Witchcraft and the Impurities in the African Mind

Africa is an inimitable continent, rich in complexities and contradictions; rich in nature’s wonders, yet, filled with man-made miseries and fetidities. It is both rich and poor and is inhabited by people who are at once happy and miserable. The African life is pulled and pushed and contradicted by different poles: primeval sentiments, superstition, religion, culture, and modernity. The biggest challenge, of course, is the morbidly superstitious life fueled by poverty and ignorance.

Superstition, poverty and ignorance accounts for why, many decades after most societies have progressed, the African life is still loaded with primitive passions and preliterate conditions. Kenyans and Nigerians recently demonstrated their primitiveness. On April 22, 2008, the Reuters news service reported that the Kenyan Police “jailed 19 people suspected of burning to death 11 elderly Kenyan men and women accused of being witches in a case that has horrified the east African nation…A mob in the Kisii area of west Kenya went from house-to-house identifying people on a list and burning them to death in their homes.” In a similar incident in 1983, “eight elderly people from Kisii were also accused of witchcraft and burned to death in their huts by a mob.”

Responding to the dastardly event in Kenya , Samira Edi wrote: “This is manifestly a remnant of a gory past…which preys on the gullible minds, the primitive instincts of the emotionally vulnerable, the unsure, the challenged, the weak, the easily manipulated, the insecure… With certain mystical beliefs, Africans are hunkering in the bunker, offering themselves up to be brainwashed, in the monumental mistaken belief that through some cryptic power of black magic or other mystical forces, they could influence situations and things around them….And they all come crawling out; the dark deeds of the devil -- voodoo, witchcraft, ritual killings, exorcism, barbarism, hallucination…”

A month after the sad and regrettable event in Kenya , the Vanguard Newspaper (May 22, 2008) reported that “a cat allegedly turned into a middle-aged woman after being hit by a commercial motorcycle… One of them, it was learnt, was able to escape while the third one was beaten to death, still as a cat though.” An innocent woman, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a citizen of Nigeria was beaten to death in the presence of a crowd, and no one was decent enough to stop the murder, to stop the barbarity. But of course these types of events are very rampant in Nigeria -- a country rife with phantasms and mass hysterias induced by tales of the missing penis, missing scrotums, missing breasts, shrinking brains, and witchcraft lore.

There are several interpretations of witchcraft. Used in different context in different societies and in different era, it could mean a number of things. In general however, witchcraft is associated with the supernatural, with magic and with evil deeds. There are historical testaments of witchcraft in all societies, one of the most famous being the Salem Witch Trials in Salem , Massachusetts , in 1692.  About three dozen innocent people were killed and hundreds more suffered unimaginable indignity.  But more than any society in the world, the Africa society and belief system is excessively rife with such belief. Even though such beliefs are dying out in most societies, it continues to thrive and assume epic proportion in the African continent.

In Nigeria for instance, the incidence, accusations and extrajudicial sanctions against supposed witches are routine. And no where is this more so than in the Niger Delta region where kids as young as 10, and even younger, are ostracized or killed on mere suspicion. Widows are sometimes accused of witchcraft in cases where their husbands suffered sudden or unexplainable death. In this part of Nigeria , tragedies and misfortunes that are beyond the consciousness or comprehension of the natives are mostly credited to witches. It doesn’t matter the level of education, virtually all the inhabitants of the Niger Delta share in this belief: what cannot be explained, is caused by witches.

Amongst the Ijaw ethnic group, the cost and implication of witchery are expensive. For instance, the so-called witches are generally never accorded the dignity of land burial as their remains are usually thrown into the river.  It is therefore not uncommon to find corpses floating in the rivers and Ijaw waterways. The children and immediate family members also suffer from public ridicule and suspicion; they may be maligned, shunned and disassociated from village events. To be thought of as the children of a witch carries heavy penalty. The villagers may wonder if (even you) have been “infected and afflicted” and have the power to do them in.

Belief in witchcraft and all such phenomenon is a product of deep-seated fear, ignorance, backwardness, illiteracy of the mind, gullibility, self-loathe and an inability or refusal to take responsibility for ones stupidity, failings and shortcomings. The rest of Nigeria is not different in this regard: if your car malfunctions, you blame the witch; if you have heart attack or stroke or other medical conditions, you blame your father’s second or third wife; if you do poorly in school or if you are denied admission to the school of your choice, you blame the woman down the road. Witches are to be blamed for everything!

