I read the report this morning in the Daily Mail, so sad the judge left him to go scot free with just a 2K pounds charge.

Its a young marriage with the lady still at the medical school and just wondering how she is going to cope with the trauma.

Is it justice though? I mean, were the scales balanced at the end or were they tilted? Was the lady holding the scales blindfolded or was she just blinded by the status of the perpetrator?

I also noticed that nowhere in this report was the actions of this particular man assumed to be representative of the characteristics of an english man or, of a cambridge graduate. His actions were simply reported as incidents that he was solely responsible for.

Now, compare this to how crimes committed by Nigerians (or any other 'alien' persons) are reported. In such reports, you will find that more often, the nationality (or other distinguishing characteristic) is repeated over and over until ones start thinking that perhaps this nationality (or other characteristic) was a crucial part of the motivating force that drove this person to do what he did.

Also, and this is the saddest part, I have also seen our own people, when reporting on some so-called crime committed by some Nigerian, talking as if they want us all to feel a way because of what this person did. As if we should feel guilty because we are from the same neighbourhood as this person.

Well, just as no virtue is exclusive to any 'race' or creed, so is no vice excluded from any 'race' or creed. We are all capable of all the badness known to man. More times, the only thing that seperates people from what they scorn/criticize is opportunity, circumstance, blind luck, and environment.

Yesterday he walked free from court with his mother at his side after a judge decided not to jail him.

A report recommended a community service order, but Recorder William Featherby questioned how Read would fit it in around his long working hours.

Unbelievable that in this day and age with women dying every day due to domestic violence that there is a judge who renders this type of judgement. Makes me wonder what he is doing behind closed doors. Good for the woman. Perhaps as she moves forward in a medical career she will be able to help other women in the same situation before they become statistics. In the meantime, remove that judge.

Inching Toward Insanity

Let's get this out of the way early: I don't support the fighting of dogs. I am not sitting here in a Michael Vick jersey snacking on Labrador fajitas thinking that his 12 month plea bargain is the greatest injustice since Sacco and Vanzetti. Please don't send me emails saying that I hate dogs. Please don't write that I am a "supporter" of Michael Vick, whatever the hell that means. I don't love dogs. I don't hate dogs. I will say I'm not a vegetarian. I love a good haggis. I gargle with gravy. I think short ribs are a "side." None of that means I hate dogs or think Vick is some kind of political prisoner. Like many, I eat meat, abhor dog fighting, and am comfortable with that hypocrisy,

But all that said--now that we have gorged on disclaimers--I find the reaction to this entire dog fighting case to be a frightening example of the worst kind of group-think: an unreflective mob-mentality run amok. I will not dwell on the various Internet postings that call for Vick to be lynched, beaten, or put in a phone booth with pit bulls. In less than five seconds of mouse-work, you too can buy a "Save a Pit Bull & Neuter Vick" T-shirt. They are easy enough to find since he Internet has always proven comfortable quarters for enterprising bottom feeding parasites.

I will also not harp on the sundry sports columnists using this opportunity to cluck about black athletes, "hip hop gangsta" culture, and what happens when you hold onto your "boyz." I think they speak for themselves. They are as predictable as a setting sun, their arguments and prose so mundane one wonders if they have a computer program where they enter key words like "gangsta", "hip hop", and "boyz" and just watch as the graphs spew themselves.
