alliance and a new reason for IBB to be doing this for OBJ after what was reported about them as posted by Ikechiji.

PDP BOT Chairmanship: IBB moves to save OBJ
From Idowu Samuel and Bola Badmus
    Wednesday, November 21, 2007
FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo may have started regaining the confidence of General Ibrahim Badamasi following indications that is supporting him to remain as the chairman of Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development is sequel to reported plans by some aggrieved members of the ruling party to remove him as the BOT chairman.
One of the political associates of General Babangida, based in Kaduna State, Alhaji Nasir Sani Yar’Adua, told the Nigerian Tribune that the PDP would not dispense with Obasanjo as the BOT chairman with support from a politician like Babangida.

He said Obasanjo still enjoyed support from members of the party like General Babangida whom he said had always been rising to his support at crucial times.

Yar’Adua said contrary to general impression, both Obasanjo and Babangida had been relating meaningfully, having come a long way in the services of Nigeria.

IBB, he said, was not fighting with anyone, stressing that the supposed frosty relationship between him and Obasanjo was a media creation.

He, however, denied knowledge of moves by Babangida to save Obasanjo from being removed as the BOT chairman of the PDP.

He said Babangida would not involve himself in the PDP politics in a personal manner, describing him as a team player whom he said preferred due process that would allow a credible election in the party at any level.

He said the PDP had an internal mechanism to determine which of its members got what at any point in time.

However, facts have started emerging about a plot by the aggrieved Northern politicians to ease former President Obasanjo from the office of Board of Trustees of the PDP.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’Abba, has raised a forum of former members of the National Assembly to whittle down Obasanjo’s influence in the ruling party before its forthcoming national convention.

Mallam Umar Farouk, Secretary of the Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice, disclosed this to the Nigerian Tribune, stating that the game plan by the North was to ensure the victory of a former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, at the PDP’s national convention fixed tentatively for January 5.
The forum of the former National Assembly members is currently headed by an ex-House of Representatives member, Honourable Segun Damiro, one of Na’Abba’s right hand men in his days as the speaker.

At the moment, members of the forum are said to be busy mobilising support for Anyim against his perceived main contender, Dr. Sam Egwu, former governor of Ebonyi State.

The forum, according to Farouk, was banking on a possible support for Anyim by National Assembly members who form part of the electorate at the PDP convention to achieve the agenda.

Anyim’s disposition to the Northern agenda, according to investigations, is one reason why his candidature appears to enjoy overwhelming support from the politicians, the former Senate President having in the past engaged Obasanjo in a long duel during his tenure as the Senate President.

Findings revealed that after ensuring Anyim’s victory, an amendment of the constitution would be tabled with a view to removing Obasanjo as the party’s BOT chairman.

Obasanjo is generally considered as a threat to the interest of the North in the ruling party owing to what is believed to be his influence over the government of President Yar’Adua.

The 2 pieces (the later posted by Ikechiji) cancels out each other. Both are downright ridiculous.

Bush summons Yar'adua to the White House over AFRICOM.

    Saharareporters, New York

Worried by Nigeria’s reluctance to support America’s plan to locate an African Command of the U.S. military in the Gulf of Guinea, President George W. Bush has asked Umar Musa Yar’adua to visit the White House on December 13.

Sources close to the planned meeting told Saharareporters that President Bush wants to pressure Yar’adua to reverse Nigeria’s opposition to AFRICOM.

Bush is planning to tell Yar’adua that the international cloud of illegitimacy hanging over his government would be a thing of the past if the Nigerian plays to the American script.
U.S. diplomat Mr. Negroponte delivered Bush’s summons to Yar’adua during the American’s recent visit to Nigeria. The two parties then agreed on December 13 as a suitable date for Yar’adua’s visit. Yar'adua will visit the US after another sojourn to Portugal for reasons that weren't disclosed to Saharareporters.

Not only is Yar'adua opposed to the location of the U.S. military command in the Gulf of Guinea, he has also seriously lobbied smaller African governments, especially those of Liberia and Equatorial Guinea, to reject the deal.

Piqued by Yar’adua’s opposition, the U.S. government is reportedly seeking to exploit the Nigerian’s political vulnerability to push him towards accepting the command.

A source told Saharareporters that, apart from the AFRICOM issue, the two leaders are set to discuss the subterranean moves to maneuver General Ibrahim Babangida (ret.) into place as Yar’adua’s successor-in-waiting in the event of a judicial cancellation of the April elections or Yar’adua’s incapacitation on health grounds.

Yar’adua is expected to sell Babangida as a candidate who is likely to protect U.S. corporate and geo-political interests.

In a related development, a source has told Saharareporters that General Babangida’s recent criticism of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s policies was a gimmick calculated to give the Nigerian public the impression that a rift exists between the two men.

Saharareporters earlier revealed an ongoing political plan, sponsored by Obasanjo, to install Babangida as Nigeria’s “elected” president as soon as Yar’adua’s failing health forces him to quit, or the presidential electoral tribunal orders the cancellation of the election.

On his part, former President Obasanjo has started "reconciliation" moves to appease his former enemies; our sources said the Ota farmer has already sent emissaries to General Buhari and personally met with IBB to discuss Yar'adua's failing health and his intention to support them in fresh elections. Aside from Babangida, Buhari is not buying Obasanjo's story while his erstwhile deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has refused to meet with his emissaries.
