Nigeria fears send oil prices up
BBC News Website/Business.

[The market is nervous ahead of elections in Africa's largest producer ]

Oil prices have been sent higher ahead of elections in Nigeria, amid fears that a weak government could make oil supplies more vulnerable to violence.

Crude oil in London added 37 cents to $66.31 a barrel while US crude was just under a dollar higher at $62.82.

Production of around 500,000 barrels a day of oil in Nigeria - Africa's biggest producer - was cut a year ago after attacks on oil installations.

In addition fears over Iran's nuclear programme are adding to market jitters.

"We are concerned going into this weekend with the Nigerian elections," said Kevin Blemkin, a Man Financial broker.

The gap in price between the US and UK oil price is due to a recent glut of oil in the US - the world's largest consumer - but analysts say the UK price is more indicative of wider trends.

On the upside, recent data showed faster processing rates at US refineries, which helped calm market fears.

"There are easing concerns about the supply shortage in the US gasoline market," said Makoto Takeda, assistant manager at Bansei Securities.

For update and views about the elections, BBC's "Reporter's Log" and "Voter's Log" might be good sources.

Enjoy!

The senate president is just being pretentious. What do you expect from a man who has aligned himself with the opposition in Enugu to be undermining his governor and his party?
It might be true that his governor did not support his emergence as senate president, but the governor has the right to support any candidate of his choice. And better still, the governor supported another Enugu indigene. I know that since that time, the senate president never missed any opportunity to undermine the governor. I don't know how the elections went in Enugu but I believe the senate president is not someone to be relied upon for accurate picture of things in the state. He has clearly established a bias against the government and the ruling party in the state. He simply lacks the moral right to talk about vote rigging in Enugu when as a matter of fact, it was the same Ebeano group of Chimaroke Nnamani that sent him to the senate in the same way they acted last Saturday. So, Ken Nnamani should stop fooling himself.

Olusola:

When are you ever going to stand up for something?

You are always straddling issues and camps.

Nnamani has every right like every other Nigerian..

- You and I included -

To speak the truth and speak that truth he did!

You've been hiding behind the curtain of Credibility

To lambast others who speak the truth.

The truth is the truth no matter who speaks it.

And you can't go around saying others can't speak

Because they did this or that in the Past

That is what you have hinged ALL of your argument on,

That has been constant your Mantra on this Forum.

Listen, Ken Nnamani has conducted himself with Honor

Where others like your Mr. President have not.

He commands far more respect than all your Heroes.

And yes again including your President!!!

Not once have we seen you counter anything he does..

All you keep saying is "I am for Nobody"

You are like a Sniper who shoots from the Shadows!

Whereas the truth is obvious here.

Better be a Paul Adujie than hide behind shadows.

That way, you save yourself the headache.

Come out and shoot like a man!

Ken Nnamani ain't fooling nobody.

I am convinced your prejudice informs your judgement.

Auspicious.

Auspy,
I don't know who are your heroes, but I don't have one. If at all I will have one, I prefer a dead man to be my hero than any living man. I restate the fact that I hold no allegiance to nobody, whether Obj, Atiku or what have you. You are free to support whoever you want but I don't have to commit myself to anybody. As I said sometime ago, most of the loud critical voices we have today are not better than those in government. It's all empty talks and rhetorics with no concrete alternatives. I hate it when people who in my judgment are as bad as those in government try to pretend as if they are good or saints. And that's why I keep telling you that Obj may be bad, but am yet to see any credible alternative among those jostling for his position. The government might not be the best, but I haven't seen any of these loud mouths forming a better government. So,when someone who is a product of electoral fraud complains about another fraud, I do not take him serious. I believe he that comes to equity must come with clean hands. Once again, it's your choice to support or adopt anybody as your hero. You can take any position that you like but I am not a loyalist of anyone.

Are you insinuating that the Right Honourable Senator Ken Nnamani (GCON) rigged his way to the Senate? Please shed some more badly needed light on this matter. I beg you, jo.

Muchas gracias.

How Today’s Election Will Be Rigged

. Opposition in disarray

Today’s presidential and National Assembly elections appear doomed like the state elections of last week. Feelers from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the political class have revealed that today’s election could be fundamentally flawed to favour the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But reality hit the opposition parties very hard in many ways this Tuesday. During their meeting in Abuja, snippets of the rigging formula of the PDP and Aso Rock were leaked.

Their fears were confirmed on Wednesday when soldiers, apparently not in the know of the rigging plot, intercepted a trailer carrying ballot boxes stuffed with thumb-printed ballot papers in favour of the PDP for today’s elections. Although it also carried some grains, the truck marked AA765FKA meant for a north-western state, was parked in the premises of the 1st Division of the Nigerian Army (1 DV) Kano. Others dispatched to other areas were lucky. They all got to their destinations undetected.

Investigations by Leadership Weekend revealed that the first phase of the exercise was conducted on Monday when Prof. Maurice Iwu, INEC boss, announced the names of the company that will transmit today’s election results.

