Further details emerged today, why Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala resigned her federal ministerial appointment upon return from London where she was attending debt relief negotiation with the London Club.

According to a family source, Ngozi traveled from Lagos to Delta State by road shortly before her trip to London, accompanied by a retinue of aides. She flew from Delta State to London via Lagos and commenced negotiations while she was in London on behalf of the Federal government, negotiating $4 billion loan forgiveness with the London Club of creditors which would have Nigeria part with another $2 billion.

Her removal as the headship of Obasanjo’s “Economic Management Team” was brought to her attention by her friend on Tony’s Blair commission for Africa, though she was very upset about her unceremonious removal, she took it calmly promising to give president Obasanjo “a piece of my  mind” as soon as she returns back to Abuja.

However, she received a shock of her life when her Abuja –based family informed her of a tragedy concerning her driver and protocol officers who had traveled with her to Delta State.

Saharareporters was informed that they were involved in a ghastly auto accident in her official SUV car on their way to Abuja leading to the total ruin of her official car. The driver and protocol officers were critically injured and hospitalized at an undisclosed hospital.

The foreign Affairs minister was thus advised not to return to Abuja for her personal safety. It became more worrisome for her when she could not reach President Obasanjo on his hotline. She returned to Abuja and tendered a long resignation letter to the Secretary to the Federal Government citing pressing family issues as her reason for resigning and rushed out of her office, almost practically trying to flee Nigeria.

Sources said she returned back to her Abuja home when she couldn’t find a flight to the US from Abuja as all flights were fully booked and also because she felt her resignation was well received by the president.  She also decided to return because of a housing transaction said to be facilitated by the president. According to the another source, the president had compromised the “Economic Management Team” by giving them houses in Abuja and Lagos for the purposes of getting their support and loyalty towards his third term bid, Ngozi Iweala thus got a house worth N85 million.

It is not clear what she intends to do with the properties and others belonging to her family members since she was being prevailed upon to leave Abuja for Maryland USA earlier today.Okonja Iweala resigns from Obasanjo government

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Okonjo Iweala has resigned from the Obasanjo government. Her resignation resulted from what insiders referred to as “deep personal clashes” that culminated in her removal as the head of the Economic Team while she was attending a conference in London.

Saharareporters had exclusively reported that Mrs. Ngozi Oknjo-Iweala was demoted from the finance ministry when she was suddenly moved to the foreign affairs ministry a few weeks ago.

No further information is available per the immediate reasons for her resignation today; sources disclosed that she sent her resignation letter to the president. The president, who had fallen out with her, had expected her resignation since her abrupt move to the foreign ministry.

 More to come!

Anyone with ethics will find it difficult working for or with any govt in Nigeria.

I have suggested earlier following the minister's removal from finance ministry that she should resign if she wanted her integrity to be intact. Her resignation is even late in coming.

Nigerian foreign minister resigns

Nigerian Foreign Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has resigned, days after being replaced as head of the country's economic reform team.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, who negotiated the cancellation of $30bn debt to the Paris Club, was switched in June from the Finance Ministry to Foreign Affairs.

She had remained head of the economics team, but this week was replaced by the new Finance Minister, Nenadi Usman.

President Olusegun Obasanjo praised the minister's "monumental achievements".

A government stated quoted the president as accepting Mrs Okonjo-Iweala's resignation "based on your compelling need to take care of pressing family issues".

Critics of the president say the change may be because of a personal clash.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala's ousting as head of the economic reform team was announced while she was in London, trying to secure further debt relief for Nigeria.

Debt relief

A former top World Bank executive, it was as Nigeria's finance minister and head of President Obasanjo's economic reform team that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala made her name at home and abroad.

She saved - rather than squandered - the government's profits from oil revenues.

Then she negotiated the largest debt relief deal in Africa, which saw Nigeria's $30bn debt to the Paris Club partly written off, saving the country $18bn.

But without warning in June, she was suddenly switched from being the minister of finance to the prestigious, but less powerful position of foreign minister.

Analysts were concerned but were reassured by the fact that she retained her post as head of the economic team, from which she was removed earlier this week.

Mr Usman, who succeeded her first as finance minister and then as head of the economic team, has pledged to keep the reform programme going.

The BBC's Alex Last in Lagos says that although the reform programme is unlikely to change in the short term, the state of Nigeria's finances will now be under even greater scrutiny.

I cannot believe this. We finally get one competent government official and OBJ lets her go. I think we are condemned to be governed by a pack ignoramuses. I only wish she would run for president.

All hystrionics aside, is there a suggestion by many commentators on this board that former Minister of Finance Okonjo-Iweala CANNOT be re-assigned by the person that appointed her?

She is WELL within her rights to resign. That option remains for EVERYONE. What I'm having difficulty understanding is this underlying assumption that if she isn't in charge of the Finance Ministry, she cannot be of service.

However, I do agree with Auspicious, I think it was in another thread, that the timing and MANNER of the changes is ABSOLUTELY without class; sadly what I've come to expect from a classless person like Objoke?

If she truly feels she has had/said/seen enough then I applaud her resignation and wish her well in her future endeavors. I see a book deal in the making!
