Okey Ndibe Vs Andy Uba: A Critical Appraisal

Professor Okey Ndibe is a great Nigerian writer. From every angle one looks at it he remains one of the critical voices of reason to have come from our much-abused country. With great minds like him one is happy that there are still men and women of conscience still left standing in a season of mind-boggling moral and fiscal corruption. The American-based teacher comes down hard every week on those in (and out of) power that deserve nothing but scorn and contempt from serious uncompromising critics.

I started reading Okey right from when he was writing for The Guardian. From there he was allegedly eased out because of his hardline views and he pitched his literary tent with The Sun, a tabloid that has maintained its wide readership because of its professionalism and pursuit of truth. From The Sun and the NVS, Okey Ndibe weekly throws mud at those deserving of same, he continually calls a spade no other name but spade in a unique flowing prose. His style and incorruptible stand has endeared him to those of us up against evil and graft in our socio-political life as a nation.

Okey Ndibe strikes always unmistakingly at the heart of the Nigerian tragedy, exposing the rot and apportioning blame no matter whose ox is gored. He tells it as it is without minding whose sleep is murdered. Characteristically he has taken on the system, from the Anambra gubernatorial 419 named Andy Uba, to the Mike Okiro-led Police; from Terry Waya's illicit wealth to the thieving governors; from President Yar'Adua's illegitimate mandate to Maurice Iwu's electoral brigandage of April 14th and 21st. The cascading fortunes of majority of Nigerians get weekly mention from Okey whose defense of uprightness and probity in governance is legendary.

To say that Okey Ndibe is a controversial writer may be stating the obvious. His critical takes on issues of the day has elicited harsh rejoinders and rebuttals from concerned quarters. His abiding interest in who governs our state of Anambra is worthy of praise. But the greatest battle he has had to wage is against Andy Uba and his paid agents. The former President Olusegun Obasanjo's Special Assistant on Domestic Matters who pilfered billions of naira from his service years in Aso Rock now uses the money to wage war against those who fight his perjury and forgery.

A very smart criminal that he is Andy recruited Maurice Iwu as INEC boss in order to facilitate his guber ambitions as Anambra State Governor. In the end he was predictably 'coronated' and after few weeks the Supreme Court annulled his victory at the polls declaring that the incumbency of Peter Obi has not yet run its full constitutional course. When he fell from his imposed position in Awka he ran back to Abuja where he is now based as a godfather and trouble shooter of the ruling party.

Andy Uba's hired hands like Chuka Nwosu, Sylvanus Nsofor, Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Jerome Azubuko have turned the heat on Okey seeking to suffocate his thoughts and to make him abandon his smear campaign against their principal swimming in laundered hefty pool of cash. But from the look of things it seems they have failed to tame Ndibe. Rather they have armed him more with dangerous weapons with which he seeks to shoot down Andy Uba from the Olympian height he undeservedly places himself. In the cross-fire that ensued I believe Okey Ndibe has come out unscathed leaving the Uba camp bruised and battered. Apart from commanding the English language Okey stands on a superior moral highground than the Uba hirelings.

However to be fair certain points raised by the Uba hack-writers deserve to be revisited here. Among those who seem to take the Uba side, the Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe's article entitled "Andy Uba and Okey Ndibe's activism" ruffled feathers and provoked counter articles. One of those who wrote in to criticise Ellis-Ezenekwe is one Rudolf Okonkwo whom the former described as "an innocent fool" for mixing up facts while penning down what in his imagination authors like Ndibe or Sahara Reporters' Sowore cannot dare scribble. And another is a great mind named Franklyne Ogbunwezeh who seldom intervenes (much like nnukwu mmanwu, big masquerade). But when Okey Ndibe joined issues with Ikenna he dismissed him as "a paid distraction".

One of Ikenna's grouses with Okey is his penchant to attack Andy Uba sometimes recycling already known shortcomings of his. Again he asked why Okey's activism does not include defending his people back home in Amawbia who are suffering, like the majority of Anambrarians, the menace of gully erosion and other social deprivations. Other critics wonder when Okey would return to join the political fray rather than throwing missiles from his "condominium" in America while Nwosu questioned why he has not written a tribute to Chimamanda Adichie as if it is mandatory for one to write one.

In the NVS, villagers known for their dissenting views, masked in anonymity, always rise in disagreement with Okey's style and acidic opinions. When the Police Force Headquarters issued a rejoinder to "Murder Incorporated" authored by the acclaimed Professor many villagers commended police spokesman Haz Iwendi for taking on Okey. Others charged him for leaving out Orji Uzor Kalu, Publisher of The Sun and former Abia State governor, while castigating his peers of thieving governors. Kalu is not a saint but he cannot be said to have been in the same league with the Iboris, Dariyes, Alams or Odilis.

Perhaps their criticism has made Okey diversify a bit in his topics for discussion concentrating less on Olusegun Obasanjo and his legendary failures as President or Andy Uba and his trailer-load of forged certificates. The latter's dream of ruling Anambra State is evaporating as each day passes by.

