Did A 'Jezebel' Murder Commissioner Enoma? Print E-mail
Written by Sunny Chris Okenwa
Monday, 07 April 2008

When at about 10pm that fateful weekend of Friday 28th March this year the late Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation Barrister Calus Enoma left his residence in Benin City -- in his private car with ordinary number plate without his Police orderly -- to keep an appointment with a certain woman that had called him on phone ostensibly for a normal usual rendesvous little did he know that it was a gruesome journey of no return.

Mister Enoma was said to have received a call and drove himself straight to the prestigious Palm Royal Hotel situated along the Lagos-Benin Expressway in Benin City.

While there he checked in as "Nosa Aliu" asking the hotel people never to disturb him in his suite. The late Commissioner was said to be a usual caller in the hotel with fake identity. Pray, why did the Commissioner prefer disguising himself if the business he had there was of no immoral import? Why did he instruct the hotel personel not to distract him in any manner? Or did he know by some satanic premonition that he was keeping a date with death?

In the early hours of Monday March 31st the Commissioner was found dead in his hotel suite with his dead body decomposing and swollen having spent three days and nights there unattended to! His hotel room was broken into by the law enforcement agents. Some indications point to a female company who must have played a fast one on Enoma after a bout or two of some sexual bliss. There was no trace of a gun-shot wound but a deep cut on his forehead suggested he was either strangled or hit with an object which sent him into the world beyond.

Edo State politics is one played sometimes without any modicum of scrupples. Politically-motivated assassination had happened there before so that of Commissioner Enoma cannot be said to be an exception or in isolation. It would be recalled that George Idah, former Chairman of Oredo Local Government (of which Benin City is headquarters) was murdered in his office many years ago. And up until now no one has ever been charged or convicted for that heinous crime.

The PDP is irreconciliably divided in Edo State with two powerful factions battling for control of state resources and apparatus of power. None of these squabbling factions is interested in good governance but how best to loot the resources of Edo State and oppress the people further. While the Tony Anenih faction is up against the Governor Osunbor/Ogbemudia camp the political intrigue that led to the emergence of Prof. Osunbor as the Governor is fast unravelling.

The Edo State Election Petition Tribunal had last month nullified the PDP Guber victory in the state returning Adams Oshiomhole of the AC Party as the rightful winner of the rigged election. Governor Osunbor and his Commissioners (like the murdered Commissioner Enoma and Tony Ikpasaja, Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Public Affairs) and godfathers are now embattled appealing the judgement.

It was Mr Ikpasaja who first broke the news of the Commissioner's disappearance disingeniously alluding to his been kidnapped by the opposition AC Party still basking in the euphoria of its Tribunal victory. Adams Oshiomhole, the AC Candidate and former President of the active NLC, had been accused by the Edo Deputy Governor Imasuen of "intimidating" the Tribunal Judges with his road-shows and mass-oriented strategies and antics on the streets. No one expected any less from the man of the people!

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Public Affairs somewhat over-reached himself when he announced Enoma's disappearance from home even giving the AC an ultimatum to produce him or risk whatever consequencies in his imagination. That is irresponsible on the part of Mr Ikpasaja against whom the Edo State AC has declared an intention to sue for libel and defamation.

And just last weekend Mr Ikpasaja, smarting from his own political exuberance and inexperience, on behalf of the Osunbor government, issued an apologetic statement retracting his misguided diatribe against the AC and Comrade Oshiomhole: "Government considers it premature and extremely hasty to make conclusions as contained in the said statement when the police had not had the opportunity of investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the commissioner and issuing a report thereon.

Accordingly, government wishes to retract the said statement in its entirety. In addition, government hereby issues unreserved apology to the Action Congress and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for any embarrassment caused by the said statement. This is, however, without prejudice to the findings of the police pursuant to their investigation".

Before his tragic demise Calus Enoma appeared to be a radical controversy-courting politician. As a Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the out-going Osunbor administration Enoma cut the pathetic picture of a concerned public official crying more than the bereaved (his boss) following the Tribunal's dutiful verdict returning the people's stolen mandate of April last year. In various press conferences Commissioner Enoma condemned the Tribunal and the honourable Judges that upheld the Edo people's choice of a Governor.