According to Tracy McVeigh of the Guardian (UK),  “Evangelical pastors are helping to create a terrible new campaign of violence against young Nigerians. Children and babies branded as evil are being abused, abandoned and even murdered while the preachers make money out of the fear of their parents and their communities.” Indeed, pastors have now taken the leading role in pointing accusatory fingers at the innocent. The white-garment Churches are especially notorious for these. One wonder how many men and women -- especially women -- have been accused of evil, and who forever lived a lonely and dejected life? Even in death, they are slandered. For generation thereafter, their children and grandchildren may even suffer from such lies and hate.

There are several ironies to the belief in witchcraft; one being that even among the western educated Africans, there is a widespread belief in the omnipresence and omnipotence of witches. There are Africans, who, even with advanced degrees in science and technology and with residence in the US or other western countries they still belief in witchcraft, voodoo and other so-called supernatural entities. Perhaps there is something about the African mind that makes it difficult to wipe it clean of impurities. “In the Middle Ages people were convinced there were witches. They looked for them and they certainly found them.” Today, Africans are still looking and finding and burning them.

What happened in Kisii ( Kenya ) and in Port Harcourt ( Nigeria ) was nothing short of murder. Innocent men and women were killed. A proper examination of events will reveal that those responsible for the deaths reveled in the outcomes. They killed as a matter of routine. They killed without regards for decency and for human life. How sad! Sadder still is the fact that none of the killers will ever be brought to justice. The larger community will do nothing about it, and neither will the government. Such insouciance is a staple of the African society -- a society where human life is cheaper than a cow. And of course, such and similar killings will happen again and again and again. From Sudan to South Africa , and from Senegal to Tanzania , it happens on a daily basis.

So you have not seen the film 'The Exorcist'? You have never read the Bible? You have never heard of the devil and his works?

I absolutely diasagree with your little piece of thoughts about Witchcraft and Impurities in African's Minds, i think you are absolutely ignorant about what you've written about
(There's nothing more terryfying than ignorance in Action).Goethe

The Witchcrafts turned cats deserved nothing less than been beaten to death after confessing the distardly calamities they've sparked.

Infact those scientists, doctors, technologists and so on who believe in witchcraft;s existence are not to blame at all, ( Once beaten forever shy).

I think you only need to be beaten once by a small witchcraft before you wake up from your ignorant mode...

Wake up Bruv....

You have your facts wrong Sabella, the cat-woman in Port Harcourt was not beaten to death....she was beaten and then taken to a police station somewhere around Elekahia. Besides, lots of people saw this incident take place. 3 cats were running across the road and the last one got hit by a car and changed to a woman. She confessed that they were on the way to the hospital to kill people! It is not the 1st time this has happened in Port Harcourt. About 6 years ago...it was a goat that changed into a woman at Water Lines.

I asked before why the people do not turn into more practical things like cows, goats, turkey, chicken, bags of rice or garri or beans.

I do know that a few years ago some old women in my village confessed they were witches and called the names of those they had murdered as witches.I wasn't there but it was a big deal in the village then as people came over to listen.I think the confession brought some closure to those who had lost family members.I don't remember what happened to the alleged witches.

Not too long ago-in my village-people suspected of witchcraft and sundry evil were chased out of the village. The mob was led by a young lady who claimed to receive visions that showed her who the evil doers were.Certain areas in the compounds of such people were dug up and certain incriminating evidence found. Most were beaten as they were run out of town.I was only suprised that people could be run out of town in the 21st century,I had thought that only happened in the times 'Things Fall Apart'

My own problem with Sabella's article is that he made it seem like witchcraft and belief in it are an exclusive preserve of the African mind.It ain't so.Loup-garou and Voodoo dolls are common beliefs and fearsome realities for some people even in today's Oyiboland.

Hello Alexa,
The fifth paragraph of my essay reads: “There are several interpretations of witchcraft. Used in different context in different societies and in different era, it could mean a number of things…There are historical testaments of witchcraft in all societies, one of the most famous being the Salem Witch Trials in Salem , Massachusetts…But more than any society in the world, the Africa society and belief system is excessively rife with such belief. Even though such beliefs are dying out in most societies, it continues to thrive and assume epic proportion in the African continent.”

Now, if I made it sound as you claimed, then, the fault is mine. I should have been more sensitive to the fact that I could be misread. With that in mind, I will take full responsibility for not being clearer. Thank you.

Hello Izonere,
Thanks for your comment. I merely paraphrased what Vanguard reported. I went back to look at the report… I got it right; but if eye-witnesses say otherwise, then…

Hello Truthsayer33:
How now? How bodi? Well, I saw the movie a very long time ago. I thought it was just what it was: tory! As for the Bible, well, millions of people around the world believe it 100%, as for me, well…na tory!

Hello Ikoyiesho1:
Nna, you make me laugh oooooooooo. Sha, nothing spoil. We are all entitled to our level of consciousness, no be so? Na so ooooooooooo. Have a great week ahead.

