[5 Years Anniversary] The NVS Journey So Far….

Dear Villagers,

Please allow me to congratulate you all on the fifth anniversary of Nigerian Village Square (NVS or “The Square”) which comes up today April 16th 2008. As I write, “villagers” in Abuja and London have already held get-togethers to mark this occasion, while efforts are underway by those in the United States and Lagos meet the high standards set by these two. I congratulate every one of you that graced the occasions. Thank you.

As many of you know, NVS was established to play the role of a virtual watering hole and a forum for free intellectual expression for Nigerians and friends of Nigeria across the earth. Through discussions and reviews about political events, The Square has built up its reputation, over the last three years, as an authoritative source of up-to- date news, commentary and rich interchange of ideas for Nigerians. The Square has also become one of the most active Internet sites devoted to matters of relevance to Nigeria and Nigerians. Just this past weekend, one of Nigerians foremose opinion leaders, Dr Reuben Abati wrote in his column that the NVS is “ the most active and the most interactive being in my estimation”. Its not surprising that these days, more and more opinion leaders are gracing the pages of NVS to test their ideas.

From the co-founders who started this journey with me 5 years ago to the newest JJC today, I say, THANK YOU for sustaining a mere dream and making it our reality. Thank you for creating the NVS. Thank you for the trust you have in us as custodian of the culture of free speech and positive activism that has guided us from day one.

Where we have been

While we are proud to provide a forum for Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to share ideas, it is clear from our history that we are not only content with providing this forum. We actually have sought and still seek to make a difference in our country and our world. Over the past 5 years, in the course of our interactions, members of the site have identified and rallied around causes in the realms of charitable contributions, political activism, social sensitization and popular education. On this occasion, I thought I’ll share a few words on our vision and our journey so far

Impact on Society

From the dollar salary affair to the Obasanjo anti-third term campaign, from anti-election rigging campaigns to our support for Professor Chinua Achebe’s enlightened rejection of Obasanjo’s national award and from our fervent anti-corruption efforts to the unprecedented worldwide protest we led against the forceful deportation of Nigerians, we have showed we are a force for good.

  • The Aikpitanhi case as an example of the NVS Spirit

The case of Osamuyia Aikpitanhi and the way we pushed it into public consciousness exemplifies our spirit. When the issue of the maltreatment and subsequent death of this citizen was first reported, many NVS members felt that the time has come for Nigerians everywhere to say it loud and clear to the whole world that enough is enough – that we would no longer accept this type of treatment that has become commonplace against our fellow citizens.

We forwarded the story to our embassy in Spain, our government at home and the various media houses expecting them to act, but none did.  So, we gathered over 6000 signatures and took the unprecedented step to peacefully protest around the globe on Friday, June 29, 2007. Protest letters were concurrently delivered to Spanish authorities in Madrid and Valencia and to Spanish embassies and consulates in Lagos , Abuja , Algeria , Austria , Brazil , Burkina Faso , Canada , China , Cyprus , Egypt , Finland , France , Germany , Ireland , Italy , Malaysia , Senegal , South Africa , Spain , Sweden , Switzerland , Turkey , United Kingdom and the United States . Needless to say, the protest was an unqualified success.

Indeed, the protest caused Honourable Samson Osagie to present the matter on the floor of the House of Representatives and also forced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take notice. Finally, the NVS worked with Barristers Femi Falana and Kayode Oladele to file a suit against Iberia Airlines – a case that is still ongoing in US courts.

Additionally, NVS members raised $1200 for the Aikpitanhi family

  • The Present Campaign against British Airways
It is also in this light we must also see the present leadership and direction we are showing with regard to the worldwide protest by Nigerians against British Airways for their unconscionable and racist treatment meted out to Mr Ayodeji Omotade and fellow Nigerians who boarded the BA075 flight from London Heathrow to Lagos on Thursday, March 27, 2008.

Our socio-political activism, both on the individual and collective levels have not gone unnoticed by the powers-that-be. I personally know the kind of pressure being brought to bear on the NVS each time a national issue takes centre-stage on its pages. But we’ve always been consistent in our response to those who complain from behind the scenes. We’ve always said our forum is an equal opportunity canvass. We allow anyone with a view to paint whatever picture they want in the name of responsible free speech and we leave it to the people to decide what view to accept. So, those in Abuja and our state capitals who think we are too critical of the establishment need to understand this. Our pages are open to them as well and at no cost. If you’re a government official, political or social commentator or just an ordinary citizen who has a view or disagree with a view, whether or not expressed at the NVS, you’re welcome to say your bit, as far as you express those views responsibly.

Charity Work

Over the past 5 years, members of the NVS have showed themselves as caring citizens by supporting various charitable causes through financial and moral support. Indeed, this charitable streak predates the very formation of the NVS, as those who championed its formation have engaged in such endeavors while at Nigeriaworld.  In that era, the support we gave the Lagos bomb and fire victims and the reward we gave to an exceptionally honest minibus driver come to mind. However, members of the NVS themselves have carried on and indeed deepened the practice of donating their widow’s mite to help fellow citizens. Examples of our past initiatives in this area include:

  • McPhillips Fund
In January 2005, after an article by Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye alerting us to the desperate health condition of Mr McPhillips Nwachukwu, the then Arts Editor of the Vanguard newspapers, members rallied round to contribute towards his medical expenses for treatment of a kidney ailment.
  • Ese Alabi Fund
In June 2006, our membership dipped their hands in their pockets once again to support the family of Elizabeth Ese Alabi, a pregnant lady who died after being denied a heart transplant in England.
  • Baby Andrew ($6000)
The latest of those charitable efforts is the one for Baby Andrew Duku. In February 2008, we set a target of six thousand dollars ($6000) for our members towards saving the life of this one-year old baby through a corrective heart surgery in India. We met and surpassed the target and in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association of Nigeria (DSAN).