The N4 billion contract, already described as dubious, was given to Reliance Telecom Limited (RELTEL) owned by Annie Okonkwo, a senatorial candidate on the platform of the PDP and a friend to Andy Uba, the governor-elect of Anambra State.

This guy is partner to Andy Uba. Uba is Maurice Iwu’s godfather and both are Obasanjo’s houseboys. This is a scheme and mechanism for rigging elections. Annie Okonkwo is a fraudulent man. He is going to sit in his kitchen and produce results of the election,” a source at INEC warned.

But the deed has already been done and cannot be reversed, even though the opposition parties are crying belatedly. Results of today’s election are expected to be announced in Abuja and not in the states. Prof. Iwu had, last week, warned that Nigerians should discountenance any Internet results.

It was, however, gathered that the real rigging is expected to begin from the states, where results being compiled at the state levels are expected to be altered in favour of the ruling PDP. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State seems not to have read correctly the lips of his boss in Abuja by not co-operating with the leadership of the PDP in the state. Already, the PDP in the state is after his jugular. Chief Sanya Orungbemi, the Ondo State PDP chairman, and Prof. Olu Agbi, director-general of the Agagu Campaign Organisation, have called for his redeployment and cancellation of election results in eight local government councils in the state.

Chief Orungbemi has already alleged that last Saturday’s elections were “massively rigged” in favour of the Labour Party (LP) by INEC officials.
The state PDP had on Wednesday petitioned the INEC chairman, to remove the state REC, Mr. Josiah Uwazuruonye, before today’s presidential and National Assembly elections. It said that the party had lost confidence in the REC, in spite of the fact that PDP won the elections by 53 per cent of the total votes cast.

“The PDP is surprised at the level at which the election results were manipulated,” the chairman added. Orungbemi claimed that INEC officials connived with LP to rig the election in these local government areas: Akoko South-West, Akoko South-East, Owo, Ondo West and East, Idanre, Ifedore and Akure South. He said the PDP was assembling its lawyers to contest the results in the affected areas.

It was, however, gathered that the state RECs were summoned to Abuja during the week and “told the new thinking in the commission”. Those serving in friendly PDP states had started celebrating their sudden transformation into the millionaire club.

Yesterday, an official vehicle, a jeep belonging to the Akwa Ibom REC, was involved in a crash, killing two persons. The several bottles of spirits and beer found in the jeep infuriated sympathisers who were drawn to the scene of the accident. Occupants of the jeep were said to be rushing to the airport after celebrating their new-found financial status beyond what was officially tagged “logistics” for the RECs. It was gathered that PDP governors and governors-elect were instructed to take adequate care of the RECs.

It was gathered that, apart from the official bravado of the inspector general of Police (IGP) and instructions given to state police commissioners to deal with troublemakers, the rednecks were actually told to be of assistance to the political parties, particularly PDP.
Leadership Weekend learnt that political thugs are going to be active during today’s elections. Policemen have allegedly been told to turn a blind eye to their activities. Unlike last week when armed thugs on motorcycles engaged police and military men in Rivers State, it was gathered that the uniformed officers would give them cover this time.

Already, the police have begun mass arrest of opposition stalwarts. In Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, an ex-military officer has prepared a long list of opposition leaders to be arrested. Police cells in Lokoja, like others in the country, are now hosting hundreds of electoral offenders. For today, it was learnt that voters would be harassed by security agents with a view to discouraging them from participating in the exercise. The strategy, it was gathered, was to make stuffing of ballot boxes easy.
Investigations conducted by Leadership Weekend revealed that some ballot papers meant for polling booths are going to be withheld until after the elections.

But these challenges would have been an easy hurdle to surmount if the opposition had been cohesive. The opposition parties went their different ways after their celebrated meeting on Tuesday. While some political parties believed that the election should be boycotted since the result had been compiled even before it held, others felt there was need to be part of it so as to be legally qualified to challenge the outcome of the exercise in court. General Muhammadu Buhari, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate leads this school of thought. His position has, however, pitted him against Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Action Congress (AC) flagbearer.

Buhari had, in a press statement, stressed that “boycott is not a democratic action because by boycotting the election, we forfeit our right to participate. History of boycotts suggests that if we boycott Saturday’s (today) election, it will make it easier for government to manipulate the process and we shall have no legal right to question any wrongdoing”.

Reacting to Buhari’s position, the vice president and AC presidential candidate described Buhari’s action as a “stab in the back!” He indicated his willingness to continue with today’s polls.

The ANPP presidential candidate had earlier said he would not go to court to counter the outcome of today’s election but that the electorate, who must have been robbed, should resort to mass action. This position got an endorsement from the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Its president, Abdullahi Sule-Kano, in a statement issued during the week also canvassed mass action as a way of addressing electoral fraud recorded nationwide last Saturday.

Perhaps the greatest potent threat was the alarm raised by the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). The coalition claimed that over 80,000 guns and 32 million bullets had been imported by the PDP-led government specifically for today’s elections.

NADECO’s spokesman, Mr. Babe Adams, who made this stunning revelation, vowed that should the PDP rig today’s election, Nigerians would fight till
