Why does President Obasanjo get such bad press in Nigeria? Why? Despite all the reforms being undertaken by President Obasanjo’s administration, an administration that reflect Nigeria, an administration that is suffused with talented Nigerians, young and old, but seasoned world-savvy technocrats! Why is it, our current president never get credits for the successes of his sundry reform efforts? Why is it, that there is always some political motivation or ethnical motivation or third agenda motivation or some unexplainable motivation for everything our current president does?

Third Term Agenda; What Third Term? PDF Print E-mail
By Paul Adujie

Emphatically and unequivocally, President Obasanjo has repeatedly expressed his lack of interests in self-succession as events and all eyes turns toward the 2007 presidential elections in Nigeria.

Most unfortunately, however, some Nigerians have chosen to exhibit their happy ignorance of President Obasanjo’s clear and concise denunciations of the idea and the so-called brains behind the much speculated and much rumored about, non-event, called a third term agenda, rumors, fuelled by mischief makers.

First and foremost, it should be clear to Nigerians and the world, that President Obasanjo’s antecedents precludes the sort of character that enables and has in the past enabled some, to seek self-succession in political helms of affairs in Nigeria .

It must be recalled that it was this man, President Obasanjo, who willingly and voluntarily relinquished political power, even as a military head of the Nigeria state in 1979 to a democratically elected President Shagari

Unless you are a person or a Nigerian born after 1980, and you have a particular preference for ignoring the history books, as you enjoy your glorious self-inflicted amnesia, you would have to, have known, you would have, have to, have heard or read about President Obasanjo’s epoch making and ground breaking willful hand over of political power, even as a military man in 1979.

President Obsanjo’s act of voluntary hand over of power, from the military to a civilian president in Nigeria was unsurpassed demonstration of patriotism and commitment to Nigeria ’s national cause. And it was acclaimed and hailed as a first in Nigeria , Africa and most of the world!

It ought to be very clear to Nigerians and the world therefore, that the speculations and rumors of a planned self-succession by President Obasanjo, has no basis in fact or reality! It is falsehood, aimed at tarnishing and besmearing President Obasanjo’s exemplary service to Nigeria, at all levels, including as the time he served as a military head of state and now, as a civilian president. A civilian president, who has been laying foundations, institutions and systems which are dedicated in all ramifications to, and will sustain Nigeria, now and for a very long time to come.

Nigerians with a good memory of Nigerian history will tell you, that it is not in President Obasanjo’s DNA to plan self-succession in 2007. It is against our constitution, it is also against every moral fiber that constitutes President Obasanjo the man!

But why then, have the rumors and speculations gained such acceptance? Perhaps this is as a result of misperception or propaganda by enemies and detractors? And those who loathe the current reforms that has been initiated and instituted by President Obasanjo, such as the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Could this be because, there are some Nigerians and their cohorts, who benefited and seek to continue to benefit from the evils of corruption, regardless of corruption’s detriment to our common good in Nigeria ? There are some Nigerians who are unwilling to change from their old nefarious ways, and so, they seek to malign and lampoon President Obasanjo, the champion of the reform programs, hence these leeches and parasites, have constituted themselves into a cabal that continue to seek to destroy the President Obasanjo’s federal administration, all, in order for these enemies of Nigeria to be able to return to the old corrupt ways, corrupt way that benefited them and their friends, but at the expense of the generality of the citizens of Nigeria.

Regardless of region, religion or ethnicities, the average Nigerian is confronted daily with identical plight and predicament of desperations and hopelessness

Some Nigerians who now are quick to whip up ethnic, regional and religious sentiments, are the same Nigerians, who are quick to forget, that the several decades old abandonment, neglect and mammoth decadence and decay, suffered by public infrastructures in Nigeria, actually affected all Nigerians identically.

Whether such public infrastructures are roads, schools, hospitals etc, inefficiency and ineffectiveness knows no region, religion or ethnicities, corruption and criminal behaviors as it happens, have no ethnicities, religion and region.

