A long ramble about wrestling with chi on a full stomach and not giving enough credit to his predecessor, a self-admitted fraud who was in bed with hooligans to control the state, is not reason enough for an impachment. Mr. Nworah may be absolutely right about the evils of Mr. Obi's short-lived administration, but the fact remains that he is the democratically-elected governor of Anambra State and his impeachment appears to be illegal. Who cares what we think of the Ladojas, Fayoses, and even the Dariyes--due process should be followed, otherwise we should forget about elections and return to the more straight-forward days of military rule. Let's not be so facile.

Obi forgot he was amidst a majority party that never wanted him there in the first place. And then he proceeded to make mistakes that he should not have made considering a person in his position. He forgot that a deal made with Obasanjo to aid him oust Ngige will be the same deal that will return to become his poison’.

Uche Nworah writes:

In the end Peter Obi couldn’t save himself from the inevitable, it was always going to be difficult for him to survive in a state populated by opposition party members in the legislative chambers. Jideofor Adibe’s argument in the essay Does Peter Obi Really Deserve Our Sympathy places the Peter Obi saga into perspective. I personally do not subscribe to the sentimental argument that Anambra people would be worst off from whatever is going on at the moment. Peter Obi had the opportunity to disprove cynics but his slow start after being sworn-in reduces further any sympathy votes he may have won from Anambra people, who having not tasted development in over a decade got a feel of what that word actually means in the days of Chris Ngige.
Responding to the referenced essay above, written by Adibe, I had this to express:

Whether deliberately, or inadvertently, you've sought to show the Anambra problem as a Peter Obi problem. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Anambra crises is simply a reflection of the primitive politics being practised in Nigeria, now brought to the fore, by the fact that Peter Obi is surrounded and out-flanked by the PDP-dominated House of Assembly.
My view point equally applies to this particular essay, and I still stand by it.

Furthermore, how come that it has not occured to those purporting to cry more than the bereaved, that the recent so-called "impeachment" of Obi is a farce and a nullity, under the law? For goodness sakes, the impeachment panel sworn in by the state's CJ is still sitting. In fact, they adjourned sitting to November 6. Why could'nt the legislators wait until the conclusion of the panel's sitting? Why the rush to commit a blatant illegality?

Mark you, Anambra is for all Anambrarians, not just the 'honourable' assemblymen and their apologists. We can wax lyrical about the alleged inabilty of Obi to dance the requisite political dance, but that does not detract from the fact that what the Anambra House of Assembly has embarked upon is hugely unpopular and blatantly illegal!

Obi is not a politician, so what is the problem?? Does anyone honestly believe what we lack in Nigeria is more politicians?? I think it is either a sign of confusion or a sign of intellectual dishonesty when serious people pretend that what just happened in Anambra has anything to do with Peter Obi's political naivete. I think it is really unfortunate when people who ought to know better are instead uncritically buying the nonsense being shoveled out buy the PDP propaganda machine. PDP propaganda had been marshaled, manned by operatives both inside and outside Nigeria, for at least 6 months laying the groundwork for this eventuality.

You think they wont impeach Etiaba if she accepts this greek gift the state assembly is handing her? People should get serious, I spoke to at least 10 of the reps in Asaba, this whole thing is about money. It is still about money and that's why Etiaba should not accept this gift. She at least had Obi, now she will be the single APGA office holder, surrounded by these PDP vultures, probably forced to appoint a PDP deputy. Peter Obi and Etiaba may be neophytes as some suggest but I think even a two year old can read this play.

Balonwu should take the Governorship. That way he can throw open the treasury and we'll see how fast he can "start developing Anambra". Of course if he starts slow, he should also be impeached? This is silly. He thinks Chris Ubah will not raise the rent? this is silly.

All the experienced politicians in Anambra and yet Peter Obi won the 2003 elections? We should stop deceiving ourselves.

