Election 2007: Is Orji Kalu the New Face of Igbo People?

By mid eighties young and successful Orji Kalu has already captured the attention of the Nigerian print media. While this romance with the press lasted, he made occasional statements which hinted his interests in politics. This, though, did not manifest till 1999 when he emerged the governor of Abia state. It was from that point that people actually woke up to the developing political phenomenon called Orji Kalu.

As the current governor of Abia state, not too many elites believe in him. This is largely due to the controversy trailing his performance since he became the presiding officer of Abia state. Though he had always defended his stewardship before the Nigerian and world press, but his political opponents, including Pres. Obasanjo had always faulted such claims.

Pushy as ever, he'd always kept his head high, nourishing his cream of high and mighty friends around the globe, which includes U.S politicians, prominent traditional rulers and retired Nigerian heads of state.

The current post-election scenario in the southeast appear to be vindicating the self styled master political strategist. The grass root appeal of his brain-child, the newly formed Progressive People's Alliance could be a testimony of Kalu's stewardship in Abia state.

Consequently, his PPA did not only win the hearts of the Abians, It won handsomely the gubernatorial seat of the state. Announcing the results in Umuahia, Abia State capital,  the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prince Solomon Soyebi, disclosed that the PPA candidate, Theodore Orji polled 265,389 to come tops, while governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, came a distant second with 136,858 votes.

The message was unambiguous, as INEC was quick to concede the state to Obasanjo's  arch political enemy, despite the.fact that the victorious candidate, Theodore Orji, himself is still in detention on spurious charges.

Thus, this political feat of Chief Orji Kalu must be applauded. Floating a political party and winning a state immediately after, is a herculean task. From the level of his determination, Orji Kalu may after all have something to offer his kinsmen and Nigerians in general. For it takes a lot of guts to stand up to Pres. Obasanjo's unconstitutional behaviour. Like Atiku Abubakar, Chief Kalu is courageous, and upholding such attribute would herald a new dawn in assertive politics in Nigeria.
.
Whatever is the driving force behind his political ambition, Orji Kalu has used the PPA  victory in Abia state to make a statement. It's now clear that he's is not a talkative, senile or  a push-over. He is indeed a powerful life-force.

He is popular, and has simultaneously managed to maintain this popularity in the North while articulating robust statements on Igbo cause in Nigeria. It would be recalled that he was endorsed by a faction of Ohaneze Ndigbo headed by Dr. Dozie Ikedife as the Igbo candidate for the 2007 presidential race, an endorsement which yet triggered another round of controversy across the Igbo world.

Analysts would quickly agree that the victory of his PPA over the monstrous PDP was indeed a reflection of the strength of character of the man. Kalu is Fearless, and he'd shown severally his strong diplomatic finesse. Towering among his peers, he stood up to reconcile the two Igbo icons, Chiefs Ojukwu and Ekwueme, despite the fact that he was a mere teenager when the two men fell out of each others favour. He repeated a similar feat when he sat Generals Buhari and Babangida down and reconciled their differences.

Kalu, though, has recently obtained a degree in political science. But when one ponders that he has been doing all these without a diploma or university degree, the thought re-echoes the life and times of historical world leaders who never had any diploma or degree, or who obtained them long after they left office: Abraham Lincoln, Vladimir Ilyanich Lenin, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Joseph Stalin, John Major, Shimon Perez, Lech Walesa, and so on.

The nature of the Igbo problem in Nigeria would need many Kalus to stand in the fore-front. He has shown that a politician in Nigeria can have broad national appeal, while articulating  issues bothering his ethnic group. In an era when politicians who turn their back on the real problems bothering their ethnic groups are grouped as "detribalized Nigerians", Kalu should be among those whom the Igbo should count on. Win or loose the 2007 presidential race.

Having said that, the allegation of corruption brought against him by the EFCC may turn out to be the hi-cup to savour his emerging status. As his immunity would be collapsed next month, having his candidate in the Government house Umuahia, may give him the room to maneuver. Indeed, It's only time that will determine what next Kalu would do. But surely, a political gladiator has emerged..

