Nigerian Government Issues UK Travel Warning
- The Times of Nigeria
The Nigerian government today issued a travel warning to Nigerians traveling to the United Kingdom. A statement from the Ministry of Information and National orientation warned Nigerian citizens to be “wary of miscreants who employ a great variety of trickeries to dispossess people of their properties.”

Nigerian government is not known to have issued any such warnings about any other country in the past. “Some of the trickeries employed by these miscreants, according to the statement, “include pouring tomato juice or other substances upon their victims dress, and then offer to help remove it. They may also feign to pick an object which had fallen under their victims seat” in order to distract attention.”

“In the recent past, the Nigerian High Commission has observed an upsurge in pick-pocketing, actual robberies and assault against Nigerians who are on visit to London. The major flashpoints of these crimes include airports, hotels and restaurants, high-streets, shopping centers, markets, tube stations, bus-stops and even inside buses. The occurrences have been particularly high at Heathrow Airport, Oxford Street, Piccadilly and Charring Cross.”

The Nigerian High Commission says the miscreants are generally white. However, persons of east European and North African origins are not excluded. There is also no evidence that Nigerians are being specifically targeted but ostentatious dressing, spending and ancillary actions may identify a target.

Nigerian travelers are hereby warned not to carry large amount of money on their body and ensure their air-tickets, passports, expensive wrist-watches as well as trinkets are securely hidden. Importantly, people should watch out for Metropolitan Police signs which warn that “thieves operate in this area”.

Are the tables turning here? Interesting warning. But Nigerians will still go to Britaan even if there is a nuclear bomb about to explode in that country. Miscreants will not stop the flow of Nigerians to Britain as areas boys in Lagos have never stopped anyone from traveling in their neighborhood.

Hmmmm,

a miracle is taking place in some circles of the Nigerian government; somebody somewhere is waking up AT LAST to issues of image and how it can INJURE or IMPROVE the self-esteem of a country. However, the issue of Image goes beyond travel advisories -it affects education, religion, foreign policy, the economy, and most importantly culture - and in these areas, the relevant content, operation, and goals MUST REFLECT a proposed/sought after image status.

To digress a bit, I note that the travel advisory makes no mention of daily hate crimes and racism. Or doesn't the Nigerian government know what racism means?

Anyhow, there's no point speaking about Nigerian image if you cannot manufacture your own car, don't produce your medicines, can't feed yourself, don't do research in your universities, lag behind technologically, get oyibo people to run your industries, don't teach proper history in schools. Promoting an African image should never be done in a solely defensive mode, it is an earnest and unending pursuit of worthy cultural passions.

Exactly - and this should tell you how minuscule the importance of travel advisories are in determining whether people go to a place or not, and why we really shouldn't get all worked up about those travel advisories issued by Western governments about Nigeria.

About bloody time as well, my father was recently relieved of his briefcase which had his passport, spending money & other valuables. I don't believe the problem is purely a Nigerian one, other nationalities are affected. Thieves' dont discriminate...

planet1899, don't trivialise; it is a warning to beware, and it is a valid warning. Pick pocketing is a big problem at the aforementioned venues particularly at Oxford Street.

The British Police are fighting it, but with little success because the people involved know how to exploit the law to their advantage when they are caught; they are mainly teenagers or people who claim to be teenagers with no fixed address; and a different law applies to arresting and detaining teenagers. The parents and adults behind these pick pockets stay in the background and watch out for potential victims and the police.

Shoppers at these venues should be on their guard if they suddenly find a group of people acting like a happy family of shoppers around them: they are not always, what they seem.

In addition, if you are buying any electronic goods, don't tell the dealer that they are for export. Alternatively, get the dealer to set it up and do a demo for you, and make sure that you see it re-packed. Dealers are known to sell rejects for export, knowing fully well that the goods might not be returned back because of the cost of returning it.

Fellow villagers, We must all rejoice that our government is at last becoming more caring and responsive to our needs – please don't take me up on this statement, but we must not see the actions of our government as a tit for tat; and even if it were a tit for tat, our government must still not be seen to be reacting to the actions of other governments: it must be seen to be positive i.e. doing what is best for Nigerians around the world.

