| Yoruba Gang Busted? Yoruba Gang Busted? By Paul I. Adujie Lawcareer2007@aol.com New York, United States There appear to be a new level of hostilities against Nigerians and Nigeria by Nigerians. It is rapidly coming to its unpalatable climax, but, so far, at least, effects are limited to the cyber warriors, a facet of this cyber warfare has crescendo into an American court room. Nigerians at home and abroad, who frequent the world wide web of the internet and particularly, Nigeria related websites, must have come across the controversies involving Madueke, Rotimi, Ugwuonye, Aluko in the preceding couple of months. The former Nigerian ambassador to the United States was removed. Removed, after what was said to be statements he allegedly made or which were attributed to him. Statements which were reported to be disparaging of a whole group of Nigerians; But some Nigerians suspected political or ot... Oga Paul
90% of the Nigerians who are ferociously protective, defensive, and loyal to their ethnic groups are 40 years and older. If you check the Nigerian Internet websites they are the age group engaged in ethnic rancor. There is a good explanation for their state of mind. They are the ones who witnessed tribal schisms through the Nigerian civil war. In that war that generation found protection and peace only among their own ethnic groups. You can't blame them completely because their experiences are not the same with the younger generation. You can't raise children under wars and tribal bigotry and expect them to think otherwise. College education is not going to wipe out their experiences and images of ethnic hatred and war.
With time, and the passage of that generation, a generation that sees itself as true Nigerians will emerge.

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? interesting article with challenging points. i appreciate.
also agree with first comment about the preponderance of ethnic bigotry among d older generation.
could this mean that introduction of FEDERAL CHARACTER probably is working to some extent?

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? Sir,
The article is an intelligent, lucid and well thought out commentary to ethnic bashing in Nigeria and among Nigerians, but I have to be honest with you.
It will be naive and inept not to highlight those parts of the Nigerian cancer that eats at the soul of every single Nigerian anywhere in the world. Let it be known that every single Nigerian is not responsible for the negativity that beclouds us all.
There is a cancer at the fore of our problems, that cancer comes from some Nigerians, government, politicians, some ethnic groups and some criminals.
The problem of Nigeria is fear, laziness, lack of honesty and political correctness has ensured we continue to put up with the same issues from nearly 5 decades when these matters could have been identified to certain persons and institutions; name them, shame them and then proceed to cut that cancer out.
What I am trying to say is that in the US for example, the mostly likely drive by shooter is an African American but when the crime is reported it is called a black crime (that is any black person from France to Timbuktu), whereas if it had been a white crime the western media might call it the Detroit motorbike gang or white trailer park trash from West Virginia.
Nigeria is being placed in the list of terrorist countries (axis of evil) because the Northern part of Nigerian(our Muslim brothers) have decided to behave like some middle eastern terrorists who they have more ties to than the southern part of Nigerian.
So, should we keep quiet and not name this as a northern muslim problem and then proceed to deal with it using local and international support because we want to be politically correct?
I have just returned from a holiday to Thailand where quite a number of Nigerians of the Igbo ethnicity who want to get rich quick and make name in their villages using drugs money, have been incarcerated indefinitely while some are awaiting death sentences. Now, should we highlight the fact that these men are igbos mainly? If we do highlight it without raising ethnic sentiments could we then perhaps use such a highlight to address the issue among igbos leaders and among the community?
There is in the Huston area and other parts of the US, and from what I saw in the United Kingdom most Nigerian frausdsters have some sort of Yoruba or Benin name, it is not co-incidence that credit card and bank fraud is persisitent among the South western Nigerian population, perhaps we should keep quiet and call it a black or Nigerian crime rather than reach out to our brothers of that extraction on how we can change the mentality.
I think we all get the message here; I am not going to be quiet with any issues so as to be politically correct. Most Paedophiles and serial killers are white caucasian males, many muggers are western born blacks, many 419 persons are nigerians from the south and the likely Islamic terrorist in Nigeria is a hausa/fulani muslim.
We cannot resolve these issues if we keep our mouths shut all in name of ethnicity. That is why Nigeria is having problems moving forward!