...Maybe I am not well travelled to know what the oyinbo beliefs are on witchcraft...but I can tell you it is alarming the way witchcraft is seen today in Nigeria.! Like the writer rightly said
...if your car breaks down....its that witch around the corner.
...if your football team looses a match its because a black donkey was buried in the goal post
...if you loose your job its because your step sister/brother/mother/father that does not want you to succeed
...if you dont read and you fail your exams it is somebody that does not want you to succeed!
...If you ate too much the previous night and had a bad dream and woke up with constipation ..witch dey follow you...
...people die no autopsy is conducted the next thing you hear is that "the wife killed him ( find out you will and see that the wife solely depends on the man for practically everything..so why would she kill him?)

... if you travel to the village you are warned never to tell anyone in the village when you are travelling back..reason? witch and wizards!
...
...you go to church all you hear are people praying against witches and wizards...in church!

The God I know is all powerful! i shall not fear any!..FAITH!

Is it ever posible for a man made by God to turn into another beautiful creation of God? is there any such record anywhere in the world where a specie of an animal turned into another animal or into a plant? How is it posible for one to say a cat turned into a woman or a woman turned into cat? infact for the size sef? may be if man turns into a gorilla..well there are some resemblance in size and beauty! but a cat?

Someone should muster courage find the Okada man...the only witness there whose name is just Paul said something contradicting about the presence of blood on the accident spot! shouldnt that say something

The Nigerian police rescued the woman and took her to a private hospital? in Nigeria? in Niger Delta? Someting just doesnt add up!

In as much I am want to belief they exist but in that magnitude...and I am sure they operate in their own world but not have the power to turn into other animal species...
that is absolute rubbish!

There is no such thing as witchcraft and the graveyards are unfortunately full of innocents (at least of having supernatural powers), sadly even though no one has seen first hand these wondrous sights they believe them explicitly (if you asked those eyewitnesses to be honest they will all admit to coming after the fact but then there was someone else who saw it all) and just a couple of anecdotal events that i am sure we all can relate to
1: i have an uncle who was losing weight and slowly dying and even though my brothers and i adviced a medical review instead they went to "find out" and triumphantly came to let us know they had gotten to the root of the problem (this caused a great rift between my family and the family of the guilty party) however soon after he collapsed and was rushed to UNTH where he was diagnosed with spinal Tuberculosis and improvement was truely miraculous once treatment commenced (rediculously some of my relative still hold onto the "jazz" line - afterall "they can send TB to you by remote control)
2: While i was in school in Idi Araba my roommate was a witness of a near lynching when a man raised the alarm that his "GBOLA" had disappeared, without much ado the culprit was descended upon and was only saved when the police intervened, however due to the heightened tension the police asked the victim to descretely show evidence of the crime it had miraculously reappeared though he claimed it was not his own as his was bigger than the one he now had

Ps i still have my challenge to any jazzmen out there send me (or anyone of your choosing )something by remote control - let me or someone else know the expected outcome that way you do not take credit for my driving off a cliff or developing cancer - i will become a believer (and for those who will start quoting the bible as evidence of POWERS there is no such thing as god, devil, principalities (unless you are thinking of Monaco) demons etc etc, simply put there is nothing supernatural just stuff we do not understand/ cannot explain yet)