But those who seek only selfish and parochial interests, are now whipping up these negative sentiments, a panoply of common denominator for some Nigerians, even in the face of evils, evils that ought to, and should be condemned by all, frequently, however, some seek to explain evil away, by presenting a façade, and cover for their own negative common denominator, that tend to bind some Nigerians, as opposed to the sustained pursuit of Nigeria’s national interests, as priority and foremost objective.

It has been quite clear that President Obasanjo does not intend to engage in any self-succession activities, he has on several occasions, vehemently rejected it, he stridently denied it, he has stated that there is no third term ambition on his part. President Obasanjo has been unequivocal and emphatic on this matter of his lack of desire for self-succession and yet the unsavory rumor of it persists! Even though so, he is on record as haven publicly stated that he was looking forward to his retirement to his Otta Farm, as he said something to the effect that he missed his stay in the farms, upon which commentators and cartoonists, joked and derided him, with swipes and snide remarks regarding his plans to retire and return to his “chickens” or “birds” etc

At other times, I recalled clearly, when the president had again, restated the absence of desire on his part to seek extension of his final tenure, which ends in 2007, he emphasized that point, when he said, anyone engaged in such third term project, was doing so, at their own peril, and further, that such persons were surely, on their own! For the purpose of mischief making, for the purpose of causing chaos and distraction from Nigeria ’s national interests and purpose, this garbage about third term agenda has been recycled ad nauseam!

Every efforts by President Obasanjo to deflated the rumors and speculations about this phantom third term agenda is completely ignored, and in fact, the greater the efforts in this regard that has been made by the president, the more redoubled the efforts on the part of the rumor mongers and mischief makers, who have been busy, spreading the falsehoods against President Obasanjo.

There is now, a new twist! As it has become obvious that President Obasanjo has no third term agenda whatsoever, his political enemies have changed and embellish the third term rumor to include, something like, if President is not scheming for a third term, it must be because of the welter of opposition that the mention of a third term agenda has received. Oh, it must be because of the resistance and vociferous oppositions from power individuals, organizations, political blocs, and it must be because America and Europe are not supportive etc. What hogwash!

There have been all sorts of orchestrated efforts by political enemies and those, who no longer have access to political power and spoils of office of old corrupt way of life, they are seething with rage and so, they have set themselves the task of denigrating and disparaging President Obasanjo. These cabal who are uninterested in Nigeria ’s national interests, have aggressively sought to drag President Obasanjo’s good name, integrity, good character and credibility to the mud. All, in order to blindfold the average Nigerian, blindfold Nigerians into thinking that the problem with Nigeria is the president himself, a man who is known to have dedicated himself to the cause of Nigeria , 18 hours a day. Why does President Obasanjo get such bad press in Nigeria ?

President Obasanjo has said it himself, that he will not be blackmailed or intimidated away from the task of continuing and sustaining the direly needed reforms in Nigeria. He has said that he will not falter, fail or be cowed by those who are apparently not focused on our national interests.

May providence and God protect and preserve President Obasanjo and Nigeria

Paul, you DSOS, where is the electricity, where are the roads, where is portable water, where are the Hospitals and the schools?. We just need basic necesssities, S I M P L E , simple necessities of life; any sane Government's first responsibility to it's people, before you start talking reforms. These will help MAGNIFY one reform 100 times. If he's made any reforms we don't see it because he's NOT responding to the needs of the people. What he has NOT DONE is killing whatever success that you his praise-singer cannot even pinpoint. Who's going to uphold the stupid reforms, dead people? What should be his priorities, reforms or people?

HE started the third term rumor mill in Germany, repeated it on BBC; allowed Gana and Madueke to smuggle that new Constitution into the Confab, then theres's the #70 million bribe. And OBJoke has made no great efforts to either call his men to order or distance himself from those supporting this brazen robbery. For someone claiming to fight corruption he's just adding to his opponents' armamentarium against himself. Can't get any more stupid than that. He caused it, let him douse the flame.