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? A very good article. I have always said and will keep saying it. NIGERIA NEEDS TO HAVE TRUE RECONCILIATION and then maybe we might start seeing a difference. I know there was an attempt at the OPUTA PANEL, but lets be honest did the participants take it serioulsy or genuinely want reconciliation on their part.
My parents and many others of their generation of different tribes I have had talks with, told me that before the civil war and pre and post independence whilst most people where proud of their ethnic origin it was not really an issue. Granted some people had strong feelings about who they will marry based on having similar culture and more importantly language. But by inlarge it was not cast in stone more like a preference. Former head of state Gowon implemented the NYSC programme which whilst I was not fortunate to take up might have gone some way in helping the ONE NIGERIANESS!!!!
I dont think tribalism is limited to 40+ or any age group. By nature if your that way inclined or brought up that way you will most likely make it a generation trait.
To be honest,my only prejudice is that I want and desire an Anioma state, keep the Igbo language and preferably if I decide one day my batchelor
career should end marry someone that speaks the same language. But the latter is not cast in stone because I could well meet a woman who captures my heart who is Yoruba,Bini, Hausa,Urhobo,Tiv...etc. So long as she is Nigerian.I will defend my ethnic group if I feel its being attacked unjustified by another ethnic group, but I am more likely to defend in a more aggressive manner when an outsider attacks Nigeria. Take for instance Awolowo, I am not happy with his civil war stance and his tribalistic politics, but that does not mean I will now look at every Yoruba person and think..."they must have Awolowo's mindset". I look at the individual. The Hausa's are the same, I often think they have ruined Nigeria as leaders abeit with help from Southern collaborators, but again I have to judge each Hausa person on my personal dealings with them. The same for all other ethnic groups in Nigeria. For Igbos, I have met some that are too arrogant, want power at any cost and worship money. Take Azikiwe for instance after the political wranglings in the old western Nigeria, in the East he played politics in removing an Efik man ( his name escapes me now ) from a post he was very competent at do get one of his own kinsmen in there. None of us is without sin or bad deeds, but the point I am trying to make is that we must look at each other on an individual basis. It may sound naive and impossible, but it is wel within our means. I cannot explain it, but OUR DIVERSITY COULD ONE DAY BE OUR STRENGHT is a feeling I have. My parents often tell me there must be a reason why Nigeria has had a few chances to breakup and still stays together. Maybe its God's will who knows. As for the Nigerians who love to bash Nigeria, well its their right and good luck to them and I hope they get maximum satisfaction from their misguided negativity, because no matter which country they hold citizenship, THEY ARE STILL A PRODUCT OF NIGERIA. A GOOD NIGERIA OR BAD NIGERIA IS A COLLECTIVE REFLECTION OF ALL NIGERIANS IN NIGERIA AND ABROAD.
I REMAIN OPTIMISTIC ABOUT NIGERIA, AND FELLOW NIGERIANS THAT DONT SHARE THIS VIEW, WHILST I MAY BE ANGRY WITH YOU, THE ANGER IS BORN OUT OF LOVE FOR YOU AND THE COLLECTIVE AWESOME POWER WE POSSESS AS A NATION IF ENHANCED PROPERLY.

Anioma777,
I think you have captured the essence of the the author has been saying all along. It feels good reading your statements of fact. We are all a product of Nigeria. Some of us may have a white mother and a Nigerian father or a Nigerian mother and a white father or better still both parents Nigerian; rich or poor, living abroad or in Nigeria, collectively we are all still a product of Nigeria.

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? These same persons would not spare a zilch percent of their vermillion flares of vigorous defense energy to defend Nigeria! This, in plain talk, means that, the ethnic and tribal bigots would manufacture phantasmagoric defenses of their group, even if accused of indefensible acts. Whereas, these ostensible logicians, are unable, unwilling and will refuse to murmur or muster any effort in defense, of Nigeria and or Nigerians are accused rightly or wrongly.
This is why a lot of people including me, do not believe in the country called NIGERIA - I will not defend it from those that want to pull it down.
One Nigeria is not a worthy project in light of what it has done to the tribes, by grouping everyone together and setting a trap of enslavement.
You have to look deeper in order to conclusively determine that Nigeria is a terrorist nation, a no-man’s land, and a mere geographical landmark in Africa.
It is a poacher’s heaven by Oil thieves, Arabs, Indians, and Chinese.
Nigeria was used and abandoned by Europeans, Japan, and Russia.

