Nigerian ex-police chief jailed

Former inspector general of Nigeria's police Tafa BalogunNigeria's former police chief Tafa Balogun has pleaded guilty to eight charges of corruption and been sentenced to six months in prison.

He becomes the first senior official to be convicted in Nigeria's drive to stamp out corruption.

He was arrested in January and has already spent 67 days in custody. He is due to be released early next year.

Judge Binta Nyako said her sentence reflected that Balogun was a first offender and had "shown remorse".

Balogun was inspector general of Nigeria's police for three years until his arrest.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of 4m naira ($30,000), while some $150m-worth of cash and property will be seized by government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission set up to spearhead the fight against corruption by President Olusegun Obasanjo said the conviction was a victory.

"We have recovered all the money for which he was charged... Today's court order is the final order we need," said EFCC lawyer Rotimi Jacobs.

Nigeria is routinely ranked as being seen as one of the world's most corrupt countries by watchdog Transparency International.

Big man steal, small deal. Small man steal, big deal! Slap on the wrist for a big thief. How can some who's being stealing for so long be a "first offender"

Kudos to Nigerian government!

Barrister Tafa Balogun former IGP is now a certified felon!

He can never hold elective office or be appointed to any public office.

This is a good development .... even if you all think it is MERE baby steps....

But the longest journey of all human endeavors, begins with the very first step!

He is guilty and convicted as charged!

Some Nigerians SWORE that Tafa Balogun will never be arrested, and he was arrested and ostentatiously HANDCUFFED.

Some then said he would never be brought to trial.... but he was brought to trial

And evern yesterday, some said he was not going to do time..... but here...

He is GUILTY as Charge and JAILLLLLLLLED

Some also said Tafa Balogun would rat out President Obasanjo, because Mr. President has skeletons in the cupoard regarding elections etc

So when is Balogun going to sing and squeal all he knows?

How come we are NEVER satisfied? Never satisfied about ANY efforts at reforms?..there is always something else, some conspiracy theories?

Mr I Love Nigeria, how can he sing when he has only been slapped on the wrist for getting caught?

For a lawyer, you would be excused if you were the defence counsel but for an acclaimed supporter of the Prosecution, your rejoicing at a serial felon being let off lightly speaks volumes.

Clearly a deal has been cut in which the man is let off lightly in exchange for keeping his big mouth shut and I bet they have not found everything he stole or extorted from political office holders or hapless road users.

The other day, Emma Nwude was sent to jail for 25 years for bringing down a foreign bank though he will probably spend only another year in jail and Tafa, for seriously undermining the security of a whole country gets six months from the same justice system? Come on, pull the other one! It is a travesty nothing more!

Aluta!

$150 million na wa o, Atta is buiding a state of the art airport for $125m He for just ask Tafa for loan instead of all this Build Operate and Transfer deals come name the airport Tafa Balogun Airport.
The only problem is that the Airport could turn out to be the choice route for our drag queens like Alamco the nations first cross dresser and first GAY governor.
That really was a slap on the wrist something like if I catch you hand inside pot again I go show you pepper.
Well done Ribadu even though it is obvious you would have wanted the felon to loose weight in jail instead of going overseas for tummy tuck.

Tafa omo ole oloriburuku dem suppose naked you for market square make small pikins dey stone you
