It was sitting there in my mailbox like a radioactive turd, the title a clear warning, but still I clicked the link to read. A Nigerian woman set upon by her husband, stabbed viciously fourteen times and killed. (In the US, the police often know that a murder was committed by a family member or someone known to a victim because strangers rarely invest as much energy and passion in attacking the victim. The number of wounds tells a story all its own.)

Neighbors mentioned the police visiting the couple's residence several times. A Nigerian close to the family interviewed by the local TV affiliate did not know there was anything amiss with the couple's relationship. Nigerians from the area wrote about a loving wife and mother of four who'd put her husband through school with the income she made from nursing. No one can know what actually transpired between husband and wife, what made their situation take a turn from bad to insane.

What upsets me more than anything is the fact that I've seen too many of these emails over the last two years. How do you explain to a child that her father has decided that death is the only solution to his problems with her mother? That he is willing to allow the US foster care system, which is far from perfect, to decide the fates of his children while he serves out a life sentence in jail?

Is it possible to create a resource to help immigrant couples cope with the frustration of transplanted lives? In most Nigerian communities, a husband and wife are not just married to each other -- their families are joined by their marriage. Abroad, the counsel that elders from both sides of the joined family provide to guide troubled couples is largely missing. There doesn't seem to be anything that has replaced this void. Not church, not friends. Many Nigerians abroad are reluctant to utilize psychologists or counseling services (perhaps for fear that these services are culturally inappropriate). There is no guarantee that such services would solve the problem, but I can't help but wonder.

Is there a counseling/ support service in your neck of the woods to help troubled Nigerian couples? If yes, let us know more about it. Even if it helps only one couple, that's one less couple to worry about.

That man looks like Obugi to me. You know, just wanted to "teach her a lesson" for converting to Folasayoism. :D

This is a serious issue that should not be trivialised, there is a child involved, what becomes of this child, and how old is he?,are there other kids involved?and other lives in jeopardy because of this death

Could it be financial?on the video, it says the woman is a nurse, what does the man do for a living.

Somebody on the video, said there was no indication, of problems in the household, yet police were called to the home in the past.

Marital problems are the biggest issue facing Nigerians abroad today - and this is evident in the deluge of relationship-oriented articles, commentaries etc .

We are facing pressures of balancing traditional african culture (where the Man provides and the woman takes care of the home) with western demands (where both man and wife are income earners). Some of our women get carried away and some of our men dont know how to keep their egos in check.

This unfortunate incident is extreme but goes well to illustrate the ticking time-bomb in Nigerian-American families.

My sympathy goes to the children.

May this woman's soul rest in the Lord, and may God provide refuge for her children. The man will someday meet his maker. I hope he seeks forgiveness before then. A stitch in time may have saved Gloria's life. I hope more women will learn from this and speak up (not passively enduring abuse or encouraging passive agressive behavior) before they end up six feet under by the man who claims to love them. God help us all.
