Actress Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from her superstar husband, actor Tom Cruise, in New York City, a long-time attorney for Cruise said on Friday.

"Katie filed for divorce yesterday. Tom is very saddened by that, and right now he is concentrating on the kids," Los Angeles-based attorney Bert Fields told Reuters.

Fields, who said he was not representing Cruise in the divorce, but was speaking as a friend, would not give a reason for the filing, saying only that "Tom wants to be very private."

A representative for Holmes could not immediately be reached for comment, but earlier on Friday, People magazine cited Holmes's lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe, as confirming the divorce.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Wolfe told People. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

The pair married in an elaborate ceremony in Italy in 2006, and they have one daughter together, 6-year-old Suri. Because of their status as top Hollywood stars, their relationship has been closely followed in the celebrity and tabloid press.

Cruise, 49, has been among the world's highest-paid actors, with films ranging from 1983's "Risky Business" to the hugely successful "Mission: Impossible" series and currently playing musical "Rock of Ages."

He was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers and actress Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children.

Holmes, 33, rose to fame on the U.S. television series "Dawson's Creek" and has worked in big-budget movies such as "Batman Begins." Her marriage to Cruise is her first.

There is so much fine boy or hard man that a guy can do. When age sets in, and seasons change and there is nothing of value to offer beyond being a movie star, then you have a problem. Ageing stars have had their days, and the space must be renewed for others to blossom, even their spouses. It is the reality of the western world. It is your time and your choices that count, commitments are weighed on fabulous advantages and security.There will always be another person that needs to be propped up lurking somewhere. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have reportedly been battling over how best to raise their six-year-old daughter Suri.

The 33-year-old actress filed for divorce from the Hollywood star yesterday and is seeking sole custody of their child. The move appears to have taken 'deeply saddened' Tom, 49, by surprise, although the couple have not been seen together in public since February.

Katie, who was brought up as a Catholic, is said to be increasingly uncomfortable with Tom Cruise's views on bringing up children within the Scientology church.

Celeb blogger Perez Hilton reported an insider as saying: "Tom is nowhere near as strict as Katie is and doesn't believe in disciplining Suri, whereas Katie believes that's important. Tom basically treats Suri as a little adult, and that causes some major clashes over parenting style."

Katie recently started Scientology school wearing bright red lipstick.

Scientologists believe children are individuals, capable of making their own decisions.

In an interview in 2010 Tom echoed this approach when he said: "I say to Suri, 'I really want you to eat this protein if you're going to have that sugar.'

"She looks at me and she goes: 'Dad, I don't think you should try to force me to do something I don't want to do.'

"She likes to dress herself and wears whatever she wants. I'm not gonna tell her different."

Apparently, It was very cold that day and little miss refused to wear a jacket and mommy and daddy just let her because she is an adult and can make her own decisions.

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chief executive and outspoken octogenarian media mogul, took to Twitter on Sunday to weigh in on the breakup of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. And Murdoch's tweets about Scientology sparked a big backlash.

"Scientology back in news," Murdoch tweeted. "Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in [hierarchy]."

The owner of Fox News, Wall Street Journal and New York Post followed the "cult" comment with another tweet.

"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop," Murdoch wrote. "Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."

While Cruise is often associated with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, the Los Angeles Times noted, he has also starred in films for 20th Century Fox--the studio owned by News Corporation--and is "known for being prickly about being challenged about his involvement with Scientology."

Murdoch, though, is standing by his comments.

"Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks," he wrote later. "Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."

After a user asked Murdoch for his thoughts on Mormonism, he responded: "Mormonism a mystery to me, but Mormons certainly not evil."

Earlier Sunday, Murdoch used Twitter to criticize Mitt Romney's campaign.

"Met Romney last week," Murdoch wrote. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign--comprised of "tough" Chicago political veterans--will be tough to beat, Murdoch added, unless Romney "drops old friends from team and hires some real pros. Doubtful."

It's not the first time the 81-year-old has expressed his doubts about Romney's electability. Last week, Murdoch tweeted: "When is Romney going to look like a challenger? Seems to play everything safe, make no news except burn off Hispanics."

The divorce of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes is rapidly becoming the biggest tabloid story of the year, and fingers are pointing at the controversial Church of Scientology as the primary cause of their breakup.

Holmes, who initiated the divorce proceedings, is reportedly eager to prevent their 6-year-old daughter Suri from being indoctrinated in her father's strict religious beliefs.

According to TMZ, Holmes feared that Cruise was planning on sending Suri to join the Church of Scientology's Sea Organization (Sea Org), which functions almost as a religious order within the church; former members have described it as embodying an "odd mixture of military and corporate management styles."

The majority of Sea Org's membership is purportedly longtime members of the church and children of Scientologists. Kids as young as 5 can be sent to join the group to learn more about the religion without being accompanied by their parents.

All members of Sea Org are reportedly required to sign a billion-year contract to demonstrate their commitment to the organization. (Sea Org was a particular focus of journalist Lawrence Wright's epic article on Scientology in the New Yorker in 2011, in which Hollywood director and former Scientologist Paul Haggis famously said, "I was in a cult for 34 years.")

Scientology wasn't the only issue of faith that caused problems for the family; Holmes' devoutly Catholic parents often clashed with her husband, particularly where their granddaughter was concerned. But Holmes is now reportedly seeking sole legal custody of Suri to prevent her from being sent to Sea Org and to remove her from her current school, the New Village Leadership Academy in California, which has strong ties to the Church of Scientology.

Holmes is filing for divorce in New York, where judges tend to favor appointing sole custody to one parent, to avoid placing children in the middle of disputes. Cruise, meanwhile, is fighting to move proceedings to California, where courts prefer to give divorcing parents joint custody of their children.

TMZ has also reported that Holmes worries she's being followed by representatives of Scientology, including the "mysterious" occupants of a white Cadillac Escalade and a black Mercedes SUV seen parked close to her apartment. In an e-mail to the New York Daily News, Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church of Scientology International, said, "There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes."

Me too I am a Tom Cruise fan and had hoped against hope that it will work out for them with all that couch jumping. Not that I expected it to. And what an awful timing as well, as he just turned 50 today. I suppose it will be a cause for some deep reflection for him.
