Anyone who has been following the Nigerian music scene, particularly in the past 5 years would be amazed by the explosion of talent in every genre. There is an ongoing series on this site devoted to exposing diverse talent in the gospel genre. You can find the first two articles in that series here and here.

It's another valentine's day, meaning that its time for roses, champaign, candlelit dinners, and music with strong messages of love, devotion, passion, desire and commitment. Since romance is the reason for this season, the focus of this article is the Nigerian love song. Turns out that there is no longer any reason to wine, dine and seduce your lady (or dude) with Barry White, or Stevie wonder, or whatever American or European artists float your boat (and theirs). The Nigerians are stepping up to the plate in a variety of styles and languages, and I tell you, the music is amazing! But you don't have to take my word for it – just listen as I titillate your senses with the best of Nigerian romantic music in the last couple of years:

Banky W: This dude is one of Nigeria's kings of Rhythm and blues (we will get to the other in a second). With his cute good looks and smooth vocals, you can't help falling for him even as you are mesmerized by his lovely music.
a) Strong ting {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/BankyW_Strong_Ting.mp3{/audio}

a)Yori yori. {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Bracket_yori_yori.mp3{/audio}

a)With this woman {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Darey_With_This_Woman.mp3{/audio}

D'banj: The kokomaster himself! Dude is not known for his tenderness, but for swagger and his kokomycin. But you could almost swear that there was a tender side to him, with this song about falling in love. As he said "We suppose marry, because you don make me fall in love!" Play this to your Naija woman with a ring, and the rest is history!!
a)Fall in love {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Dbanj_Fall_in_love.mp3{/audio}

Paul play: This seriously talented offspring of I.K Dairo is doing sweet things for the contemporary music scene. His music just hits the spot for me, and I trust it will do the same for you and your significant other as well:

a) Forever {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Paul_play_Forever.mp3{/audio}

b)You and me{audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Paul_play_You_and_Me.mp3{/audio}

c)Angel of my life {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Paul_Play_Angel_Of_My_Life.mp3{/audio}

P square: It would be totally remiss of me to miss out on one of Nigeria's most talented musical exports. Peter and Paul Okoye, the twins that make up the talented duo of P square currently rule the African music scene. They have girls from all over the continent eating out of their hands with their highly contagious music. Play some of these for your significant other, and watch them catch the bug (for you hopefully!).

b)No one like you {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Psquare_No_One_Like_U.mp3{/audio}

c)I love you {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Psquare_I_Love_You.mp3{/audio}

Sammie Okposo: Better known for his gospel songs than his love songs, Sammie nevertheless in this song upholds commitment. Nice song to play at a wedding or proposal (hint, hint!!)

a)I do

Shoboi: One of my very favorite love songs. Ever! I don't know the girl that would not melt under the influence of this very intense ballad. Funny thing is far as I know, Shoboi has not even released the album yet (I could be wrong, but I have not been able to find it anywhere). And yet this song, it's justÂ…Â….! In fact, just listen to it: a) Hero {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Shoboi_Hero.mp3{/audio}

Tosin Martins: Could not help but add this one, such a sexy romantic song. Sing it to your madam and just watch her love you all the more:a)Olo mi {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/Tosin_Martins_Olo_Mi.mp3{/audio}

Tuface: I know everyone would have my head if I did not add the song that made Tuface an international superstar. What is there to say about the song? Nothing – it's all been said. Just enjoy it!

a)African Queen {audio}http://www.village-music.net/moviemadam/Valentine2010/TuFace_Idibia_African_Queen.mp3{/audio}