If the constitution is trully being reviewed and redrafted, yes this rumor(?) is a distraction, in light of the Comminique from the Southern leaders. But then these legislooters are just that, a band of thieves and robbers, so I wouldn't stake my life on their draft.

Your oga is a failure, another DSOS. You people are on your own, and posterity will judge this most foolish of foolish men. This yeye olodo has killed a golden opportunity. What a waste!.

Dear Brother Paul:
The problem with Obasanjo is actually Obasanjo himself. Look, with Ibrahim Babangida, you knew he would or could change his mind at any moment; you knew he had no scruples; you knew he was a man bent on polluting the air and distorting the system. But then, may be not because he was chameleonic. He toyed with the nation and with people's mind. He himself knew he was not to be trusted and never asked anyone to trust him.

With Sani Abacha, well, there were no two-ways about him. He was honest with himself and with the country and his opponents. He will let you know his plans and intensions. He was a "straight-shooter" and never had public pretensions. He was whom he claimed to be. Nothing more, nothing less. Till the end...he was evil; a depraved human being.

But with Olusegun Obasanjo, my goodness...he is a different breed. It is very hard to trust or to like him. He claims to be this when he is actually that; he acts as though he would do A when in actuality he meant to do C; he claims to be a democrat when he is actually a tyrant; he speaks about law and order and then breaks the law or allow his cronies to break the law; and he is very selective in who he brings to justice.

He says he is not interested in a third-term, but he has been acting and allowing some people and some groups to beat the third-term-drums for him. In fact, he is acting like a man who is interested in perpetuating himself in power. Left to Obasanjo and the yeye Parliament we have, the constitution would be tampered with to allow perpetual reign. Truth be told, Obasanjo is not beneath instigating instability so he can continue in Aso Rock...or encourage the military to come in.

Pick any five sector of the economy -- health, education, agriculture, road and infrastructural development, water supply, etc, etc -- what has he done? What are his achievements. The man is a fraud and so is his government and his political party, the PDP. Someone should calculate how much he and his office has spent junketting the globe. It will be proven that the amount is more than enough to retore IGBOBI, LUTH, UI and other teaching hospitals.

Under Obasanjo Chris Uba became a minigod and almost brought Anambra State and the governor down. Under Obasanjo, Adedibu sacked a legally constituted government in Oyo State. Under Obasanjo, Dariye peed on the police. Under Obasanjo the incidence of oil bunkering by foreigners has gone up substantially thereby depriving the nation of some revenue.

Under Obasanjo our educational and health system became a joke. Obasanjo has created more problems for our country than any other government in the history of Nigeria. Look, the Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese, Lebanese and others are running around sticking their middle fingers in our noses -- as if the Americans and the British and the Germans have not exploited us enough. What nonsense!

The man is beyond incompetent! And you wonder why the vast majority of Nigerians don't like him or believe his words? The man gets bad press because he is bad! Thank heavens, 2007 is just around the corner.

30 Govs Endorse 3rd Term
Houses of Assembly to ratify amendments same day, same time
By Bolaji Adebiyi, 12.24.2005

The speculated third term bid of President Olusegun Obasanjo may have received a boost with 30 of the 36 state governors signing to support a constitutional amendment that will allow the President and state governors to serve three terms of four years each.
By sections 137 (b) and 182 (b) of the 1999 Constitution, the Presi-dent and the governor of a state are eligible for election into office for only two terms of four years each. Only legislators do not have a constitutional barrier to the number of tenure they could serve.
These two sections are what the 30 governors have agreed to amend to pave the way for the President’s quest for another term of four years.

As part of the agreement at series of meetings, the governors agreed to deliver the support of their representatives in the National Assembly for the project. They also pledged to deliver their Houses of Asse-mbly for the project that had drawn massive opposition from a cynical public, which believed that the Obasanjo administration’s policies had brought more pains than joy to the generality of the people.

