The Prince Of Peace PDF Print E-mail
By Pius Adesanmi

No, I am not talking about the son of a Nazarene carpenter called Joseph. I am talking about Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the Governor of Osun state, who now seems determined to outdo Mary’s famous son in the peace department. It is beginning to look like “the dividends of democracy” for the people of Osun state lies in their ability to boast that the do-or-die selection methods of the PDP have transformed them into privileged recipients of a deputy Jesus Christ in the person of Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Nigeria’s most prolific peace maker.

First was the peace accord he brokered between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his estranged former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. Then the Prince of Peace was off to Minna for a peace treaty between General Ibrahim Babangida and his would-be nemesis, Major Saliba Mukoro, leader and mastermind of the April 22, 1990 Orkar coup. Off to Ibadan, where the Prince of Peace sealed yet another peace deal between Olusegun Obasanjo and former Oyo state governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja.

As long as the people of Osun state are cool with it, there is nothing wrong with Prince Oyinlola rolling from state to state to gather the moss of peace treaties even as governance in his domain goes the way of everything the PDP touches: failure. What we, the Nigerian people, need to resist are the surreptitious registers of canonization and the well-choreographed modes of aggrandizement that our emergency troubadours of peace are foisting on the national space of meaning. There is such a thing as speaking for a nation’s past and her present. The catch always lies in who gets to speak for a nation’s past and present – the people or their traducers in the political elite.

Olagunsoye Oyinlola and his fellow jokers in the emergent peace industry are attempting to speak for our past and present in order to smuggle their rickety legacy into our future. If in doubt, examine their vocabulary. Oyinlola declared that kissing and making up by Obasanjo and Atiku was the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria. The occasion was “historic”, “epochal”, and deserving of every grandiose and delusional adjective that Oyinlola could fish from the dictionary. The reconciliation between Ibrahim Babangida and Major Mukoro was also described as “historic”. Oyinlola even allowed himself some effusive extra mileage in hyperbole: the reconciliation of the coupists will allow Oyinlola to “move the country forward.” The same canonizing vocabulary was at work as our friends came out of the Ibadan peace meeting between Obasanjo, Rashidi Ladoja, Alao Akala, and the Prince of Peace.

There is nothing new in Oyinlola’s adventures. Politicians constantly redraw the map of political alliances. Bruised egos deemed of continuous value to the perpetuation of group interest are soothed, old enemies fall into the bed of common interests, existing alliances are recalibrated even as new liaisons are formed towards winning elections (if you are in the civilized world) or capturing power (if you are in Nigeria). What is insufferable is the presumptuousness that has led Oyinlola to elevate moves calculated to earn him some national presence in furtherance of future ambitions, and to give a semblance of continuous relevance to the likes of Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, to the status of historic national moments.

The ease with which members of Nigeria’s lootocracy equate their inconsequential shenanigans with our destiny is a clear indication of how low our stock has fallen as a people. Our rulers are perpetually insulting us. One minute Dimeji Bankole is canonizing himself a leader; the next minute Oyinlola is decreeing what is historic. It is particularly annoying that Babangida’s mini-Robespierran ego gets equated with our history and destiny at every opportunity. Two coupists meet to drink beer in Minna and that is an “historic” act that will “move Nigeria forward!” The only “historic” miss I see here is that Gideon Orkar, who remains a hero in my book, did not get Babangida.

There is no telling what next Oyinlola will declare historic. We are even getting dangerously close to a point where one of these charlatans ruling and ruining Nigeria will go to the toilet in the morning and declare that whatever he did therein to unburden his bowels is “historic”, “epochal”, and will “move Nigeria forward”. Olagunsoye Oyinlola should be advised to concentrate on what his political ilk does best – looting, rigging, electoral violence – and leave the determination of what is historic to the Nigerian people. They don’t get to define that.

Prof.,

I am glad you wrote on this farce. It is so annoying with this man Oyinlola, believing he's doing something good. What a shame! These people have no shame at all. As you wrote, I cringe at how low we have sunk as people when these deformed people are the ones controlling our destiny. Oh my!

I wish I could write like you do as this topic has been bugging me sine I read about it.

Thanks once again.

Ha Prof,

I couldn't stop laughing.

So Oyinlola's 'poo poo' would soon become historic in Naija. We are making progress in my country oo.

isnt it ironic, that our rulers have rubbed sooooooooooooooooooooo much salt into our injuries, that we would actually be tempted to remain oblivious to their offensive injuries to our common heritage, just so long as we can have peace from their continued and totally insensitive bragging on top of it all. kai. walahi.

i had to laugh, though it really isnt funny!!!!

Why have the Osun State people not demanded the immediate impeachment of this ego tourist of a governor?

Sometimes you have to give it to these Nigerian "leaders", they never come second in eloquent stupidity. They are always on top!

What a nation, what a way to "move a nation forward".

Speaking of "poo poo", was it not James Ibori who declared while he was in power that he could rule Delta state from his toilet when OBJ complained about junketing governors.

