*ahem*

Madam,
nice work so far, please keep the fire burning.

I would suggest however that the thread be given more prominence (we obvioulsy would need the help of Big-K et al).

Ideally it should feature on the Home Page (in an article format preferably) and/or as a pinned thread.

That way more people get to see it and comment on it.

All in all, nice work.

Regards.

ENERGY TAKES THE LEAD

Here is a preview of a current project on the energy sector in Nigeria. 1n 1996-97, I was in Jigawa for a couple of months, it wasn't easy and I must say I am really glad to read this new development.

"This project has introduced home lighting systems to each village. Compared to the kerosene lights that they replace, solar lighting offers a better light without the inherent fumes and fire danger of the old lamps. System users report that it is now easier for children to do their studies and home businesses are thriving under the better lighting conditions. And of course, families appreciate going about their normal activities with good lighting. With about 20 systems in each village, we have created demand and a great deal of interest in home systems. JAEF will be able to continue electrifying houses using a micro-credit scheme where the payments for each system will accumulate to purchase additional systems for more homes."

More information soon to come on our Research and Information page but before then kindly help us in developing a Project Plan by sharing your indepth knowledge of a part or the whole of the sector and how you think a budget of $50,000.00 executed within a year period will impact positively towards this.

Thank you

My first task here is to thank Lizmoses and co for a job well done. Furthermore without going into too much technical details, the Energy sector needs a total overhaul i.e reorganisation. With particular respect to the Power supply problems we have in Nigeria, the Power Holding Company and other associated component companies need to be decentralised. As such we will have a number of companies responsible for distribution of power supply across the country. This will braek the stranglehold of monopoly, and encourage competition for customers' patronage (i.e customer - led) and High performance. For this to become legal and effective an enabling law should be enacted by the Nigerian Legislature. Part of that law should include the power of consumers to seek for recompense if these Power distributing companies do not meet their obligations under the terms and conditions to be laid down. Furthermore there should be established a watchdog (i.e an independent body recognised under the law) that will be solely responsible for monitoring the performance of the various power distribution companies. Performance targets should be set to which these power distribution companies should strictly adhere to, and any company not meeting these targets should be susceptible to very hefty fines or/and other stiff penalties. Considering the current state of affairs in the Power sector, there is obviously the need for huge investments. The way to source for badly needed investments is not to dip into government resources, but to evolve an effective Private Public Participation (PPP) Initiative. This system has worked veritably well in a number of projects that i am aware of in many countries over the world. It will work out very well because the terms and conditions governing such an initiative is clear to all participants. Any one within the initiavtive not fulfilling its part of the deal is also susceptible to huge fines.

Looking at other parts of the energy sector, the same principles can be employed such as in the oil sector with regards to building refineries.

Thanks to Lizmoses & Eja for taking this initiative and sustaining it thus far.
My uinitial thoughts are that we:

* encourage people, especially educational institutions, visible corporations and government agencies to obtain part of their energy supply from solar panels. It is saddening when I read that a major private university runs virtually 24 hours on diesel powered generators. Meanwhile universities should not only research into new better ways of doing things but also lead the way in using such innovations.
* can assist in ensuring that whatever naira or dollar is allocated is actually spent for the power generation and distribution purpose. Now that may involve identifying and supporting (if it already exists) a (preferably non-governmental) watchdog agency. If it does not already exist then we can explore ways of being catalysts to its (their) formation. I am sure most of us realise that if the money that was meant to be spent in the last nine years were really spent as declared the problem would have been greatly minimised.
* encourage ourselves and others to pay our PHCN bills as and when due. It is ironical and ridiculous that we will spend so much for diesel daily/weekly, not counting the cost of teh generator itself, and yet find it difficult to settle PHCN bills that may be a fraction thereof by asking "for how long dem bin give us light sef?"