This write up seems to be the hand work of a political hatchet man. It is a pity that Nigeria has indeed descended to this level of abyss if not what political strategy have enable unimpeached governors and presidents to survive? I have always opposed any kind of impeachment as a means of governance because I believe that the will of teh people in a free and fair elections is supreme.
Anambrarians should allow peace to reign for the sake of the development of the long battered state.

@Uche Nworah,

In a pained submission, Cyril Anunobi, author of Nri Warriors of Peace says that ‘what is happening in Anambra state is really painful because Anambra State is supposed to be the 'Home for all People' especially for all Igbo people. Anambra cannot be a home for all people if our home is always on fire’. Continuing he says that ‘enemies of Ndigbo know that we are always at the fore front of Igbo nationality (you can call it the cradle of Igbo culture), Ojukwu, Ekwueme, Zik, Igwe Osita Agwuna, Emeka Anyoku, Chinua Achebe, Oyibo Odinammadu and many other pillars of Igbo nationality are all from Anambra State . No Other Igbo State have this many collection of Igbo Pillars. Concluding, he warns that ‘what is going on in Anambra State will never stop as long as our haters can buy our brothers and sisters and use them against us’.
.................................................. .................................................. ..............................

Statements like this are the root of many problems. Among the first 5 greatest Igbos, you must count Michael Okpara and Akanu Ibiam. These are not Anambrarians.

But, tribal sentiments suspended for a while, Anambra may have produced such so-called Igbo greats. They have nonetheless, also produced almost all the Igbo villains you can think of. Abi make I name them? The only non-Anambra Igbo villain I can easily remember is Arthur Nzeribe and perhaps Iwuanyanwu (depending on what you think of him).

Anambra can never be the shame of entire Igbo because there are four other Igbo states, not to talk of the Igbo in Delta and Rivers. How on earth can one be greater than four? This is simply, plain stupid. Anambrarians should solve their problem and not ''smartly'' lump it on other Igbos. Please.

Uche Nworah is increasingly becoming inconsistent in his take on issues and if this is your way of exhibiting the basic quality of being chameleonic as the art of politics demands,it is a failed start.(Check your comments on OBI's LONDON visit and compare it with this essay)
Everybody in this square knows that Peter Obi got kicked out becuase he is not PDP: PERIOD.The illegal impeachment also featured common knowledge that our politics would continue to be furnished with rascals who would want it their way only.Anambra just lost a visionary governor whom they actually voted for.He won the 2003 election.
There are better ways to wish to join Andy Uba's campaign team so stop sneaking it on us.He is still Chris Uba's blood brother so "ife na ebe kana ebekwa"

@ Uche Nworah

At this point, you are clearly becoming a liability to the Pat Utomi campaign. It apears you want to exceed Elendu in the spinmeister business.

Look, Obi may be a political neophyte and a container importer etc, etc but the courts declared him the lawful winner of the elections. Any one who seeks to become governor of Anambra state should follow due process and wait until February 2007. I suggest you advise your new paymasters that the Anambra people are fed up with the political expediency that landed Mbadinuju and Ngige on them and would like a small dose of due process and legality - things which they have not experienced since 1979.

@emj,

Few Anambra people who live in Lagos have any illusions about Peter Obi. But on a scale of infamy, I still rate him above the Uba brothers. I'd rather be governed by Peter Obi than Andy Uba. If you think Obi is shady, Uba is Hitler and Attila the Hun combined.

Etiaba becomes first female Governor in Nigeria

November 3, 2006
Nanka.Org

With the News of Governor Peter Obi’s impeachment on the morning of
November 2, 2006 along with the written instruction to the Chief Judge to
swear in the current deputy governor - Etiaba as the replacement governor,
the reactions quickly grew cautiously mixed. In particular, the Etiaba, the
deputy governor made publicly pronounced not wanting to be sworn-in as
the governor of the State while emphasizing that Gov. Peter Obi still
remains her boss.