Sabella,

Thank you for this exceptional piece. If not for the fact that my mind is already liberated I may as well termed you to be a witch because of the way you spoke out my mind.
What you wrote is 100% what I was talking about to a group of friends in this past week. Thanks!
Stupidity, wickedness and pure ignorance are few of the reasons behind the idea of witches. There is nothing like it. It is myth!
The most unfortunate thing is that our well educated folks and Pentecostal pastors/members are active participants in the primitive and barbaric nonsense.
Not that they are just mere participants;they as well helped a lot in packaging them out to uninformed minds.
A person was born deformed. What have witches got to do with it? Deformity is common all over the world even in places where there is no withcraft notion.
A man died of highblood presure. What has the witch got to do with it? Highblood presure is a common human ailment all over the world.
Somebody's car malfunctioned and stopped him on the highway.Any engine made by human being can develop problem for several reasons. Yet poor sick misguided minds would paint it as being the work of witches. Absolutely any misfortune or sudden death are fingered as the work of the devil or his so called agent.
In early 80s, when in Ibadan,Ogunpa river with a history of flooding again flooded as it did in the 50s; it was widely believed that evil spirits were behind it.
Some Ibadan traditionalists asked the Governor,{late Bola Ige}for a sizeable amount of money for the purpose of making sacrifices to the spirits so that the flooding may not continue.
He did not give them the money.Instead, Bola Ige used modern way of controlling the flood. Myth!
This topic might briefly bring us back to the issue of God.
If in truth there are witches that are causing pains, hardships etc on people who are supposed to be creations of God and who are also His children according to Holy Bible;then what is God doing to protect His own? Why did He allow those witches' attrocities to be visited on the people He created? Why are evil spirits allowed to be roaming around freely without being stopped or destroyed instantly by God so that those he created to worship or serve Him may be doing so without pain, anguish and distraction?
There are too many lies, too many myths, too many wickedness going on in this world. How can this bunch of useless nonsense be stopped and lives of innocent victims be saved?
While in secondary school,I was playing in the school's first team. My school qualified for the Finals of Provincial Cup.We were to meet with another school that must be considered as a better team but whom we refused to acknowledge as superior to us because it was widely believed that they were playing with the aid of juju.
Our Gamemaster therefore decided to meet them on their own term. He consulted the town's elders. He told them of how important the final game is and how it is of great importance that we should win the provincial cup for the glory of the town.
The elders in turn consulted the chief juju priest. On the mornig of the finals before we travelled out to the venue of the game about 30miles away,we of the first team were all taken secretly to the house of the juju priest and were all warned seriously by the gamemaster not to let the school's Pricipal who is a British know about our coming to the juju house.
We were instructed few days ago that all of us players must get a new haircut a day before the match. We all did.
At the juju priest's house;seven incissions were made on our center head and brown stuff was rubbed against them. Our legs were washed inside a large pot with black coloured water. Our legs were then rubbed with another greasy item. Finally a black stuff was poured on our palms. We were instructed to use our tongues to lick it up."It is done. You've won", the priest loudly proclaimed.
Several hours later, precisely at 4.45pm,the game started. We put out our best efforts,so did the other team but,we lost to the better team, juju or no juju.We lost 2-0.
I did not feel the presence of any kind of juju in me while the contest was on.My ball control was not any better than usual and my speed was not any faster than usual. My body and my performances were just as usual except that we as a team made frantic efforts.
I later on asked my teamates about how did they feel during the match, whether they experienced anything rather extraordinary that may be linked to the working of the juju. Like myself, none felt anything different within them.We all agreed that it was not that the opposing team have all along be playing with juju.
Maybe if a woman had jokingly said it that we shall be defeated, she might be pronounced a witch and be hacked to death.
Who or what shall deliver us from the grip of myths and traditional lies and ignorance and wickedness etc. God, where art thou?

In this day of internet and all the other developments taking place around us, most Nigerians including the educated ones, still strongly believe in witchcraft. Superstition and ignorance are factors but I think the worst culprits are the 'Pastors, Bishops, General Overseers, Primates, Prophets, Mothers in Israel etc' who promotes the concept in their various churches as a means of keeping their members imprisoned. If the members are not made to believe their problems are caused by 'enemies' and not by their stupidity or as a natural sequence of events, they will stop coming to church, stop paying their tithe (very important:D:D:D), consulting the Pastors on every issue including the number of times they could sleep with their wives:eek::eek::eek:.

Just check out the posters for various crusades of the churches and you will understand why the issue of witchcraft will never die down in Nigeria until the economy improves. The idleness promoted by unemployment is giving Nigierans too much time to dwell on mundane issues while other nations are moving full steam ahead of us.

Check out the stage-managed confessions (chief of witches causing accidents and eating babies for breakfast, lunch and dinner and going to the bottom of the ocean for meetings) being sold on CDs and VCDs and the millions of naira people are making from it and you will also understand that it is a big market and a win-win situation for the promoters and a lose-lose situation for those who believe in witchcraft.
As some contributors to this post had mentioned, all issues are attributed to witches and wizards. If you are not able to 'bulala' your wife properly in bed, it is the witches and not due to stress or your drinking too much beer before retiring to bed. If you have a bad dream, not promoted fast enough in your workplace (Maybe you don't deserve to be promoted) or your tokunbo car is constantly overheating, then the witches are at work.

The women are the worst victims of this paranoia. If a man suddenly dies (All die suddenly since death never announces when it will come for you) of heart attack, his wife is accused of 'killing him' even though, she has more to gain if the man remains alive (It does not matter if the man had been courting death by being careless with his health and well-being for years). No member of the man's family would suggest an autopsy because a convenient scapegoat is available in his wife. Accusing her of witchcraft makes it easy for the family to take over the properties of the deceased. Until the government comes out strongly to ban all the rubbish, it will persist. If the government could ban the broadcast of the "miracles" being performed by the evangelical churches, why not ban them from promoting paranoia?
