Thoughts in February...

February has been an interesting month both in Nigeria and in the Diaspora. In Nigeria, Boko Haram is still at work, The House of Reps gave us all many things to think about and in the US, we continued to watch various events...
Boko Haram
It is gratifying to see that Nigerian security agencies have been able to re-capture Kabir Sokoto. But many have been focused on the reason why he escaped in the first place. However, the crux of this matter really is now that he is back in custody, WHAT NEXT? Will he be charged to court? Will he remain in detention for an indeterminate number of days? Will the security agencies who have done a good job nabbing him, be able to extract useful information from him to help turn the tide against Boko Haram?
Abu Qada also remains in custody and yet to be charged to court. I believe this is quite okay, so long as he is being held and uncharged according to the law and also he is giving the security agencies some useful information.
I will say I am very suspicious of the new acting IGP's directive that nobody should be held for more that 48 hours in detention. Hmmm... Can the Nigerian police really put a case together against a suspect within 48 hours? If a suspect is released on bail can they effectively monitor his movements and prevent him from skipping town?
Ordinarily I would have welcomed that announcement, but in reality, I think there have to be some exceptions to this rule, maybe suspected terrorist attacks should be exempt, kidnappers and armed robbers et al. With Boko Haram still active, you cannot apply the same law to the fellow who stole a bag of rice to a person who threw bombs at churches or kidnapped or killed a person.
SNC
Ironically for those clamoring for an SNC. I hope you all understand how Boko Haram have helped your case. It appears many Nigerians especially the everyday Nigerian, did not understand the need for an SNC or what it even is supposed to be (many still do not). But one thing that Boko Haram has done is to clearly show many Nigerians of all walks of life and all faiths, that, this is NOT what they want Nigeria to become. This has given those in support of an SNC renewed vigor to push their case and actually make this happen.
Having said that, the road to an actual SNC will be a long, narrow and windy road. If there is one thing, I see about this, the dream MUST NOT die no matter how long it takes. Because it is going to take a while in my opinion.
Nigerians have one major flaw that I have observed over the years, we do not like conflict. We would rather make do and suffer through our lives than create conflict that might make our lives better.
I (dis)like the way we borrow from others. In January, we had "Occupy Nigeria" initially it was "Nigeria awakening". But what happened in reality? The country went on National Strike for six days and o pari... end of Occupy, end of Awakening. We were in slumber and snoring,.. we woke up for six days and went to occupy and then we returned to our slumber, sleep and snoring...
Sad but true.
So how do you galvanize the people to maintain support for a proposed SNC? Take a look at the re-run governor elections that have taken place. Look at the turn out. Nothing close to the elections of last year. Why? The people are ALREADY tired. And in many cases disfranchisement and have gone back to their normal suffer suffer.
Mitt Romney,
Finally, I am making what is fast becoming my typical Romney comment. I must say at this point, I am close to becoming an anyone but Romney proponent as well. This man is far to dangerous to become the Republican nominee and the possibility of becoming president. Why? His latest spin on the Auto bail out shows this man has absolutely NO conviction at all. This is a man who will dance kokoma and spin faster than Micheal Jackson just to win votes. This is a con backed by millions of dollars AND the Republican estalishment. This is dangerous. His latest 180 on the auto bail out is astonishing to say the least!

At least with Gingrich and Santorum, you know what you are getting. Newt might be looney enough to want to a colony on the moon, but he sticks to his convictions. Rickky boy freaks me out if he should win, (I might pack back to Naija based on my wife's complaints and urging... pssst...she is a blue dog democrat...) but you know for sure where he stands on practically all things... Mitt??? he reminds me of IBB, who it was said, when he tells you good morning, it was in your best intrest to peek out the window to indeed confirm what time it actually was...
Hey Mitt,
This one is for you!
My weekend lesson from Abami Eda...
Enjoy your week people!