Okey Ndibe reserves the right on what he choses to write about. I don't know if his contract with The Sun forbids him from writing about the newspaper's proprietor but now that Kalu is still being tried is it not better to wait for justice to run its full course before we conclude or pronounce him guilty or not? But I feel bringing the plight of Okey's people to national limelight by writing in equal zeal social issues of such importance will go a long way in ameliorating their worsening living conditions. His activism should be deployed towards that goal too.

I doff my hat for this irrepressible social critic. And advice him humbly to be security conscious because coded threats by the Uba camp may mean seeking him out for raw deal in America. Compliments of the great season to the great Okey Ndibe.

SOC,

Thank you for writing. As for me, I see beyond what you wrote here and believe me, I can only imagine the things you would have loved to write but instead, you wisely chose dilpomacy and careful threading....Clever?

Again, you made this concise, touching here and there not trying to spill some can of worms.

Anonymity has been used to spread heresy on this site and you can tell which men are true to their words when you apply wisdom on this NVS and elsewhere.

Usually there is more in life than what the eyes behold at each point in time.

You have heard about all the lizards lying on their belly but not knowing which one has stomach ache.

In the near future, believe me, ALL hidden truths about paid agents and hungry journalism will unfold. You know what happens when you know the truth....it sets you free!

=>Kalu is not a saint but he cannot be said to have been in the same league with the Iboris, Dariyes, Alams or Odilis.

Nuhu Ribadu said that Kalu stole more than any governor in the history of Nigeria. Should I take his words or yours?

your essay would have been that much better, if you did not come into it with such barely conceived dislike of mr andy uba. i have no liking whatsoever for andy uba either (it is truly hard to like someone who has committed so much mayhem and has so little substance), and i do have a preference for mr ndibe's articles AND stance, but your appraisal is anything but critical. subjective is a better word. a critical appraisal would simply have presented facts, and left it to the reader to judge. that sir, you did not.

Mr Okenwa,
But for the sentence in bold, your article is what is expected from any person who knows the value of INTERGRITY. My disagreement with the part in bold is that it beggars logic. Prof Okey can not be fighting all the ills of the society which in the case of Nigeria are enormous and entrenched. It is like asking RIBADU to also be fighting ARMED ROBBERS because many of them operate in his village!

Let other people take up those other issues, those who are accusing Prof. Okey are using that as a strategy to weaken his resolve. Please, do not add to such devious intention.

My dear friend SOC,

I'll stick to our tradition of friendly criticism here as I have learnt from you. Without ill feelings, I guess your take is strongly biased against Andy Uba. I do not know much about this fellow. All I do know is that he has a strong case to answer regarding qualifications that he has long been parading and have been credibly called into question. If you called yourself a holder of a doctorate degree in Germany without truly owning one, it is a criminal offence. I wholly agreed with Okey Ndibe in the simple questions he asked Andy Uba to clarify.

At the time the Uba camp responded however, there were doubts cast on the integrity of Okey Ndibe. I also know little or nothing about him. They say he works for a political opponent. Some Ibru and I think (as you rightly mentioned) Orji Kalu.

The implication was that Andy Uba (understandably) could not feel obligated to clarify his soiled reputation at the urging of an opponent. The question mark persists. In the same manner, I have not heard any single response from Okey Ndibe today, to clarify the correlation between his name in the payroll of a political opponent and his zealous attacks.
This has made me digest all these information with caution. We are dealing with two parties that do have questions to answer.

On a personal note buddy: (you may not like this, but I guess you'd permit me to say it for the sake of friendship) when you praise your subjects, you sometimes, do too much lavishing. I guess a single sentence of praise is enough and the reader gets the message. You devoted almost the complete opening of your essay to praises of Okey Ndibe (almost amounting to hero-worshipping my pal).

So fire back with due respect my good friend! Oh lest I forget, merry Christmas in advance to you and your family! May all wishes come true in this season of divine serenity!

Cheers

The only thing that should be subject to "a critical appraisal" about this article is the mental state of its author.

This is a sympathetic attempt at approval prostitution.

SOC, stop trying to suck up to people to create your own "halo effect."

Udokaamah,
You are very right, the mental state of SOC needs critical appraisal. He comes across as someone who has no opinion of his.Just a follow-follow writer. He said Kalu should not be crufied because he is not yet convicted, yet his god, Okey Ndibe has been nailing Andy to the cross when no court has convicted him. Lately, he condemned Ibori when he has not been convicted . We are waiting to see if Okey Ndibe will give equal dose of condemnation to Chris Ngige who was also arrested like Fayose and Ibori.
It is a pity that NVS gives the likes of Okenwa the medium to write rubbish. Anyway, that's cyber democracy!
As if he is being published in reputable journals, he will soon add this to his growing list of yeye articles on NVS in order to celebrate his achievement of writing 200 useless articles.

Nonsense!

Frisky Larr,
At least for once you were sober in your write-ups.
But, permit me to remind you that as the saying goes, those who live in glass houses do not throw stones.
Your advice to SOC is okay but you will do well to heed the same advice yourself in the course of you future writings.
Please, note that I mean no personal attacks on you but in the spirit of fairness, we must remember that those who seek equity must do so with clean hands.
Since we have common interest in the affairs of the country and and have undertaken to contribute our little quota in improving our lot as a people, we owe ourselves a duty to call ourselves to order when we err. No harm meant, really.
Have a very blessed and safe Christmas holidays.

Sam.