Eire,
This book "Terrorism – A Global Scourge by Eluma Ikemefuna Sylas" does not at any time implicate the Sultan or Emirs of Northen Nigerian extract. What it did do was an analysis of global terrorism and how it could possibly happened in Nigerian because of some Islamic fanatics.
And THE 'TALIBANS' OF NORTHERN NIGERIA is a write up by
Samuel Bayo Arowolaju
Try not to assign blame where some of these authors have not. We should all take a listen to what Tujie has writen and not be blinded by our own idiosyncrasies. No one is too young or too old to learn or change.
I have yet to see where it is said that Nigeria placed as a Terrorist nation.

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? Those who tribalise petty crimes by ordinary nigerians (as against the monumental continuing looting of trillions by Nigerian leaders) who are themselves mainly victims of decades of misrule by kleptomaniac nigerian leaders are the biggest cowards and hypocrites on the face of the earth.
Nigerians of all tribes are ordinarily and in the main, a very resourceful, enterprising, creative and dogged people. The vices being committed by Nigerians is largely a reflection of the wider, failed Nigerian leadership and society where most values have been lost and where wicked criminal leaders have looted the nation blind and fostered unbelievable penury and poverty.
The solution is not and can never be found in engaging others in internet war or tribalising social problems, for which we know the causes are in the main Nigerian leadership, nor to imitate racist profiling in America. The solution is to tackle the root causes of poverty and unemployment by deposing the thieving leaders and to aggressively re-cultivate our value systems.
Had Nigeria been a nation blessed with good leaders, who worked hard to develop the nation with the abundant material and human resources, creating overwhelming prosperity, employment and opportunities, together with a strict maintenance of the value systems, Nigeria and Nigerians would no doubt have been very different today.
Unfortunately nigerian leaders are the biggest thieving criminals in the world, who have robbed everything in sight and reduced the nation to a lawless, dysfunctional, poverty stricken jungle. It is from such a failed state that the desperate nigerians who involve in all kinds of vices have emerged.
The stark reality is that in nigeria, the president is a thief, the governors are thieves, the ministers are thieves, the senators are thieves, members of the house of the reps are thieves, permanent secretaries are thieves, local government chairmen are thieves, councillors are thieves, commissioners are thieves, civil servants are thieves, judges are thieves, the customs are thieves, the police are thieves, the army are thieves etc etc etc the list can go on and on, to make matters worse, all these looters are walking free, and given chieftaincy titles and referred to as "your excellency" and worshipped by nigerians. Not only do they rob our money and deprive us of everything, they also rob our votes. The reality therefore is that nigeria is a nation led by criminals, where crime pays, and where you can hardly get anything legitimately. Not even elections can you contest and win legitimately, you must rig it or rob the votes to win. The supreme court, even went ahead to legitimize a criminality such as the Yar,Adua election described and acknowledged by the whole wide world as the worst rigged election in the world.
Under this circumstances, how can we expect nigerians to be substantially any different when they come from a nation where even the leaders thrive on crime? Are human beings not supposed to be products of their environment?
I consider those nigerians who engage in internet jingoism as hypocrites, because as things stand today, there is hardly any saints left in nigeria. The nigerian society has been so corrupted by decades of misrule that there is now hardly any nigerian who can enter paradise if God came down today.
Internet tribal warriors are also plain cowards. Cowards because as much as they have been deprived, enslaved, impoverished and destroyed by criminal leaders from the local governments, to Aso rock, none of them have been able to raise a finger against the misruling robbers who have deprived them of everything, even in the form of peaceful protests, yet they have the time to engage in cowardly internet tribalism with anonymous names. No sane person should take such, cowardly internet urchins serious.
It makes no sense, wasting precious time in ignorant tribalism amongst ordinary nigerians, while the looting criminal leaders who are the real causes of the problems are getting away with their loot, Nigerians should unite and campaign-sponsor a revolution to capture or kill and overthrow the monumentally corrupt criminal regime of robbers and election riggers for good. This is the only real solution.
Come to think of it, isnt it high time a death sentence for corruption is introduced in nigeria as is the case in China and other Asian countries?