With Ikpasaja in tow Enoma launched a media war aimed at discrediting the Judges and their sound judgement. But only few were fooled!

The late Commissioner's wife, his only daughter and his aged father are all crying for justice asking the police authorities to unearth the circumstances sorrounding their breadwinner's sudden death! The father has asked the police and government to interrogate the former DG of Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) whom his late son had accused of threatening to deal with him for sacking him from his plum perch.

But while one expresses his condolences it is questionable if late Enoma's bereaved old dad or his wife had advised him to allow justice run its full course as he railed against the Tribunal judges and the verdict they reached which went down well with majority of Edos at home and abroad.

Who murdered Commissioner Calus Enoma? Finding the murderer(s) by the Police soon is akin to visiting God in heaven! Or Satan in hell!! The Nigerian Police Force under the stinkingly corrupt Sunday 'Mugu' Ehindero and President Obasanjo that did not unravel any mystery sorrounding many unresolved murders that were witnessed horribly from 1999 to 2007 cannot now be counted on, even when Sir Mike Okiro is in charge, to do miracle in spite of empty boasts of top cops. The list is inexhaustible: Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice murdered in Ibadan, Marshal Harry in Port Harcourt, Pa Alfred Rewane in Lagos, and the Igwes in Onitsha, etc.

Flashback 1986: Dele Giwa, the investigative 'Newswatch' founding Editor-in-chief was bombed into pieces in the traumatizing presence of his little boy Billy by Ibrahim Babangida's security Chiefs. Despite judicial efforts for years for justice to be done Lagos-based radical lawyer Chief Gani Fawehenmi has always met official cover-up and legal brickwall and hiccups.

Who murdered the hard-working Commissioner Calus Enoma and why? Since a certain 'Jezebel' was said to have passed a call across that pulled him out of his secured residence (for a usual weekend sexual bliss perhaps) it then stands to reason that she must have engineered his assassination. Or an entrenched political enemy must have recruited or employed the services of the 'Jezebel' to do the dirty job. In any case the police detectives probing how and why he was murdered have their job well cut out.

The late Calus, according to his father Pa Richard Enoma, was not a womaniser! For the father: "They deceived my child that bodyguards should not follow him. He did not go there (to the hotel) to chase women. He was not interested in women. The person who booked the hotel, the person who called him should all be investigated". Fine talk father but the junior Enoma, your son, you knew when he was practising law and out of the political horizon in Edo State may not have been the same person after the political baptism of fire as Commissioner.

Politics in Nigeria corrupts good morals; there's politics of corruption and corruption of politics! The late Commissioner Calus Enoma is a victim of political intrigues in Edo State and more than any other factor he provoked or aided his untimely tragic death.

Adieu Calus! May you never be a politician in your next coming! And even if you insist on being one, having experienced the limitless opulence and impunity associated with it in Nigeria, then not the cannon fodding type please.

What is the result of the post mortem examination or did he not have one?

The commissioner simply died of a sexual orgy induced heart attack, that's why he was naked.. During the attack he fell & bumped his head on the bed post, hence the gash on his head. The Jezebel or Jezebels( I heard the bigger your status the bigger your libido) panicked & vamoosed. After all it would be difficult to prove their innocence to the NPF.
What a farcical tragedy.

The author seems to have all the information required to help police resolve matter or is this another exhibition of the speculative nature of some journalists.

If your view is right, then I wonder how you could have these details without being connected with the police investigation team.

Enforcer,
The author surely betrayed his dislike for the dead man but to postulate that "HE IS CONNECTED WITH INVESTIGATION" is .........bordering on LIBEL.
Back to the author first:
"While there he checked in as "Nosa Aliu" asking the hotel people never to disturb him in his suite. The late Commissioner was said to be a usual caller in the hotel with fake identity. Pray, why did the Commissioner prefer disguising himself if the business he had there was of no immoral import? Why did he instruct the hotel personel not to distract him in any manner?"
Just because the man signed(or probably someone else booked and signed the reservation, murderers dont positively I.D themselves or did the receptionist request for photo-I.D on booking?) a different name does not infer he was up to some immoral business, he moght just want to be associated with "a HOTEL". U dont have proof he was the one that paid for and signed for that reservation; if you do, lay it down.

