Anambra State: Deputy Governor Sworn in

The Anambra State saga took another bizarre turn earlier today as Mrs. Dame Virgy Etiaba was sworn in Awka by the chief judge of the state, Hon. Okoli, she becomes the first ever female governor in Nigeria's history and the third in Anambra State since 2003.

Saharareporters gathered from sources in Awka that Mrs. Virgy Etiaba agreed to be sworn in after she visited the Ikemba of Nnewi, Chief Ojukwu in company of the impeached governor, Mr. Peter Obi. It is not clear if her new position was as a result of her own game plan or something decided between her and former principal, Peter Obi.

Sources in Awka told Saharareporters that when Peter Obi met with the Ikemba, Chief Ojukwu it was decided that Mrs. Etiaba be allowed to take over as governor so as to avoid the imposition of a state of emergency on Anambra state by president Obasanjo, who they believe is very much behind the crisis.

The deal is to have Mrs. Etiaba hold on to the governorship seat while Peter Obi assembles a strong legal team to challenge his impeachment in a court of law, it is unclear if Peter Obi will stick to the agreement to allow Mrs. Etiaba rule as governor, as he vows today to continue fighting against his impeachment describing it as a "slap of constitutionality".

Mrs. Etiaba said that much at the swearing in ceremony, she maintained that she doesn't want to be congratulated or buffetted with praise, she promised to shunning or welcoming solidarity visits from any groups whatsoever.

Breaking NEWS: Peter Obi of Anambra State impeached

Today, state legislators of Anambra State this morning in Awka, Anambra State impeached APGA party Governor, Peter Obi as governor of Anambra State. In a press conference following the impeachment, the speaker, Mike Balonwu claimed that 21 lawmakers signed the 'resolution' of the impeachment action, it is not clear how many members were physically present at the sitting.

Supposedly, this will bring to an end, a bitter and vastly unpopular action of the state legislators who had accused the governor of impropriety in office.

The house of assembly which yesterday met with representatives of president Obasanjo in Asaba , Delta State were accompanied to Awka by heavy security provided by the police mobile unit. The house of assembly members arrived Awka at at 5:00 AM and began sitting afterwards, they received the report of a panel of investigation set up to investigate the governor and after deliberating for about an hour, decided to impeach the governor, Peter Obi.

The house has written to the chief judge of the state to swear in the current deputy governor, Mrs.Etiaba as the governor. She too faces her own troubles with the house of assembly but feelers from sources involved in the impeachment plot were that she had crossed over to the PDP and as such was very involved in the impeachment of her principal, this cannot be confirmed as another source tells Saharareporters that her impeachment will commence next week.

Meanwhile Governor Peter Obi appeared in Awka today after his impeachment was announced by the house of assembly vowing not to vacate his seat as governor, in an emotional laden press conference he denied any wrongdoing and accused the house of assembly of bad faith. He also announced that he could locate the whereabouts of his deputy, mrs. Etiaba

Another one bites the dust.

Now my question is … is OBJ going anywhere in 2007 with all this confusion brewing in the states?
One thing though, the Anambra House members are just playing out a script from Abuja in which OBJ and his PDP co-travellers want to assure their victories( ?? ) in all the states in the 2007 elections (if they do hold) by using the power of incumbency to intimidate any form of opposition. Really, it was only a matter of time before the hawks did something about Peter Obi anyways and he seems to have encroached on their (?) territory in Anambra. Our politics stinks!

Prof. Babalola Borishade has been dropped as Aviation Minister - Femi Fani-Kayode replaces him

This is the second time OBJ is droping this Borishade guy. Does this suggest the man is cursed with ill-fortune?

Hi Cdimkpa, do you have any links to confirm that long-awaited (on my part at least) news?

This is very upsetting news. The reasons given don't seem to warrant impeachment - the man's true "crime" appears to be that he is not a member of the PDP. How does a governor legally fight impeachment in Nigeria (I'm genuinely curious because I don't know)?