However the solidarity visit to Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu by the duo of Peter
Obi and Dame Etiaba moments following the News of the impeachment led
to a change of heart. This is according to reports on the ground. Nanka.Org
learnt that Chief Ojukwu made Etiaba to understand that if she refuses to
accept the position of Governor that the FG will react quickly to swear in the
current Speaker of the House and that will not be a better option. Chief
Ojukwu was able to persuade Etiaba to proceed to accept the office of
governorship.

With this, Etiaba was sworn in at about 10am on Friday morning in Awka by
the Chief Judge, making her the first female governor in Nigeria. Following
her searing in, she headed to the governor's office to resume duties.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has taken to the airwaves {Radio & TV} to announce
that he still remains the governor, that he does not recognize the purported
impeachment.

In a related development, the motives of the FG for not withdrawing the
Police protection given to Peter Obi are beginning to raise some concerns in
some quarters in Awka as to whether the FG wants to incite violence. This
is because typically, after an impeachment, the impeached individual is
automatically kept under house arrest to alleviate any dubious retaliatory
moves. It is done to watch the impeached individual. The FG's refusal to
withdraw the police protection or place Peter Obi under house arrest
indicates that they intend on creating a situation similar to Ekiti where they
can have the liberty to declare Anambra State - A State of Emergency

As more details become available, Nanka.Org will bring them to you. Stay
tuned

Well said!

Let me add to those comments by reiterating a criticism I had earlier made regarding a similar illegality, namely, the unconstitutional removal of the Ekiti governor. In the Ekiti debacle, instead of calling a spade a spade and condemning in no uncertain terms the coup d'état there, so-called human rights/pro-democracy activists like Gani Fawehinmi preferred to play petty politics. All of a sudden, cherished principles gave way to political expediency and self-serving justifications of the worst hue. This kind of pitiful display of inconsistency and hypocrisy couched in convoluted logic has offered dubious comfort or legitimacy to the illegalities one is witnessing today in Anambra, Ekiti, Plateau and elsewhere.

Now, the article by Uche Nworah seems not to have addressed the substance of the questionable process of destitution employed by a faction of the Anambra state legislature. Worse, the author appears to provide a convenient alibi for the legislative rascality that has taken place in Anambra by blaming it all on the mythical inexperience or naiveté of Governor Obi as well as the latter's alleged mishandling of the Ngige legacy.

And as if to compound matters, in the article in question, the picture that comes across is one of utter helplessness on the part of the Anambra people in the face of marauding and malefic influences as represented by the Ubah clan and their chief ally, the Butcher of Aso Rock (BOAR).

Surely, the people of Anambra cannot be said to be helpless. They, in the first instance, did elect Peter Obi as their governor. Those who, perhaps inadvertently, are preaching a defeatist kind of acquiescence in the face of thuggery and usurpation should provide rational, that is to say legitimate reasons as to why Anambrarians and Nigerians in general should not use every means at their disposal to oppose the gale of unconscionable impositions taking place in the country today.

Uche Nworah wrote that "Peter Obi behaved like the proverbial lizard who after overdosing on a meal of pounded yam and egusi soup challenged his chi to a wrestling contest." For the sake of our children and foreigners, let us get this proverb right. It was Nza, the wren, a tiny bird, that fed well and then challenged his personal spirit (chi) to a wrestling match. The reason a tiny bird is featured in the Igbo proverb is obvious...

Last May, in your article titled "Who is Afraid of Paul Adujie" you also butchered another proverb when you wrote that "Igbo proverb which says that whoever likes eating frog should go for the king frog, so that when called a frog eater or accused of frog eating, the person would proudly nod..." The proper character in that proverb is toad, not frog. Frog is good food but toad is not, which is why a toad (awo) is used for the proverb.

By the way, as to the rest of your article, I disagree that Peter Obi is the problem. Anambra State appears to still be in infancy and still suffers from teething problems...
