Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) today suspended Vice President Abubarka Atiku from the party. The decision was reached at a meeting held at the Partys headquarter in Abuja. The Vice President has dismissed his suspension at "illegal, null and void."
However, Vice President Atiku has described his purported suspension from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as an affront on the Nigerian judiciary which had granted an injunction restraining the party from taking any disciplinary action against him and the Governor of Adamawa state, Boni Haruna.
"My suspension from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is an affront on the Nigerian judiciary which had granted an injunction restraining the party from taking any disciplinary action against him and the Governor of Adamawa state, Boni Haruna.
The Vice President said the PDP was aware that a competent court had in May this year restrained the party from taking any disciplinary action against him until a suit he filed against the party is decided
Atiku described the reason given by the PDP for his suspension as spurious, illogical and of no consequences. The EFCC report and that of the so-called administrative panel which purportedly indicted him, Atiku argued, are now being challenged in court by him. He wondered why the party could not wait for the cases to be decided by the court before rushing to suspend him.
The PDP action is part of an evil plot to stop me from contesting the 2007 presidential election. By the grace of God, such sinister plot will fail. Atiku said.
It is most unfortunate, tragic and odious that the PDP is taking action on a matter which is the subject of litigation. This is evidence of the Illegality, recklessness and arrogant misuse of power by President Olusegun Obasanjo and his lackeys, or garrison boys in the PDP.
The Vice President said he would remain unruffled by this latest move to destroy him and that he would continue to focus on his legal challenge of the Obasanjo contrivance which has rubbished all claims to decency, statesmanship and integrity that the President claims.
History will judge all of us. The destruction of our institutions and values in pursuit of petty personal interest as well as egomaniac domination of our political space will fail just as the life presidency project failed woefully.
Again, I would like to call on all my supporters to remain calm and be law abiding. Nothing, I say, nothing will stop me from serving out my term as elected Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I remain convinced of the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary before which my case has been placed, he concluded
