I saw this picture of Majek Fashek this morning and I could not believe my eyes!

http://www.365nigeria.com/wp-content/themes/gadgetine/scripts/timthumb.php?src=wp-content/uploads/2012/02/majek11.jpg&w=350&h=200&zc=1&q=100

So I have been reading up on him and what he's been up to:

By Ogbonna Amadi, Entertainment Editor

...Although he assured this reporter he was ready to re-launch his career which took a nose dive because of his alleged addiction to booze and drugs, he sounded a bit incoherent over the phone. Rasta Black Rice who also added his voice to the conversation assured that Majek was okay and ready for his rebirth and relaunch. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/12/majek-fashek-returns/

and watched his new video and heard his voice...

UNBELIEVABLE!

Say no to drugs, folks.

PS- The song is nice and he still has some talent but...

What a difference? He was really good looking back in the day. He doesn't even look like the same person. Lord have mercy.

I cannot believe it is the same bloke, Oga ju !! Drugs really have wrecked his physical appearance, however he still has a good singing voice even though he looks spaced out most of the time in the video. I hope he keeps clean and stays off both the booze and the drugs.

As much as I enjoyed the music,

I couldn't get over today's appearance of a once-handsome singer.

Even his enunciation is no more like before, as he kept saying "jdaz jdrue"

Someone who had a cheeky chubbiness to his appearance is now bone-dry.

Still, good for him as he tries to rehabilitate himself; I hope he stays on course.

He actually made it on to Letterman at some point in the past.

Watch as Letterman introduces him here (http://youtu.be/QfAJ5k8b8K8) and as he performs on the show here (http://youtu.be/sFQIwqxP_Xk).

I love as he improvises with the incorporation of the talking drum into his reggae.

Arise from your sleep Africa
Arise from your sleep America

There's work to be done Africa
There's work to be done America

if we unite, we will be free so long, for too long
so long, for too long

we've been sitting down for so oooo long
we've been fooling round for too oooo long
we've been sitting down for so oooo long

so long, so long
for too long, for too long

Oh Lord, can you hear me now
Oh Lord

Remember, remember, long long time ago
when we used to live like prince and princess

Remember, remember, the pyramids of Egypt
when we used to live like prince and princess

Remember, remember, Marcus Garvey
Who had a dream for you Africa

Remember, remember, Martin Luther King
Who had a dream for you America

They say you are black, they say you are brown
They say dem white, they say you are brown

But only the Angels of God is white
But only the Angels of God is white

so long, so long
for too long, for too long
we've been sitting down for so oooo long
we've been fooling round for too oooo long

Arise from your sleep Africa
Arise from your sleep America

There's work to be done Africa
There's work to be done America

if we unite, we will be free so long, for too long
so long, for too long

Remember, remember, Marcus Garvey
Who had a dream for you Africa

Remember, remember, Martin Luther King
Who had a dream for you America

Remember, remember, King Selassie
Who was betrayed by his people

Remember, remember, Lord Jesus Christ
Who died for you and I for salvation

They say you are black,[do you believe?]
they say you are brown [do you believe?]

But only the Angels of God is white
But only the Angels of Jah is white

we've been sitting down for so oooo long
we've been fooling round for too oooo long

so long, so long
for too long, for too long

so long, so long
for too long, for too long

Very sad to see him looking this way.
How people change over time.
Looking extremely handsome, Majek was one of the few Nigerian musicians in the early eighties who would not touch a stick of cigarette.
From a very humble beginning, I came to know this guy through a chance meeting at Tabansi Records, Oregun, Ikeja in late 1982.
A struggling artist then, Majek juggled btw playing at the Shrine and the churches around Ikeja.
With the help of a cousin of mine, Rick Gold, who was then the Artists and Repertoire Manager at Tabansi Records, I facilitated his joining of Tabansi Records' A&R team in 1983. This afforded him the opportunity to devote more time on his personal songs. The result was "Send Down The Rain" in 1985/86.
He's got a wonderful sister married to a Naval Officer at Apapa at the time...wondering how the lady would feel seeing this disturbing photo.

This one is beyond clean up.

The type of damage (physical) here is beyond repair. He seems like the cleanest clean that he can ever be now.
You can see his motor neurone system is affected and badly damaged, hence the slurred speech and poor coordination.

Sorry sight indeed !
I hope he has a dependable friends / family to look after him for the remaining of his days.

You know if this guy stayed back in Nigeria,he might not have turned out this way
How does one go from a mega star in his homeland to a wretched miserable drunk in the USA
look at Charlie boy Oputa who is a mover and shaker in Nigerian entertainment industry today, who can remember any of Charlie boy's songs? But he stayed in Nigeria and became an icon of some sort.
Perhaps it was the initial culture shock when one moves here and he couldn't handle the down times of attempting to break into the music industry here.
I dunno
He had everything going for him
he was charismatic, very handsome,a great singer
what went wrong?
You can't imagine how sad that picture made me feel.
This man would have easily filled the shoes of people like Fela and Miriam Makeba
he was in that league
very sad

Kai!! He had some SERIOUS talent. I am sad like I am mourning a loss, to be honest. This is incredibly sad for me to see someone so full of promise just unravel before my eyes like this. I am comparing voices in this song and his new song and I don't know who that person is in the new song.

Chasing the American dream...it is not the faint of heart and that New York is a different kind of jungle on it's own. At the end, he takes ownership for his successes/failures. He has no one to blame but himself cos others like him made it or did not resort to drug abuse when they could not make it.

I remember that his song ''Majek Fashek is in New York'' when he left Naija. I could not find it on youtube for some reason. He was so full of promise and hope then and now...

If anybody that knows him is reading this. Family, friends whatever...please get him some help. He still has a chance in recovery and to live a full, sober, healthy and happy life.

Looks like you really like reggae, Anwulika.

Yeah he's talented, but if you don't have an appreciation for reggae, you can't feel his latent.

Still, I actually thought he was enroute recovery, hence his new releases and stuff - anybody know?

Yes, Auspy. I love reggae. All genres of music, actually...well, except heavy metal.

No be so dem they do recovery, Auspy. He needs to be in a 10 step (abi na 12 step) program PRONTO!!

Not touring all over the place with probably the same triggers and enablers around him.

I am having mixed feelings about buying his new album (if there is one. I have not checked) cos I don't know if my money will be supporting the habit further.

@ Obi,

Many thanks for being part of the discovery and enhancement story of Majek's talent.
I hope he finds his way to detach from the personal drug demons that have taken hold of his soul.