Secondly,
Again: Since a certain 'Jezebel' was said to have passed a call across that pulled him out of his secured residence (for a usual weekend sexual bliss perhaps)
The word "usual" implied you are 'aware' he has been coming to this hotel on previous weekends, for sex-capeds in the past? Do you have proof of this assertion?

Though am aware that the hierarchy of our "investigative police" are bone-heads and lack of equipment further compounds their stupidity, let me suggest a few things here:

1.) Can they identify the Hotel receptionist that took his 'order'?
2.) Can that receptionist confirm that Enoma actually was th one that booked the reservation and signed-in as "Nosa"?
3.) Has he done so before, can we see the Hotel's previous Guest records where he signed-in with a fake identity?
4.) How long (how many Hours/days) did he pay for? Was there a discrepancy between the duration he paid for and when suspicion(?) led to breaking down the door?
5.) Since the Police were the ones that broke down the door, did someone within the Hotel had access to him before the Police came? Obviously, the same receptionist would have seen Nosa's "female company", at least once (this time), or many times before.
6.) Did any one see her leave, and why has she not been positively identified and questioned?

At the minimum, every Hotel even the Brothels, should have some sort of security (whether human or mechanical cum electronics. That should be the law). This "prestigious Hotel" should be closed down immediately if it can not boast of a CCTV system. Pronto.
7.) If it does have one, as l expected, then we just need to "process" the files to extract as much info as we need and Jeeesus, u cant believe how much info, l can sniff-out of a recording. It may not be pro-active in 'prevention' of this event but l assure you, it would assists in docking the criminals and after some time, the criminals get conscious that its not "business as usual"; they would be caught. Every public "Danger zone" MUST have one.

8.) Do the Police have his Mobile-Phone? from it, they can ascertain if he has "spoken" with the same Lady or not and we all know that if the answer is "positive" (and l expect it will be, no man just exit his family to meet a lady he has never spoken to before, in an Hotel and ask 'not to be disturbed') then, we can trace by "call-triangulation" where the caller was, at each time those calls where made and that could help us nab the caller, who is very crucial to this story.
9.) If Nosa's companion is just an ordinary slot, she would be able o tell us if he died while "shinning Kongo" even before some autopsy can!
10.) Did she raise an alarm (couldn't have since the cadaver was already decomposing, which shows death must have occurred not too long after the meeting started) and why not?.
11.) How did she exit? Why did she not call for help? Who saw her leaving?
12.) Was the "murder weapon" located (if it was a murder: Deep cut on the head)?
13.) Was there profuse bleeding in the hotel room (expected from ahead injury that could lead to death from Brain hemorrhage?).
14.) Analysis of "depth and shape" of the wound should give us a 'profile' of what caused the injury: sharp? Blunt? Flat? It will also tell-us his position at point of contact: Sleeping (doing his jiggida!)? Standing or sitting (in argument or blissful sleep)?
15.) Given that the room may have been "re-arranged" afterwards but forensic analysis would certainly expose these amateurs (finger print, saliva, vaginal swab on his penis for DNA analysis.....if he had sex prior! Hair DNA from strands lying about the bedsheets )...

I can go-on and on till tomorrow........enough leads to nail and close the case.
But if the "Objective is NOT TO CATCH THE CULPRIT(S)" then l am better-off just reading a novel :D

What we MUST never do is to assume and cast aspersion or to just insult the dead man simply because he was our "political enemy". Tomorrow, it will likely be YOUR turn
MURDER IS MURDER and we have a dead Body !

