A Nigerian state governor who was charged with money laundering in the UK has been impeached and arrested in his oil-rich home state of Bayelsa.

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was detained by police after losing the immunity from prosecution that he enjoyed in office.

Riot police clashed violently with stone-throwing youths as business remained paralysed in much of southeastern Nigeria on the second day of protests called to demand an independent homeland for the 40-million-strong Igbo people.

Witnesses said that police had shot dead at least three people in the market city of Onitsha on Tuesday, and relatives showed AFP the corpse of 29-year-old Ikechukwu Okere, who died from bullet wounds.