According to THISDAY information, the governors that are queuing behind the extra term project are Obong Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom), Do-nald Duke (Cross River), Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers), Chief James Ibori (Delta), Chief Lucky Igbin-edion (Edo), Chief Achike Udenwa (Imo), Dr. Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Senator Rashidi Ladoja (Oyo), Prince Olagu-nsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Dr. Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Dr. Olusegun Agagu (Ondo), Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Alhaji Ahmed Kure (Niger), Alhaji Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Alhaji Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto), Alhaji Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Alhaji Adamu Mu`azu (Bauchi), Chief Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Chief George Akume (Benue), Alhaji Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Dr. Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Rev. Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Senator Modu Sheriff (Borno), Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe), Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa), Alhaji Yar`Adua (Katsina) and Dr. Jonathan Goodluck (Bayelsa).

Six of their colleagues, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (Lagos), Dr. Chris Ngige (Ananmbra), Chief Orji Kalu (Abia), Mr. Boni Haruna (Adamawa), Alhaji Shekarau (Kano) and Alhaji Ahmed Sani (Zamfara), are, however, opposed to the move.

For the opposing governors, the move to ratify an extra term for the executive arm of government is an immoral act that threatens to undermine the nation’s quest for the strengthening of its democratic culture and institutions.

Also opposing the proposal according to THISDAY information are many members of the National Assembly, especially senators, some of who will have their governorship amb-itions eclipsed by the constitutional amen-dment that will permit sitting governors to have another shot at the coveted seats at the states.

But the pro-third term governors would not be deterred by their dissenting colleagues reservations as they set up committees to facilitate the passage of the constitutional amendment, which is planed to be passed by the 36 state Houses of Assembly simultaneously on the same day and at the same time.

The simultaneous passage of the amendment, THISDAY gathered, will whittle down the effect of the opposition from the North, some of which governors had vehemently opposed the third term project.

It is, however, not clear if the National Assembly will also sit to ratify the amendment on the same day with the state Houses of Assembly.

According to THISDAY information, three main committees have been constituted to facilitate the actualisation of the project. They are the Contact Committee, headed by Governor Adamu Mu’azu of Bauchi State, Finance Committee, led by Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State and the Central Planning Committee with Dr. Peter Odili (Rivers) and Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi (Nas-arawa) as the lichpins.

It was gathered that following the series of meetings and contacts including a sub-meeting in Enugu, the number of state chief executives that have so far lined up behind the bid number 30.

The major source of funding, as gathered by THISDAY, is corporate Nigeria expected to be anchored by the Managing Director of Nigeria Brewery Plc., Chief Festus Odim-egwu. Also, a leading bank in the country is expected to provide logistics for the project. In addition to funds to be provided by corporate Nigeria and the leading bank, there is information that money is being “extorted” from corporate organisations and individuals to swell the war chest of the project.

As part of the efforts to actualise the project, compromises and realignments of political forces had to be done. For instance, governors who on account of their support for Vice President Atiku Abub-akar, and their opposition to the project had been harassed by the Federal Gover-nment’s anti crime and corruption agencies, would be left off the hook.
In this group is Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State and Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State. Dariye who has been hounded by the Econ-omic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and is being investigated by the state House of Assembly for indictment fueled by the EFCC, may regain his rest of mind as the commission has been reportedly asked to remove the noose around the governor’s neck.

Also to benefit from the wisdom in supporting the extra term project, is Ladoja who has been having a hard time with his political godfather, Chief Lamidi Adedibu. Only on Thursday, for five hours there was a gun battle between his and the godfather’s supporters in Ibadan in a bid by 18 pro-Adedibu lawmakers to consumate the impea-chment process against him. With his new-found support for the extra term project, Ladoja is to enjoy a reprieve as the Federal Government, is by a special pact with the governor, to withdraw its subsidies to the opposition group that have been terrorising him and have made his state ungovernable.

