OPEN LETTER TO THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ON THE TERMINATION OF THE THIRD TERM AGENDA BY THE NIGERIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION ISSUED ON MAY 25, 2006 The Rt Honourable Ken Nnamani President of the Senate of the National Assembly of Nigeria And The Rt. Honourable Aminu Bello Masari Speaker of the House of Representatives Dear Sirs, It is with great joy and pride that we, members of the Nigerian Leadership Foundation (NLF) extend to you and your colleagues in both chambers of the National Assembly, our deepest appreciation for your principled and selfless service in helping to uphold the democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people during the recent debate on amending the Constitution of the Federal Republic. We are proud that you insisted on maintaining the transparency of the process and the rules of the National Assembly in guiding the debates to reflect the true wishes of Nigerias democratic majority. That majority of Nigerians had folllowed, with growing concern, the transparent scheming of the same incorrigible class of self-serving, palace-jesters who, as usual, sought to promote tenure elongation and one-man rule as the purchase price for sorely-needed political and economic reforms. In rejecting that Trojan Horse, the National Assembly not only redeemed itself but spoke for the people that the nation of our dreams is one that should never become the fiefdom of a capricious ruler or party. The formula for an enduring democracy is that political office-holders will come and go but the nation and the people will remain and thrive beyond anybodys tenure no matter how gifted or well-meaning they may be.. Your exemplary leadership and refusal to sacrifice principle for personal or partisan gains will hopefully usher a new era for legislative independence and encourage other good men and women of integrity to give public service another look so Nigeria may be rid of the strangle-hold of cash-and-carry politicians in 2007. The teeming millions of Nigerians at home and in Diaspora look up to you to help propel this historic blow for democracy into an enabling law for truly free and legitimate national elections in 2007 so that a popular mandate, rather than political chicanery, will be all that is required to institute and consolidate democratic reforms in Nigeria. Again Sirs, we salute and thank you for your courage. Signed, Steve U. Nwabuzor President, Nigerian Leadership Foundation The NLF is a non-profit organization formed by Nigerians to promote democracy, as well as good, responsible, accountable and transparent governance in Nigeria.