Youth Empowerment

As part of our contribution to education and youth development, the NVS instituted a National Youth Essay Contest, the first of which was organized in the summer of 2006 under the title, My Place of Happiness. Halima Mamud, Dr Reuben Abati and Col Abubakar Umar presented the cash prizes of 10,000 naira, a book by Professor Wole Soyinka, You Must Set Forth at Dawn and a recognition certificate to the winners Fatima Ibrahim, Zynat Sani Alhassan and Adeniji Tolulope in Nigeria.

Podcasts and Forward looking Ideas

Apart from building up a reputation over the past five years as an authoritative source of informed commentaries on Nigeria, the NVS has posited itself in the forefront of internet technology through its introduction of its user-friendly interactive format, video on the web and podcasts.  The NVS podcast is Nigeria's premier podcast service with a worldwide audience, including Nigerian opinion leaders across the globe. The podcasts are intended to educate, inform, entertain and enlighten. Recent guests include Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Governor Chris Ngige, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, Honourable Sola Adeyeye, Barrister Femi Falana, amongst others. The NVS has also championed popular culture through our cutting-edge music database, artiste showcase and book review section.

Medium Term Projects (April 2008 – April 2009)

  • NVS Book: This will be a compilation of the best articles written by NVS members and published on the site over the years. These would be articles not just dealing on immediate issues but those that are forward-looking and capable of being reference materials for generations to come.
  • NVS Journal: This will be a newsy, educational, informative and entertaining quarterly journal circulating among Nigerians at home and abroad.
  • NVS Charitable Foundation: Efforts are currently underway to register a 501c charitable arm of NVS. This will be used in the future to coordinate all such activities that require donations on the part of Villagers amongst other charitable purposes.
  • The NVS Alliance: This will be the official collaborative arm of the NVS and shall be used to spearhead changes inside and outside Nigeria. There are presently two ideas in the pipeline. One is to identify a sector in Nigeria we want to positively affect (education, health, environment, law enforcement, etc) and make a push for change in that one area for one year and see what changes we can bring about in that time.  Of course, we aren’t talking total change, but in one year we want to be able to make a noticeable difference. The second is to form alliances with other national institutions, the media and other Nigerian-related sites to pursue positive national ventures.
  • Youth Competitions: We shall be organizing the 2nd National Youth Essay Contest and a new series of secondary schools’ debates with the finals coinciding with the celebration of our sixth anniversary to be held at Abuja in April, 2009. There shall also be a photographic essay competition for young people, including university students.
  • A flagship lecture by an international or national figure (April 2009): This will also be a major part of our sixth anniversary celebration. Other activities around this lecture and our sixth anniversary shall be the launching of the NVS Book and Journal, the launching of the NVS Charitable Foundation in Nigeria, updates on progress made with the NVS Alliance, presentation of prizes to winners of youth competitions, workshops/showcases by Nigerian inventors/achievers and a strategic dinner that will bring together members and well-wishers of the NVS.

In the coming years, it is our intention to continue to attract Nigerians from all walks of life to our forums. We believe our salvation lies in continued dialogue and insistence on pursuing the democratic path. We’ll continue to support responsible free speech, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria. What we have here is not an empire, but a national institution that is a testament to the Nigerian can-do spirit.  It is our hope that we will continue to grow this forum for our benefit and the benefit of generations yet unborn. Naturally, we will like to see many aspects of the NVS evolve beyond the cyber sphere in such a way as to allow people of like minds to go beyond debating issues and to be in position to practically implement projects that can actually make a difference in people's lives. It is our vision that the membership of the NVS should be able to prepare people for selfless and purposeful service to Nigeria. We want a situation where people will feel improved as professionals and as human beings as a result of their interaction as members of this forum. Our nation cries out for heroes and we are prepared to groom them here! It is our hope that in a few years from now we will have many more reasons to celebrate our modest contributions to national development.

On occasions like this, it all feels worthwhile and it is indeed worthwhile! As I look forward to our future at the NVS together, I thank you all once again for your support. I thank you most especially for having faith in what we are doing here.

Thank you!

Really! i was thrilled about the whole concept of NVS..i finally got a spot where i can rub minds with people with one goal and desire. people with like minds, people that are concerned about the economy and the people in it...."its called giving back to the society"

NVS have touched lives and this couldnt have happened without the true nigerians on this forum"the villagers" who have contributed with their comments, articles, money and time.above all, love! which is the ultimate thing that drives us to be part of this forum touching lives..

BIG-K,
This is your dream that has kicked off and the best is on its way...its a dream that has become a reality not only to nigerians but to the society at large....if you keep it up, the sky will be your starting point. i know you have other things that you do but this is one part of your goals that have become a reality and we the villagers are here to support you!

ONE ADVICE,
If you have an idea that you ve got an insight on, pls follow your dreams! we villagers on NVS are born leaders. if we werent, we wouldnt even bother to log on to this site not to talk of contirbuting..for the mere fact that we are rubbing minds in every aspect that affects us, then we re born to be great. the only way you can actualise it is if you take that one bold step and making the difference....

CONCLUSION,
"Lets not relent in giving back to the society, its the least we can do"

cheers!!!!
one love!