The authur of this piece based his write-up on fragmentary press reports on the death of Edo State commissioner of Information.Press men were not allowed to see the dead body of the commissioner. The car he drove to the hotel was said to be an official car as he had earlier sent his driver away for the day.
Nigeria is a country where morals do not play any role in the election or appointment of public officers.I consider it a great height of irresponsibility for a serving commissioner to leave his family at 10 pm at night without his guard and without having any official engagement or social function to attend but at the instance of a phone call from a lady. Was the late commissioner phone put on speaker? Who was with him and heard that it was a lady that called him?Booking into a hotel with a fake name is on its own criminal especially for a highly placed office holder as a commissioner.
Some years ago, a local government chairman in Edo state was shot at night too though he died after some days in the hospital. It was then rumoured that it was a rival over a lady that mansterminded the murder."Jezebel", even biblically did not murder rather, she organised murder. While I sypathise with the family of the late commissioner, it is time Nigerians knew that as peaceful as Sweden, not having an escort has cost that country a prime minister and a minister for foreign affiars not to talk of Nigeria that is infested with herdened criminals.
To put some points straight;some persons were charged for the murder of Late Geroge Idah but they were discharged for wants of evidence.

Let me help with some more unresolved cases, Ayo Daramola, Aminoasari Dikibo, Udo Marcus Akpan and his body guard, Pa Alfred Rewane, Sadatu Abubakar Rimi, Suliat Adedeji, Godwin Agbroko, Uche Ogbonnaya, Peter Eboigbe, Tunde Ashafa, Moses Edueche... and the list goes on and on.

It is said that a murder unresolved is an encouragement to the next assassin.

Assuming the late commissioner was assasinated as stories might have us believe, then we might as well shelve this discussion because in the history of Nigeria, no assasination has ever been resolved.

However, if what we have been told so far concerning the guys death is anything to go by, then I believe there are clues which can lead to the case being resolved.

While there he checked in as "Nosa Aliu" asking the hotel people never to disturb him in his suite. The late Commissioner was said to be a usual caller in the hotel with fake identity.

1. If he had always checked into that hotel with ficticious names, then he was a regular caller

2. If they (the hotel staff) knew he checked in with fake identities, then they obviously knew his real identity

3. During his frequent visits was he always alone, or in the company of people, and were they always the same set of people. While he was there that weekend did he receive any guest(s)?

4. I assume someone checked him in and there would definitely be staff of the hotel who recognised him as comm. for info. at least he must have been a popular face on Edo Broadcasting Corp. (I don't believe no staff in the whole of Precious Palm Royal Hotel knew Enoma was there)

5. Based on (2. and 4.) at the time he was declared missing publicly, did the hotel staff still carry on with the belief that Nosa Aliu was different from Calus Enoma?

6. Obviously he didn't tell anyone at home where he was going, was this a common trend with him or was he under pressure of blackmail of some sort?

7. Where is the cell phone with which he received the call that prompted him to leave home. Was it found or stolen? Whether it was found or not, the GSM operator should be able to furnish the police with his call log, so as to establish some hypotheses.

8. Finally, what did the post-mortem report say?

Even without a basic course in criminology any fool can ask these questions and attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding the man's death but I guess the case is gone the way of the others before it, to the trash can!

Is it also the culture of this 'prestigious' hotel to leave their guest room unkempt for three (3) days?! Disturbance or no disturbance notwithstanding?

Quick question for the writer: Is this right-up meant to be a journalistic piece or advertisement for his political camp and against the 'enemy' camp? If it is meant to be journalistic, I thought the words 'investigative' 'disclaimer' 'hearsay' 'reportedly' and so on are supposed to be alive and vibrant? If i am wrong, please correct me!

In the meantime lets do like our people say, 'One should chase away the fox first before one apportion a blame to the chicken'. Lets be sure there are no hanky-panky involved before we hang the dead man for his infidelity. Who told you the Jezebel couldn't have been the 'secretary' of one big oga whose call the dead commissioner must answer to pronto? or a supposedly the room a rendezvous for a meeting (I wonder why politician meets after midnight - Are there doings dark as the night?)

Thanks for all the suggestions here. If the investigative officer(s) thoroughly pursues issues raised here I am sure the jinx of inability to unravel these types of homicide/suicide/accident? deaths should come to an end.

FALSE.

Someone just last month confessed to killing Agu iyi Ironsi.

10pm, Politician, hotel room, fake name,My greyhound can solve this case if I let him sleep on my italian leather sofa and watch AC360 on mute volume.
