Obasanjo Was Not Quizzed By The Metropolitan Police– Dozie Nwanna

By Uche Nworah

Ambassador Dozie Nwanna, Nigeria’s acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom has debunked claims that the immediate past president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo was a guest of the London Metropolitan Police during a recent visit to the United Kingdom.

HE, Ambassador Dozie Nwanna

In a brief telephone interview, Ambassador Nwanna cautioned that malicious allegations which abound freely on the internet were potentially dangerous, and could hurt people, their families, careers and reputation. He was reacting to widely circulated information on the internet started by Leadership, a Nigeria – based daily, which alleged that President Obasanjo was quizzed in connection with the Met’s ongoing investigation into the corrupt activities of James Ibori, the former governor of Delta state.

“Nigerians have the right to demand for transparency and good governance from their leaders - immediate and past, but we must also ensure that such expectations do not lead us on to the part of indulging in spurious allegations and speculations, such that we begin to undermine the good governance we all yearn for”, Ambassador Nwanna cautioned.

To this end, the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom has issued a press release explaining the circumstances of President Obasanjo’s recent visit to the United Kingdom.  It has also released a copy of a letter from the London Metropolitan Police stating that the former Nigerian president was never its guest during the period in question.

The letter signed by Detective Superintendent Trevor Shepherd states that “There was no contact between this department with Chief Obasanjo in the Uk between 17th and 24th October, 2007”.

Journalists should try and verify their sources before doing mass communication especially in this internet age when info can go global easily. Thanks Uche for bringing this to the attention of the vilage.:mad:

Dear Mr Uche Nworah,

I want to thank you for acting for the acting Nigerian High Commissioner in London by bringing this message to our attention.

May I also congratulate you on this very important assignment that you have secured. It surely must be in recognition of your unflinching efforts in putting out a positive image of Nigeria in otherwise unflattering circumstances. Well done.

Now to the matter at hand. We have been so far unable to download your attachments but accepting your bonafides for a minute, can you please ask the acting High Commissioner on behalf of all Nigerians, to ask the British Police why they would not have deemed it necessary to invite Chief Obasanjo to explain his role in the matter? Is it because he was not named as claimed or because they do not believe that Ibori had anything to do with Obasanjo's receipt of a Bombadier jet? Would they not be interested to know how much of his salary he saved and if it was sufficient to buy a jet or if it was given to him as a gift, what he could have done to deserve such a gift? Also since he was in receipt of such a gift, how did he intend to maintain such a high maintenance asset? Are the Police not interested to know why Nigeria under his watch leaked so much like a sieve that known friends of his were flooding the international financial system with funds suspected to be looted from Nigeria. Would they not wish to know if this was a deliberate economic policy of Nigeria to take from the poor and give to the rich?

Also, seeing as Obasanjo for long has held himself unaccountable to the Nigerian people, preferring to account only to the international community through their media and his surrogates in multilateral institutions (not forgetting his oil broking friends at Goodworks), it would have been a good opportunity for him to so do.

Furthermore, can the acting Nigerian High Commissioner also tell us if Obasanjo saw Baronness Chalker in London and why?

Can he also tell us if he saw Prime Minister Gordon Brown and/or ex Prime Minister Tony Blair, if not, why not?

Can he also tell us, what was the purpose of Obasanjo's visit and if the Nigerian people met any of his expenses?

Can he also tell us how long Obasanjo was in London?

Can you aslo tell us if his school was on holiday or he was playing truant?

The further question for the acting Nigerian High Commissioner is, since when did the Police in the UK start issuing statements on behalf of foreign individuals exonerating them from questioning? Is that not the job of the Nigerian AGF?

Final question for the acting Nigerian High Commissioner is, how far with the Ibori matter and are Ibori, Dariye and Alamco the only former Nigerian officials to have cases with the British Police? If not, whom are the others and when shall those without cases receive their letters of exoneration from the British Police? For the sake of a level playing field, it would be good if such letters are released on the unsuspecting Nigerian public through the same channels of acting Nigerian High Commissioner to the acting spokesman to the NVS board.

Mr Nworah, I am sure that your appointment is to represent the acting Nigerian High Commissioner and not the former President. However if both jobs are the same, then maybe we can have your clarification so we know where to direct our enquiries on further specifics with regards to the former President.

I am sure other villagers have questions for you to take back to the acting Nigerian Hgh Commissioner. So don't go yet.

Yours sincerely,

Alhaji Gwobezentashi Janinjaka of Malumfashi via Saminaka

Dear Gwobe,

I think your eyes have left the football and is on the crowd watching the game. The ball was a newspaper report boldly affirming that Our Former Father was quizzed in London while on social visit last week. As a result some of us popped champagne, :D:D waiting for the sparks to fly upwards,:eek: only to to discover that albeit, it was a palpable fallacy.
Now government has come out to deny with apt bona fides that it was not true and instead of focusng on the message you started attacking the messenger, Uche.
I think that is unfair. If u knew what the Field Marshall of Egbaland and the immediate past Father of modern Nigeria did in London, let us villagers know so that we can take further action. But as for meeting with the Met, Uche has gratefully let us know that the Ag HC has put paid to that rumour. Did I speak well villagers?. :D:D I am sure that with your degree of doubts against Uche's motives, even if he walks on water, you may come and report to villagers that he does not know how to swim.

Haba Haba Akuluouno, na bad thing to ask question of the representatives of the Nigerian people again? Where is accountability and responsibility? I do not see where I have attacked Uche here. Like others, I have congratulated him on his new assignment. Perhaps it is the prevailing climate of cynism encouraged by a cloak and dagger disposition to public life that leads you to your assumptions. Where has Uche claimed to be Jesus in this matter so we can attack him?

Yes, I have finally read the expansive and robust defence of the former President and indeed some of my questions were answered. Shall other former public figures subject to similar allegations expect robust defences from the acting Nigerian High Commissioner or is this service only reserved for Obasanjo? There are however some follow up questions which must now await further disclosure of the particular circumstances of this visit.

An interesting dimension is introduced in the matter of the wedding where Obasanjo we are told acted as father of the bride. The last time we know he acted in similar capacity, the bride eventually ended in his bed. Hopefully, the new oko iyawo will tread carefully and keep his wife on a very short leash.

Coming back to the matter at hand, no doubt Obasanjo now has the substance to sue Leadership for defamation. No doubt Sam and co, will relish the opportunity to put Obasanjo on the stand and ask him a wide range of questions about his activities travelling abroad and about in the name and on account of Nigeria. His mode of transportation at this and other times, finances etc.

Ordinarily the information which the government spokesmen are now putting out should have been in the public domain from the get go. It is when government business is conducted in the hush hush that rumours thrive.

Finally my dear Akuluouno, my eyes have not left anywhere. They are everywhere where matter concern Nigeria. So make you siddon jeje. Is it not interesting though that this was a matter published in a Nigerian newspaper but all that seems to exercise the acting High Commissioner is what was published on the NVS. It says something about the power of NVS (or is it Uche's bias?).

Aluta!

Is it also right to still be referring to Obasanjo as President after 6 months of Umaru Yar'Adua's presidency?

That slip, if it is one, speaks volume of the arse licking propensity of the people at the High Commission and their new hatchet man, Uche.