THISDAY information also shows that Vice President Atiku may end the major loser in the power game and calculus as Governors Mu’azu and Ahmed Markarfi of Kaduna State, and Deputy Senate President Ibra-him Mantu have been penciled down as his successor.
The third term agenda has been in the public domain in the past few months with many public policy analysts and social critics opposing it as an unfortunate symptom of the African leadership malaise of sitting tight in office.

Individuals who have spoken publicly against the bid include Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, the stormy petrel of Lagos Bar, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses, John Onay-eikan. Others are the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the 2003 general election, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Bu-hari and the Speaker of the House of Represen-tatives, Alhaji Aminu Masari.

Also on the queue against the extra term bid are such political organisations as the Arewa Cons-ultative Forum (ACF), Afenifere, Move-ment for Development of Democracy (MDD) and Movement for the Restor-ation of Democracy (MRD).

THISDAY 24/12/2005
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to Paul's epistle all these greedy and shameless governors are endorsing a rumour abi? No one is fooled by the half hearted denials and anyone begging anybody to continue in office represents less than 10% of the populace and is no friend of Nigeria.

Having failed to make an impact in the lives of the people for 6 years, these people need one more term to make still no impact, then another amendment for another term for yet no impact. The big question is why are the governors of ekiti, ogun, oyo, ondo, osun, kogi, gombe supporting this amendment since they are all first termers? It could be because they have been asked by "higher powers" to support it otherwise they will not smell a second term. The blackmail going on in the PDP na wa.

The people of Nigeria realise that it is not the length of time you spend in office that allows you to make an impact. It is what you do. Mandela has had the greatest impact in the lives of South Africans and how long did he stay in office for?

The best response to Paul is to say that whether they want it or not and this includes the Numero uno himself, they cannot have a third term. This is the verdict of not only most Nigerians but also of the world at large.

Let Obj show us his preferred successor so we can start to warm to him/her or not. But if he is dreaming of continuing, he should better wake up because it will not happen.

Marwa Arrested, Interrogated By EFCC - Elendureports.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can we see the emerging pattern? Suddenly anyone interested in the presidency in 2007 has problems. For a long time Marwa was the blue eyed boy of the presidency. They made him Chairman of DIC, a strategic government owned company without even being a member of the PDP. We remember how the Presidency and PDP hierarchy used him to undermine Atiku in Adamawa. Here is a man who spent a long career in the army without any other visible means of income. He retires from the army and sets up an airline. Just like that! Does this not beg serious integrity questions? Not in Nigeria until he wants what they covet, then he starts to get the attention he should have had from day one.

It all smacks of the Etiebet treatment under Abacha. Atiku has been having running problems over 2007. Babangida is boxed in. Orji Kalu has been boxed in and has been left to intermitently crying wolf. Perhaps we should not be suprised were Marwa to suddenly renounce his presidential ambition and settle for governorship. Very soon, we may find no one willing to venture an interest in the presidency of 2007 just like it was when Abacha ruled the roost. Yet the man they are all afraid of is tongue tied and twisted. Let him say it now if he is the lion heart he and his supporters claim he is.

Adujie, if it looks like a third term agenda, walks like a third term agenda, talks like a third term agenda. Then it is surely............................ 2+2 = 4. It is as elementary as that.

To Marwa, we say if you ride on the back of the tiger, don't be suprised when you end up in its stomach.

By any calculus, it is another lose-lose situation contrived by the "new and improved" PDP. If he does not run, it will be a defeat as the opposition would claim to have dissuaded him from trying. If he runs, it will be the mother of all defeats and a vindication of the hidden agenda claim - proof that he was economical with the actualite when he denied it at first. This of course would be the big let down for his dyed in the wool supporters but being the imaginative people they are, I wouldn't put it past them to come up with implausible reasoning.

