Okey Ndibe Vs Andy Uba: A Critical Appraisal
Professor Okey Ndibe is a great Nigerian writer. From every angle one looks at it he remains one of the critical voices of reason to have come from our much-abused country. With great minds like him one is happy that there are still men and women of conscience still left standing in a season of mind-boggling moral and fiscal corruption. The American-based teacher comes down hard every week on those in (and out of) power that deserve nothing but scorn and contempt from serious uncompromising critics.
I started reading Okey right from when he was writing for The Guardian. From there he was allegedly eased out because of his hardline views and he pitched his literary tent with The Sun, a tabloid that has maintained its wide readership because of its professionalism and pursuit of truth. From The Sun and the NVS, Okey Ndibe weekly throws mud at those deserving of same, he continually calls a spade no other name but spade in a unique flowing prose. His style and incorruptible stand has endeared him to those of us up against evil and graft in our socio-political life as a nation.
Okey Ndibe strikes always unmistakingly at the heart of the Nigerian tragedy, exposing the rot and apportioning blame no matter whose ox is gored. He tells it as it is without minding whose sleep is murdered. Characteristically he has taken on the system, from the Anambra gubernatorial 419 named Andy Uba, to the Mike Okiro-led Police; from Terry Waya's illicit wealth to the thieving governors; from President Yar'Adua's illegitimate mandate to Maurice Iwu's electoral brigandage of April 14th and 21st. The cascading fortunes of majority of Nigerians get weekly mention from Okey whose defense of uprightness and probity in governance is legendary.
To say that Okey Ndibe is a controversial writer may be stating the obvious. His critical takes on issues of the day has elicited harsh rejoinders and rebuttals from concerned quarters. His abiding interest in who governs our state of Anambra is worthy of praise. But the greatest battle he has had to wage is against Andy Uba and his paid agents. The former President Olusegun Obasanjo's Special Assistant on Domestic Matters who pilfered billions of naira from his service years in Aso Rock now uses the money to wage war against those who fight his perjury and forgery.
A very smart criminal that he is Andy recruited Maurice Iwu as INEC boss in order to facilitate his guber ambitions as Anambra State Governor. In the end he was predictably 'coronated' and after few weeks the Supreme Court annulled his victory at the polls declaring that the incumbency of Peter Obi has not yet run its full constitutional course. When he fell from his imposed position in Awka he ran back to Abuja where he is now based as a godfather and trouble shooter of the ruling party.
Andy Uba's hired hands like Chuka Nwosu, Sylvanus Nsofor, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Jerome Azubuko have turned the heat on Okey seeking to suffocate his thoughts and to make him abandon his smear campaign against their principal swimming in laundered hefty pool of cash. But from the look of things it seems they have failed to tame Ndibe. Rather they have armed him more with dangerous weapons with which he seeks to shoot down Andy Uba from the Olympian height he undeservedly places himself. In the cross-fire that ensued I believe Okey Ndibe has come out unscathed leaving the Uba camp bruised and battered. Apart from commanding the English language Okey stands on a superior moral highground than the Uba hirelings.
However to be fair certain points raised by the Uba hack-writers deserve to be revisited here. Among those who seem to take the Uba side, the Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe's article entitled "Andy Uba and Okey Ndibe's activism" ruffled feathers and provoked counter articles. One of those who wrote in to criticise Ellis-Ezenekwe is one Rudolf Okonkwo whom the former described as "an innocent fool" for mixing up facts while penning down what in his imagination authors like Ndibe or Sahara Reporters' Sowore cannot dare scribble. And another is a great mind named Franklyne Ogbunwezeh who seldom intervenes (much like nnukwu mmanwu, big masquerade). But when Okey Ndibe joined issues with Ikenna he dismissed him as "a paid distraction".
One of Ikenna's grouses with Okey is his penchant to attack Andy Uba sometimes recycling already known shortcomings of his. Again he asked why Okey's activism does not include defending his people back home in Amawbia who are suffering, like the majority of Anambrarians, the menace of gully erosion and other social deprivations. Other critics wonder when Okey would return to join the political fray rather than throwing missiles from his "condominium" in America while Nwosu questioned why he has not written a tribute to Chimamanda Adichie as if it is mandatory for one to write one.
In the NVS, villagers known for their dissenting views, masked in anonymity, always rise in disagreement with Okey's style and acidic opinions. When the Police Force Headquarters issued a rejoinder to "Murder Incorporated" authored by the acclaimed Professor many villagers commended police spokesman Haz Iwendi for taking on Okey. Others charged him for leaving out Orji Uzor Kalu, Publisher of The Sun and former Abia State governor, while castigating his peers of thieving governors. Kalu is not a saint but he cannot be said to have been in the same league with the Iboris, Dariyes, Alams or Odilis.
Perhaps their criticism has made Okey diversify a bit in his topics for discussion concentrating less on Olusegun Obasanjo and his legendary failures as President or Andy Uba and his trailer-load of forged certificates. The latter's dream of ruling Anambra State is evaporating as each day passes by. Okey Ndibe reserves the right on what he choses to write about. I don't know if his contract with The Sun forbids him from writing about the newspaper's proprietor but now that Kalu is still being tried is it not better to wait for justice to run its full course before we conclude or pronounce him guilty or not? But I feel bringing the plight of Okey's people to national limelight by writing in equal zeal social issues of such importance will go a long way in ameliorating their worsening living conditions. His activism should be deployed towards that goal too.
I doff my hat for this irrepressible social critic. And advice him humbly to be security conscious because coded threats by the Uba camp may mean seeking him out for raw deal in America. Compliments of the great season to the great Okey Ndibe.
