Nigerian Government Attacks CNN’s “Jaundiced” Report On Nigerians.
  (The Times of Nigeria)
The Nigerian government has lashed out at US media giant Cable News Network, CNN, for its unflattering portrayal of Nigerian citizens in a piece titled “How to rob a bank.” The federal government called the report “a malicious and denigrating portrayal of Nigeria based on the alleged criminal activities of a few Nigerians supposedly resident in the United States, particularly in Houston.”

The government called on CNN to “take urgent steps to redress this jaundiced, unbalanced and insulting feature on Nigeria.” The Minister of information and national orientation, Frank Nweke Jr. complained that the CNN report singled out the Nigerian community in the United States, and by implication all Nigerians, for denigration.

“Indeed, out of about 10 persons prominently cited as being involved in this criminal ring only two are non-Nigerians and the CNN, ostensibly to make the report credible, featured a Nigerian ex-convict, who out on the grace of plea bargaining, pronounced that the Nigerians that are involved with fraud in America will be at least 40 percent of the criminals. It is indeed curious that CNN could anchor such a report on the testimony of someone so circumstanced, who in any case would say anything to remain in the good books of his benefactors.” Nweke said.

“The problem with reports such as CNN’s which make wild claims like this is that they violently assault the sensibilities of legion of Nigerians who, ironically and in a phenomenal way, are positively changing the fortunes of the United States. Besides, in a profound but uncharitable manner, this report also reinforces false perceptions and restates stereotypes, and in an excruciating manner tends to attenuate the resolve and undermine the efforts of the Nigerian government to stamp out criminal activities. But this assault will not stop Nigeria’s determination to combat all manner of criminal activities, including trans-border crimes.”

According to Nweke, Nigeria is known to have one of the most draconian laws on fraud and associated crimes and it is one of the few countries where penalty for fraud and related offences is doubled for culprits.

“Increasingly, our Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and allied establishments have also collaborated with American law enforcement and intelligence agents to reduce international crimes. Hence, and as Nigerians know, it is not true as the report claims that ‘bribery and dishonesty at home explain what some Nigerians do abroad’” He said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has protested this assault on our dignity in writing to the Chief Executive Officer of CNN, the American Ambassador to Nigeria and the Counselor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy in Nigeria.

“Nigerians will soon have an opportunity to express their rejection of this unceasing penchant, of a section of the international media, for criminalizing and demonizing our beloved country.” Nweke concluded.

It's about time someone stood up to the racist commenatry by CNN and rebuke them. This is what we expect from the FGN and they should take it one step further by banning all CNN reporters from Nigeria as Iran did a while ago until they do a retraction and come to their senses that the word of a Nigeria criminal (who gave them the 40% figure) is not gospel. Good job.

Times are certainly changing; there is a first time for everything. I can't believe the Nigerian government is actually attacking the western media for negative depiction of Nigerians.

Wonders shall never end!

If this is true then it is a welcome development.

The government is responding too late, which goes to prove how government moves in Nigeria: at a speed slower than snail-speed. But sha, we can commend them small for even reacting. Better late than never.

At the risk of being harassed on this medium, I will like to ask Nigerians in diaspora how true it is that many of our compatriots are involved in various scams. Let's discountenance the 40% proportion quoted by CNN fo now, specifically, in your own views, what is the proportion of Nigerians that are involved in such dubious deals? Are Nigerians the most notorious for such things compared to other nationalities over there?

Hi, folks!

CNN, the voice box of the ventriloquist in the White House, Washington DC, does what it does to Nigeria because, NTA, the supposed voice box of Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, is pathologically inept, unimaginative, incompetent, inefficient, and absolutely hopeless.

One wonders what the Nigerian Embassy and the various consulates of the Nigerian government in the USA did to directly confront the affront from CNN when it happened. The belated response from the Federal Ministry of Information and national orientation (…ehmmm, one wonders what orientation exactly it is that they are try to force-feed Nigerians!) is doubly infuriating, to say the least.

Must Mr. Frank NWEKE (II) show the whole world how hopeless his ministry is?

Muchas gracias.

I've a bagful of newspaper reports regarding incidents of big time frauds perpetuated by westerners against their own countries, including those by corporations. CNN turns a blind eye to most of these incidents, preferring only to focus on those by Nigerians! Nigeria, the largest black community on earth represents everything black. In the fight against other cultures, therefore, western media targets Nigeria for obvious reasons just as it would Arab or Asian nations or culture.

Why don't our NTA do a documentary on such big time western rip offs as that committed by the fatcats at Enron for a change? We should go back to history and expose the greatest of all robberies on humanity as committed by western countries during colonial rule. Then we'd be able to know who the greatest bandits in history are.

The media in Nigeria should wake up and fight back. It's as though all the crimes committed on earth were by Nigerians!

It is part of the never-ending battle of cultures the West refuses to end. This must stop today! The EFCC and other enforcement organs in Nigeria should not relent in flushing off the few amongst us who prefer to go on 'whitemailling' the rest of us. Truth is, there are fraudsters in every country in equal numbers.

If you live abroad, you can count how many people u know that are involved in 419 schemes. Or if you live in Nigeria, is it 40% of people u know that live abroad are 419 schemers?

Most people don’t even listen to CNN has they have nothing to offer anymore, it such story that make people tune them out. When CNN first started, it was the leader especially in international news but for several years, due to shoddy reporting and idiocy it has lost viewers. I used to be glued to CNN years ago but not anymore.

Look, there are more 419 Americans than Nigerians. Americans scamming banks, old people, workers, employers or what have you. They are even scamming Nigerians with a Poetry newspaper where they have some Nigerian high school kids enter into some poetry competition. Once you send in your stupid poetry they will inform you that you won (every one wins: wink). They will then write you to send $45 so you can be published then you will win thousand of dollars. I knew about this scheme when a nephew wrote me to help him send the money to the group (of course I lectured him well, well.). There after I found out many Nigerian kids are falling into the hand of the Poetry scammers as well. I had to let my nephew inform all his friends to pass it around not to fall for the fraud.

America was founded on fraud, perpetuated on fraud, has millions of fraudulent people so even CNN is a fraudulent news outlet.