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? I can very well undertand this article writers plea for patriotism among Nigerians, espacially regarding our stance on certain sensitive ethnic related issues.
Yes, there is still ever present strong sentiments among Nigerians on those sensitive tribal and ethnic issues.
Nigeria, I believe is a nation that will never appreciate her human and natural resources until a happy divorce is declared among her citizens.
Why are other smaller easier to manage countries who are lesser densely populated, an example Ghana, have no qualms with patriotism or those issues this article writer is complaining about?
I have travelled to and lived in several countries around the world and lived in and visited many Nigerian cities, and can surely tell you that Nigerians have enough reasons for mutual mistrust and suspicion. We are not our brothers keepers and still have a very long way to go.
God help us.

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? THE ALIENATING STATE
Nice article, Paul! Long time!
I just hope that Madam Propaganda, that is Mrs. Akunyili, will not misconstrue the thrust of your contribution and try to use it for her re-branding boondoggle.
An attempt to understand the attitudes of Nigerians regarding their ethnic groups as well as members of other groups, not to mention their attitudes toward the Nigerian nation, must of necessity look at the conduct of the Nigerian state and especially the quality (or lack of it) of the nation's so-called political leadership at all levels. For more than four decades, the largely irresponsible and criminal behavior of the political elite, both at the centre and at the periphery, has had the debilitating consequence of perpetuating the alienation of the citizenry. In such a dismal context, the absence of allegiance on the part of citizens to the Nigerian state has often coincided with dubious or mythical loyalties to primordial constructs of tribe or religion. I employ the phrase "mythical loyalties" advisedly in the understanding that a worrisome societal dislocation is evident in much of present day Nigeria and no community seems immuned to its ravages. This leads us to the next critical point - the state of anomie plaguing the land.
The near-total break down of values as is the case in our dear Naija nowadays has meant that there rarely exist any countervailing influences actively working for the cause of shared values like national unity and a sense of community. We are faced with the stark and sordid reality of the Hobbesian jungle where life is nasty, short and brutish. Welcome to the country of Ali Baba, a.k.a. Obasanjo, the Thief of Minna and Umoru! A land where the PDP holds sway! Where criminals have taken over and their impunity is a primary source of corrupting and anti-social conduct. A place swarming with poltroons (and opportunists) masquerading as pro-democracy activists!
Only a conscious collective effort will help reclaim Nigeria from the vermin holding it hostage.