The other day it was CNN and now a "travel warning". Am I dreaming?

Peep Peep Peep Hurray to Nigeria!

At long last!!

One was tempted to ask the Nigerian government why it took them so long to realize the importance of communication in this direction...but then, as an adage goes, it's better late than never.

It's often ridiculous that almost on daily basis, one gets to read and hear the many western nations, notably the United States issue some so-called travel warnings to its citizens as regards Nigeria. Whereas, the U.S., England and many of those western nations have nothing fantastic to write home about in terms of security. It's indeed a joke that the US, for instance, where cold-blooded murders, rapes, muggings, home invasions and other crimes occur every second will have the temerity to warn its citizens of "crimes" in Nigeria. For about two times in a row, Baltimore (Maryland), has been "awarded" the title of the murder capital of the world. This "award" had, in the past been won by New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Yet, the States dept will be making noise about Lagos.

But then, this has always been part of the American government orientations toward brainwashing their citizens. Every American is made to feel that there is no other world outside of the US. Even the Blacks are made to be grateful for not being in Africa in a bid to make up for their heritage of slavery. Generally, a typical American is ever made to appreciate his/her citizenship. This psychological strategy is indeed extended to the field of sports where a narrow sporting event such as baseball is referred to as "the world series" even though the said series is only taking place in America.

I welcome Nigeria to 21st century politics.

For years they west has played us with ridiculous inciting warnings about us, some of which are nothing more than an attempt to ridicule and tarnish the reputation of many African countries.

Nigeria should issue travel warnings about terrorist threats in America and Britain, these places are more likely to be bombed by fundamentalist for their involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as we have seen on a few occasions. There are probably more home grown terrorists in America and Britain than there are in Africa.

Nigeria should issue travel warnings about British hospitals because of the epidemic of MRSA and other infectious diseases circulating in the wards of many UK clinics.

Nigeria should issue travel warnings about possible racist attacks by white extremists in many western countries like Germany, France and the US.

Nigeria should issue travel warnings about paedophile activities in white countries, these days Nigerians should be wary of who they leave their children with in many western societies due to the number of sick people targeting little children for sex.

The list is endless, if these people can issue travel warnings about Nigeria for silly things like 419 activities then we should be prepared to alert our citizens to the heinous activities of these so-called perfect countries.

The Nigerian Government should bury its head in shame. Is miscreants' matter the main issue? We have seen the name of Nigeria and Nigerians quagmired for so long that we have lost count.

The way the authorities in the UK treat Nigeria and Nigerians is the main issue. Stop wondering in the bush. Anyway it is not bad to start this late. The government and especially the High Commissions should be consistent henceforth.

Hi, folks!

I am a living victim of all of what Palamedes has just revealed about the unacceptable face of targeted criminality in the United Kingdom, the EU, and the USA.

Most frightening is the new wave conspiracy between certain cavalier staff of the diplomatic missions of the USA, the UK, and the EU in Abuja (and Lagos) to entrap Nigerians who have personal bank accounts in their countries, by deliberately frustrating their visa applications at minimum excuse, while concurrently coordinating with conniving staff of their victim’s bankers in the USA, or the UK, or the EU, specifically to drain the victim’s account dry, thereafter.

So, for those of you Nigerians who are not physically resident in the UK, or the EU, or the USA, but, for whatever reasons (maybe colonial mentality), still maintain personal bank accounts, please be warned! This is because you may never gain access to your hard earned so-called “foreign account” again after leaving their country, since they can always cut off your links to their country at their pleasure, all in the name of “strict immigration and visa controls”.

Consequently, I am appealing to all my Nigerian friends with bank accounts in the UK, the USA, and the EU, but are no longer permanently physically resident in any of those countries, to please quickly shut down their accounts, and avoid being entrapped by the “visa-office-overseas-bank” criminal cabals that regularly conspire to withhold visa applications of Nigerians, for the sole purpose of dispossessing their Nigerian victims of their savings overseas, all under the pretext of stiff immigration policies.

You have been warned. Beware of the UK, EU, and USA embassy visa-hoarding 419 mafia. They all have private links to your bankers in their countries!

Le han advertido. ¡Guárdese! Muchas gracias.