No. He may be an adept in playing the "do or die affair" game, facing down Baba's bullying tendencies unlike most of his governor colleagues but definitely not the new face of Igbo people. Other Igbo facial xtics that Kalu exhibits includes courage, detribalism and business acumen. But on intellectual sagacity, good governance, accountability and moral uprightness, the jury seems to be out. Faced with Kalu, the Igbo face will have a lot of blemishes.
He is the product of the system we operate and a case study for anyone who wants to be a successful politician and businessman simultaneously in Nigeria.
I believe an Igbo face should be better educated, morally upright and a faithful servant of the people.

Interesting...

A few questions and answers....

1a. Is Orji Uzor Kalu the new face of the Igbos? No
1b. Is Orji Uzor Kalu the face of the Abia people? I'm not sure many Abians would claim that.
2. Did he successfully lead the PPA to out manoeuvre the PDP on April 14th? Yes
3. Is this a brilliant acheivement? If you've got the power of incumbency...easy peasy really
4. Is the PPA a better alternative to the PDP? Not really. PDP is a failed party so I guess PPA would have to do
5. Does the PPA have any solid programs which can improve the lives of the people of Abia state? Not really. An infant party with no national appeal. If OUK could not transform the lives of his people while a PDP governor, then the PPA is simply the same ideology and approach under a different name.
6. Has OUK become a political icon? Yes. He has just established himself as the newest 'God-father'
7. Will the world ever know the truth about OUK's alleged mis-appropriation of funds? Not likely. His 'boy' Theodore Orji will make sure of that.
8. Is Theodore Orji really being jailed on spurious charges? I have no answer...there is no smoke without fire.
9. Will Nigerians ever experience good leadership in this world? Oh God our father in heaven...only thou knowest!!

First of all, it is not true that Abraham Lincoln did not possess a degree as President. History has it that he read law in his part time, became a lawyer in 1836 and did practice law for a while before he was voted in as president.

The question of whether Orji Kalu represents the new face of Ndigbo is a rather interesting one. As the author suggests, in the present arrangement where courage, bold faced contestation and political resiliency are necessary conditions for political survival, it would seem Orji Kalu has passed the test decisively and cannot be ignored in the scheme of things, especially in Alaigbo.

Obviously, having overwhelming control of economic power can easily assure one of political power, given the fact that money politics is all we have managed to produce back home. That accounts for any voice Orji Kalu has in Nigeria today and since not too many young people are similarly endowed, I doubt that his singular experience will become the norm in Igboland anytime soon.

Having acquired extraordinary wealth at a very young age, his path to singular opportunities was paved very early in life- a fate I suspect not too many young Ndigbo can lay claims to as per the economic realities in Nigeria today.

That said, he will no doubt be an inspiration to many that believe the only way to navigate the treacherous terrain of Nigerian politics is to adopt the Orji Kalu tactics of inflicting maximum pressure on the dominant power structures until their grip on one’s neck is loosened.

I personally think he is a bit too garrulous and tends to display a lack of depth in his articulation of the pertinent issues that plague our nation. While his courage and goal-orientation has been exemplary, viewed from an all encompassing perspective, I think he lacks certain qualities of a phenomenal figure- i.e. economic integrity (whether actual or perceived is yet uncertain but the perception that he is corrupt poses a hindrance to his emergence as a formidable Igbo leader), oratory skills, temperance and moral uprightness.

He may yet get there but for now, he falls short of an Igbo phenomenon. If at some point though, Ndigbo decide to lower their time honored standards for temporary gains in a political dispensation that is defined by political thuggery and political garagaraism- all of which Kalu is no stranger to, we can then conveniently speak of Kalu as the new face of Igbo people. For now, his appeal is yet to cut across classes of Ndigbo, especially the intellectual élite and concerned professionals.

Its a pity that its only in nigeria that anything goes.
How on earth can one insult people than the one ascribed above?
Orji Uzor Kalu? new Igbo face?
This is a collective insult to igbo dynamisms. On what merits and demerits can anybody assert this OUK to the igbo's of old. Maybe time has changed to our standards in assesing individuals.
Orji Uzor Kalu's igbo face is on Education? on morals? on uprightness? Integrity.
No wonder motor park touts could even be made kings in their community.