We don't know of any direct connection of Adujie with Obasanjo other than his penchant for writing pro-government articles and commentary. Whereas, we know of Senator Jubril Aminu's pedigree as an establishment man. He is reputedly close to the presidency and one of those that could be counted upon to thwart any anti-Obasanjo moves in the upper chambers. He was the PDP linkman for Adamawa who refused to register Atiku and his supporters. Well hear him on the third term agenda/rumour-

"Let me tell you something. In July 1978, when General Olusegun Obasanjo was the military head of state, he made a very significant statement. He said some people were coming to him, asking him to stay a little longer. He told Nigerians to ignore them, that they did not mean well for the country; that they were enemies of Nigeria. That what they were asking for was not in the interest of Nigeria. The reason why I cannot argue about the third term issue is that since this thing started, I have not heard this kind of reaction from him. Admittedly, he has said repeatedly that he would not run again, but he has not condemned the people who are busy trying to push the third term agenda through, as he did in 1978. The Hausas say even if the water appears clean, if there is taste in the water there is something inside it. Like you said, they are becoming bolder. More people are talking about it. At the convention ground they were distributing papers. I cannot tell you right now that the third term issue is a figment of anybody’s imagination. We just have to handle it very carefully and see."

Well maybe Adujie knows more than those who are in the PDP with the President or perhaps he is closer to him than those who work with him and do his bidding. We have always thought that Adujie was just an aspiring small time lawyer in America with a computer who could not hack it in Nigeria but looks deceive as they say.

For all our sakes, I wish Adujie were right but how can he be in the face of all the circumstantial evidence?

My Dear Brother, Mr. Sabella Abidde and Mrs. Unregistered…

Infrastructural decay and moral decadence in Nigeria went on, unchecked in Nigeria for far too long, it became pervasive, predominant and prevalent for almost three decades

There was wanton abandonment, wanton neglect and collusive/corrosive corruption with impunity

How is it possible for President Obasanjo or anyone to turn these around in short order? What with all the detractors and distractions? What with the limited resources available for competing projects and priorities?

In Nigeria, there seemed to have been these decades old, generation old bad habits, and suddenly, we disingenuously expect these, to disappear overnight? I wish too, that it was possible to wave a magic wand and have all of Nigeria’s challenges disappears from Nigeria!

But we are mature adults, and we know Santa Claus is fairy tale.

On the matter of Bayelsa state, Plateau state, Anambra state and now, Oyo state, we Nigerians must realize that there is a constitutional law concept called state rights, especially in a federal system as we practice in Nigeria… in a democratic federal system, there is some independence and even autonomy for the political subdivisions… so that, to a large extent, the federal authorities at the center, can not arbitrarily determine what happens at the local and state levels.

Dariye thumb his middle finger? It is the constitutional responsibilities of Plateau House of Assembly to fix him! Ditto for Anambra, Bayelsa and now, Oyo states.

State Houses of Assembly, should be active in the matters concerning states and state governors, it is so specifically stated in our federal constitution

Why? Some Nigerians editorialize about why the EFCC and President Obasanjo should have waited for ever for Bayelsa to deal with its errant Alamie, and how President Obasanjo should not have intervened in Plateau state or declare state of emergency etc

But yet, some want President Obasanjo to intervene in every state to set things right, even to set purely local matters rights…. Soon, we will be insisting that the removal of the mammoth garbage in Aba, Lagos and Onitsha etc is a federal matter!

President Obasanjo is damned if he does, and doubly damned if he does not?

And Ah! It is President Obasanjo’s fault that garbage in Aba, Abia state is mile high as we have learned from our brother here at NVS, Mr. Uche Nworah!

Garbage removal is purely local matter!

Where are the local administrators in Aba?

When are ALL Nigerians going to start to pay attention to their state and local officials? Make state and local officials responsive, accountable, transparent and productive? WHEN?

Ah! President Obasanjo neglected to remove the garbage in Aba or neglected to remind Governor Kalu Orji, who cannot cure the garbage and erosion crisis in Aba, a major city and an economic nerve center in his state, but he is a favorite presidential candidate to some? Orji cannot solve the garbage problem in Aba, but he wants to be president of Nigeria? It is very cold today in New York, and it President Obasanjo’s fault!