Facts cannot be denied!
There are crooks in all the States, therefore our Osun State is not left out of crooks, both in high places and other sectors of the State.
Not too long ago,few natives of Osun State made the news and up till today, people have not stopped talking about them.Surely they are crooks.
My homeboy and good friend Tafa Balogun came in first. We used to play football together and table tennis. He was a better player of table tennis than I. His older brother, Gani Balogun a.k.a "Balenga" was my senior in secondary school.
Tafa was a fine youngman then.I joined the Army long before he joined the Police.
Tafa rose to the rank of IG.
Facts cannot be denied.Tafa my old friend has changed from being a fine gentleman to a self-help Inspector General of Police. He surely helped himself a lot by looting about 16billion naira from the people of Nigeria.
Tafa is from our Osun State.
The people of Osun State must have rolled out the drums when their daughter,Olubunmi Etteh became the first female Speaker of the House.
The joy of our people did not last for too long when news came to them of how their daughter looted over 600 million naira in the name of house renovation. She was relieved of her post.
Olubunmi is from our Osun State.
Demonic Iyiola Omisore made goverance a hell for Bisi Akande before he was done away with.
Iyiola Omisore was a prime suspect in the brutal murder of Bola Ige,the man he hated with passion.
Iyiola was still in detention while election was conducted.Iyiola did not only win,the crook also "won" in Bola Ige's Esa-Oke constituency. Habba!
Could Ladoke Akintola have won an election in Obafemi Awolowo's Ikenne cosistuency? Will Yakubu Gowon be able to win an election in Emeka Ojukwu's Nnewi constituency? Pls,don't ask the sun to rise from the west.
Iyiola purportedly "won" though.
Iyiola is from Osun State.
He risked his life with his writings. He joined the progressive forces to fight the most notorious despot,Abacha. He narrowly escaped being captured or murdered.
He is also an ardent student of history. He really know his books. When the issue of who is pre-eminent,Oni of Ife or Oba of Benin came up,my friend went to work,he unearthed facts that cannot be denied by proving the pre-eminence of Oni of Ife.
He also unearthed facts about Awo's defeat of Zik in the 50s. He earned my respect and I listed him among my heroes.
But my one time idol and friend turned coat.He became something else at the expense of his long built reputations and scholarly writings.
My one time idol,Remi Oyeyemi who fought against barbaric despot and who taught Oba Erediuwa history lessons became mere hatchet writer. He deviated from unearthing facts into praising crooks. I denounced him.
Remi wrote and praised Iyiola Omisore. He praised Lamidi Adedibu. He praised the most unfortunate Governor of Osun State,Olagunsoye Oyinlola a.k.a Lagun.
Remi Oyeyemi is from our Osun State.
Time and space shall not permit me to talk about Sunday Afolabi and Ebenezer Babatope both hailed from Osun State.
Having talked briefly about those crooks, let me rush to the main topic that brought me in today, which is centered around the quasi peace maker who is also another certificated crook from our Osun State,Olagunsoye Oyinlola, our pathetic Governor.
It is amazing that Lagun{short for Olagunsoye} is attempting to be glamourous and would like people to see him as "peace maker" or "Prince of Peace" while he continues to fail so woefully at his legitimate job as the Governor.
What peace are we talking about here when Lagun's occupation of public office is characterised by the use of extreme violence, vote robbery and broad daylight banditry?
Lagun should not use the quasi peace making abracadabra to run away from the fact that he is dubiously occupying the office of Osun State Governor with a mandate that he stole twice. Firstly, from Bisi Akande and secondly, from Aregbesola.
Lagun's fingerprint remained idelible in the killings of several Osun State natives like,Saheed Adebiyi,Lawal Adesina,Samson Olanrewaju,Ayo Kemba etc.
Facts cannot be denied that Lagun is a tyranical despot with anti-democratic credentials.
His recent loudly broadcasted efforts at bringing together Obj and Atiku, then IBB and Mukoro should be seen as his personal run-arounds since he is not representing the intrest of Osun State people.
A good governor must see to it that he represents the intrest of his people.Nay,not Lagun.
Will bringing Obj and Atiku together put food on the table of hungry Osun State people? Will the coming together of IBB and Mukoro provide the much needed employments for Osun State's unemployed people?
Instead for Lagun to help his people he is helping outsiders to put an end to their differences. What are the people of Osun State going to gain from Lagun's foolishness of crosscountry races?
"Show me your friend and I will tell you what kind of person you are", is sayings of our elders.
Those of you who don't know Lagun before, should at least know much about him now that he keeps company with crooks among of which are Obj,Atiku,IBB etc.
Facts cannot be denied that Lagun is good for nothing other than to be hanged high and leave him hanging.
Obj and Atiku worked hand in hand to stampede the Southwest in 2003 thus displacing Bisi Akande and then criminally installed Lagun as our unfortunate Governor.
Obj and Atiku energized and equiped Lamidi Adedibu for his reign of terror in Oyo State.
Obj and Atiku did not do anything to remember MKO Abiola, neither did they help to lay June 12 to rest by bringing about justice on the sad issue.
But what is of much importance to Lagun is to bring these two crooks back together as friends. "Eyiti a ni ki okobo bo,ko le bo,o so wipe ile Oloja njo" - do the important thing that you are asked to do and leave alone what is less important that you are not asked to do.
Of course, they are his friends because they dubiously installed him in Osun State.
Lagun boasted that IBB is his friend and he is ready to follow him anywhere blindly. Ladies and gentlemen, pls hail the new "Follow Follow" cowboy that just rode into town.
Have you forgotten,Lagun, that IBB was the man who annulled the 1993 election that eventually brought huge hardships upon your own people - Yorubas?
Was the annulment not a slap on the face of your people and democracy too?
Abacha would not have risen unto power if your good friend did not anull the 1993 election.Several Yorubas would not have been killed while several were forced to go on exile during Abacha's reign of terror,if your friend whom you will gladly follow blindly did not do what he did.
No wonder then, that instead for Lagun to gracefully accept the fact that Aregbesola was the clear winner of the 2007 gubernatorial election in Osun State,he rolled out his terror machine and claimed an undeserved victory in the most callous way,in Obj's do or die system.
Since Lagun has coronated himself as "Prince of Peace",the question he must answer is this;when will he make peace with Aregbesola from whom he stole the people's mandate?