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? Great write up.
It is normal to have pride in your ethnic identity, it is natural to be proud of who you are. It is however unacceptable to castigate another ethnic group when your own backyard stinks to high heavens.
I was raised to love all people and in my work and play I have interacted, become acquainted and dated other ethnic groups in Nigeria.
But let me tell you a little about my experiences on 2 Nigerian websites.
I joined a Nigerian website of mostly people in their 20's and 30's and all I heard was Igbo 419 ,Igbo women are hairy, Igbos are cheats,Igbos are drop outs, Igbos are the worst things in Nigeria, Igbos are flesh eaters, Igbo men are armed robbers and drug dealers giving Nigeria a bad name, Igbos are ritualists, Igbos cannot be trusted and sadly all the accusations almost always came from Yorubas and some Ijaws.
There are countless threads on Okija and a certain Clifford Orji as evidence when there's enough news to crash this website on the same exact things from people of other ethnicities. Many are not even aware that the flesh eating Clifford Orji had a Yoruba accomplice whose name was lost in most of the write ups while he was simply labelled an accomplice.
Every thread with anything Igbo in it becomes an opportunity for these vermins to spew their usual Igbophobia.
I was encouraged by another villager to come to NVS which she described as a more mature site and to my dismay, the fathers of the individuals I met at the other place were here carrying on with the same thing. I have consistently asked these bigots to name one single crime prevalent in any ethnic group and unheard of in their group and up till today none of them have met that challenge.
Here in this village there are several threads about the Ekiti voting saga, Ogun Politics, Oduduwa this and that etc,It doesn't make sense for any person outside of that group to make silly comments in those threads about Yorubas in general the same way it would make absolutely no sense for a Yoruba person to come into a thread about the sorry sight of Enugu airport or rubbish dump at Aba and talk rubbish about Igbos when the same areas in his own domain are no different perhaps even worse. That saying that once a lie is repeated several times it takes over as the truth couldn't be more correct speaking from my experiences in these places.
I have consisently spent my time trying to debunk all these theories that these individuals have formluated in their sick minds about Igbos.
1. Flesh eaters--- I have produced countless stories of similar things in Western Nigeria including a man who used his neighbour's intestines for peppersoup.
There was an accusation of Ngwa people eating a group of youth corpers and I challenged anyone to produce that story in print, they couldn't.
2.Rituals---I have given countless examples on the same stories in Western Nigeria
3.Otokoto---the same house of horror was discovered in Ife with many others and a human parts market in Jankara market and several other stories around Nigeria.
4.Igbos are drop outs---I have produced WAEC and JAMB results to show that the SE and SS lead the rest of Nigeria both in number of applicants and no of entrants into all institutions of higher learning.
4. 419--there are countless evidence with video clips of the twerps who were obviously non Igbo
5. Igbos cannot be trusted---yet the other 2 ethnic groups have ruled Nigeria all these years and we all see where we are today.
6. Igbos like money a lot--and I asked who doesn't like money?
7.Igbos are backward--I have produced evidence that the SE has the lowest poverty index in Nigeria
The most ridiculous was
8. Igbos have no culture and I read that from countless Yorubas and I asked them to tell me what Igbankwu, Ekpe, Okokonko, Mmanwu, Egwu of all types, ikuputa nwa, Iri ji , Iwa oji, Iwa akwa,Iru mgbede and several others are if not culture. Someone may ask why lateesha takes time to answer these folks rather than ignore them and the answer is simple.
This is the internet.I do it because others are reading, I do it because I have Igbo children .I do it because I'm a proud Igbo woman.
It has also worked to a large extent.Facts cannot be denied and those who parrot these untruths are forced to come up with other lies when their original lies are debunked.
And as usual I would want to always add that my opinions about these tribalists are directed to them and anyone like them not to Yorubas as a group of people.

Only a conscious collective effort will help reclaim Nigeria from the vermin holding it hostage.
Nigeria has continued to corrupt and disgrace the customs & attributes of all the ethnic tribes. Past Military governments were engaged in deposing Emirs, Kings, Obas, Ezes, and Princes from their kingdoms for frivolous reasons. There is no longer a strong traceable validity to our ethnic Kingdoms and Royalties. Chiefs are forced to bow down to Local Government Chairmen and Governors, if they intend to hang on to their thrones. They are called for meetings once in a while just to be arm twisted into giving unnecessary loyalty to governments. How can we reconcile the rape, plunder, and trashing that has taken place? How do we find love for Nigeria after these long years of vagabondage? After we reclaim our nation, what will it be called/named? __________________ The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress -- Joseph Joubert

| Re: Yoruba Gang Busted? @ the poster, the last time I checked, every political appointment, elections, allocations, school admissons even the members at the national football team and similar decisions are based on ethnicity and quota. Nothing in Nigeria is by merit.
It started that way and has worsened over the years with the 6 geo political zones aimed at favouring the Muslim North over the Majority Christian South. For starters, why would pipes be laid from Rivers state to build a refinery in Kaduna ?
does that make any sense? If oil were struck in Kotangora,do you think there would have been a refinery built at Obosi or Ibusa? Until the day a president can be elected based on his abilities to deliver rather than his party or tribe, I'll take the country seriously.
We currently have a president that was not elected by anyone who has sworn to die in office rather than leave to care care of himself.
OBJ may have been a failure but at least he tried.
We heard his voice and saw his gra gra.
The one we have now is there because he's a northerner and the " wners of Nigeria" wanted him there.
He seems to be clueless as to which way to go.
From what we all see today, Fashola seems to be the man destined to dig Nigeria out of it's present pits,he has been impressive in Lagos state.
Pat Utomi is the other reputable Nigerian with clean hands and a zeal to serve but what do the "owners of Nigeria" think?
Your guess is as good as mine.
