Five-goal Nigeria see hopes dashed

Nigeria's bid to reach their fourth FIFA World Cup™ finals ended in bitter disappointment on Saturday despite overwhelming Zimbabwe 5-1.

The Super Eagles' hopes ended when Angola beat Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali to win Group 4 in the African zone and book a first appearance in the finals.

Both Nigeria and Angola finished on 21 points each but the Angolans went through to the finals in Germany next summer courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against the Eagles. They had beaten Nigeria 1-0 in Luanda and drawn 1-1 in Abuja.

Nigeria had qualified for the last three FIFA World Cup finals, reaching the second round in 1994 and 1998. "It's a big blow that we will not be going to the World Cup after all. We did our best to save the situation but it was not good enough at the end of the day," said Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen.

"What we now need to do is to try to pick up the pieces both as a team and as individuals. If we don't do that, we could be down forever."

Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he blasted a pull-back by Taye Taiwo past goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro.

He scored a second goal from the penalty spot after 74 minutes when substitute Nwankwo Kanu was brought down inside the box. Dynamo Kiev midfielder Yusuf Ayila scored his second goal in as many starts for Nigeria when he fired home inside the box six minutes after the interval.

Zimbabwe pulled a goal back soon after when Auxerre striker Benjamin Mwaruwari outjumped the Nigerian defence before nodding a corner-kick past Vincent Enyeama.

Kanu scored the Super Eagles' fourth goal in the 79th minute when he converted the resultant penalty after a goal-bound Osaze Odemwingie was brought down inside the box. Odemwingie completed the rout in stoppage time when he powered home a terrific shot which was helped in by the Zimbabwe goalkeeper.

Nigeria, who were without injured skipper Jay Jay Okocha, began the game by going for goals right from the kick-off with the youthful strike force of Martins and Makinwa leading the attack but the Warriors from Zimbabwe held their own.

Marseille defender Taiwo fired two shots at the Zimbabwe goal area in the eighth and 14th minutes but on both occasions they failed to find the target. Zimbabwe also had a chance on 12 minutes but goalkeeper Enyeama saved Shingayi Kaondera's free-kick.

It was not until the 26th minute that the home team carved out a real scoring chance when Lille forward Odemwingie drove into the Zimbabwe box but he failed to direct his shot on target.

However, ten minutes later Martins grabbed his sixth goal of the qualifying tournament when he connected after a brilliant run by Taiwo from the left flank to set Nigeria on their way.

It hurts so much, but I can\'t see Nigeria going through. We lost our chances when we failed to beat Angola at home.
A qualification will be a very pleasant surprise.

I blame everything on Okocha. He showed lack of commitment wen it was neededmost.

Hopefully, NFA will pick up the pieces and reorganize itself. We didnt deserve to be at the WC with our shoddy prep. :(

I feel a little better knowing that our co-regulars - Cameroun, Senegal, South Africa, wont make it as well.

If you are truly a patriotic Nigerian, not the fake type that rewards a herd mentality, you should be happy that Nigeria did not qualify for the world cup. I am football fan, played the game in primary and high schools and teaches my boys in my backyard. However, as a person who wants quality government and a Nigeria where merit and hard work is rewarded, the last thing we need is football uforia that provides fake patriotism and an opportunity for rogue politicians to appear to be statesmen.

If you are truely patriotic, rejoice when events that can stand the test of time in moving Nigeria forward occurs. None has happened since 1967. Thank God the Eagles lost. It only could have provided irrational exuberance (borrowing from Alan Greenspan), sought of like a drug high, don\'t you think?

I’m a little saddened by the fact that Nigeria couldn’t make it, solely because Angola have a better head to head result in our two meetings, even though we have the same points tally and better goals difference. But if we were in their shoes, I would be damn happy as well, so congratulations to them.

The positive for me from a Nigerian perspective is that this may act as a wake-up call. When it comes to our sports, we’re a very proud people and the fact that we have failed for the first time (since 1994 when we first qualified) to qualify for the World Cup will rankle for a long time. The chaos that is football administration in Nigeria will probably get a look in finally, though I’m not holding my breath.

For Africa, the fact that four entirely new teams are going to the World Cup for the first time should be hugely applauded. These teams have served notice on the traditional football powers of Africa that the page is turning. I welcome this wholeheartedly. Watching Nigeria, Cameroon, Tunisia and their likes in previous World Cups left me with the feeling that they’re getting complacent. Last time out, only the newcomers, Senegal did enough to make us proud. So, seriously, multiple kicks up their backsides are long overdue!

For West Africa, it is a restatement of the fact that we remain the football capital of Africa. Three of the four teams so far qualified are from this region – Ivory Coast, Ghana and Togo. Togo should be especially praised because it is a very small country that has now qualified, not least because of the efforts of their national team coach who is no other than Stephen Keshi, the former Nigerian captain and assistant national team manager. It’s a case of the stone that has been rejected becoming the head cornerstone. Nigeria’s loss is Togo’s gain!

Finally, for the Chelsea boys, Drogba and Essien, congratulations are definitely in order. And I say congratulations to Mourinho also, because he has a vested interest in Angola’s qualification, having given them advice. While I’m not very optimistic about the chances of any of these teams in Germany, I’m reminded that this is football and anything can happen. I wish them all luck.

Stephen Keshi as Togo\'s National Team Coach.... as Nigeria Football Association shopped all year for a foreign coach and technical adviser?

Nigerian football/soccer experts who were vying for these positions and were passed over or overlooked, will now have the last laugh!

Where are the Zimbabwean farmers in Kwarra state... do they coach football too?

Our football/soccer administrators and soccer players seem to become patriotic/nationalistic in the last minute?

How about letting patriotism and nationalism influence your preparation, training and paticipation?

So that, if you are like some of the players, you dragged your feet, and then make up your mind in the last minute, you are clearly not helping Nigeria\'s cause....you are clearly not in, or part of the team efforts...this is what happens... loss!

Nigerians want Nigeria\'s interests... and Nigeria\'s glory, but their actions frequently does not reflect such.... and loss become the result, not because we are incapable or because we are less than the winner, but because we were asleep!

Nigerians should wake up.... and see how the world works... every nation...in politics, in economics, in culture and religions etc..... every nation play to win.... life itself, is like soccer.....it is all about winning for your nation.... soccer is a metaphor for life itself!

I am saddened that Nigeria is out.... and not because we lacked the men or the materials!

with the experience of the 1998 in France which became a battle field for the supporters clubs led by Mme ARAMIDE & the opposition club. (Corruption agogo)

Why is it that Mr Oladipo was selling tickets himself to his people. (mgbati-mgbati every where) man know man business. (what of our poor systers&brothers who payed millions of naira to go to France. and then abandoned in paris & enghien.
many of them where frustrated, rumouring, helpless like ONE YEYE BOY WHEY ONE YEYE WIND DEY BLO FROM ONE YEYE CORRRNER; MOST OF THESE EXILED PEOPLE WHERE SENT TO PRISON BY THE FRENCH POLICE.

why didn\'t he release eagles allowance before they went on strike that morning of the match with Danemark? this case provoked eagles packing to the Holiday Inn at the airport. thereby loosing concentration on that particular match.

why is it that eagles camp at ENGHIEN became a market place? MGBATI MGBATI EVERY WHERE.

The only guy who was serious then was this actual EGUOAVON.

others were very very arrogant with their Limousin up & down (of course I was there)

LETS BE SERIOUS NOW.
ARE WE THE EMPTY VESSEL THAT MAKES TOO MUCH SHAKARA

BRAVO TO THE MINORITY QUALIFIERS FROM AFRICA
