Nigeria advances to 2nd round at worlds

By JIM ARMSTRONG, AP Sports Writer1 hour, 18 minutes ago

Ebi Ere scored 19 points as Nigeria defeated Lebanon 95-72 on Thursday and advanced to the second round of the world championships.

Nigeria (2-3) had six players score in double figures, ending Lebanon's chances to advance to the round of 16.

"This was our best game of the tournament," Nigeria coach Sam Vincent said. "The players were confident all along and we knew we'd be OK if everyone started clicking at the same time."

Lebanon, which also finished the preliminary round with a 2-3 record, upset France 74-73 on Wednesday and could have advanced to the second round with a win.

"Obviously, we were tired from the France game," said Lebanon's Rony Fahed, who had a team-leading 23 points. "Nigeria had a great game and I congratulate them."

The team was playing without American coach Paul Coughter, who missed the game with a pulmonary infection. Assistant coach Khalaf Koussay, a native of Iraq, took over for Coughter.

"At the last world championships, we lost all five games," Koussay said. "We won two games here and were competitive. We're proud and the Lebanese people are proud of us."

Lebanon was also playing without one of its best players, Paul Khoury, who had visa problems and was stranded in the United States.

"We went through a lot to get here," Fahed said. "We had the war, we couldn't prepare properly, some of our best players couldn't make it and our coach got sick. We wanted to qualify, but couldn't."

Chamberlain Oguchi hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third period to give Nigeria a 70-55 lead.

Gabe Muoneke and Julius Nwosu scored eight points each and Nigeria took a 47-33 lead into halftime.

..at least they are patriotic enough to wear the colors and strain their hearts out on the basketball court for Nigeria. That alone is commendable. Hopefully they enjoy the support of the government and the people of the Nigeria they represent all the way in Japan.

Auspicious.

Auspicious i totally agree with you. with all the happenings in the country it takes a lot to stand proud as a Nigerian. I give them a lot of kudos. I also hope a whole bunch of us would be inspired by their show of patriotism.

The beauty of this is that many of these players whose connections to Nigeria is only through their parents are putting everything in line for the country; while many that owe a lot to the country will do everything to denigrate it and tear her apart.

Go D'Tigers ojare. Lets show Dirk Nowistki and Germany how basketball is played.

Meanwhile folks, lets help one of our players win something. Click on this link and vote Josh Akognon as the best young player.

Dear Villagers,

I join to congratulate all that a game I am so passionate about is getting attention at the world stage with a 'Nigerians-in-Diaspora' team doing the Motherland proud. God help us that everything in our national-life is now going off-shore. Even the historic Federal Secretariat is now dedicated to 'those of us' abroad. I am not jealous, but all these throw-back of our anything foreign is truly getting on my nerves. We will not eat 'Baga fish' but will rather make 'stock fish' (Cod waste), a national delicacy. Please do not misunderstand me to mean that I mean my high quality-high speed off-shore compatriots are wastes. No, not all.

The new wave of lets all get them abroad is an outcome of the laziness and lack of work ethics engrained in our national lives. Coaches will not do their work and the administrators will never buy into anything without Dollar content. If Hakeem Olajuwon, Olumide Oyedeji and recently Ejike Obguaja will all make it to the peak in basketball - the NBA from our local fields, then if we are more painstaking, we can offer the world our best from Kano, Kaduna, Lagos, Port and all the vibrant basketball leagues. Only recently Supersports the South African cable-sports channel came to Nigeria and is raking millions from telecasting the Nigeria Basketball league. Ask me what NTA is giving the 8 Million viewers it so proudly profiles. We now have to pay good 9 thousand Nigerian Naira if we are to watch any Nigerian sport, courtesy of DSTV-Multichoice. I watched Angola playing world class basketball with a constant painful reminder that the team is 95 percent local content, while ours is composed deep in national self-doubt.

The basketball team is coached by an American - Sam Vincent (not my hero) who has made it his point that you are only good for the team if you hold an American passport and have a Nigerian name. He has dropped our most patriotic player - Olumide Oyedeji, insinuating loyalty problems. Oyedeji presently players for 2 teams that are all national champions. The Samsung Tigers in South Korea and another one in Puerto Rico. He also has annual youth camps for our underpriviledge kids, of which some he has helped to settle in universities in the US. Its sad that an American would take a unilateral decision on a Nigeria team like that without being called to book. It worries me though that a team without depth but with some flucky-lucky disposition has won 2 matches at the world stage and we are making noise. The pain is that the team has better potentials than those presented. Let us see what Germany make of them on Sunday. Another pian arising from this match is that Oyedeji has been denied the opputunity to match his brother and former team-mate Dirk of Germany a titanic class. Oyedeji had lived with the Nowistkis as a youngster in Germany. The 2 were also sucessive Most Valuable Players (MVPs) of the Bundesliga, with Oyedeji doubling as the highest in rebounds.

Well, so far so good. The girls team, D'Tigress will be heating-up Samba nation - Brazil next month. I hope they will be given such good coverage by NVS. Senor Abraxas, You de there and your family?

As for NTA, not even one match of the world championship is shown. This is all in the vain-civil-service-induced-perception that soccer is our national sport. I challege all say na lie! Even the NFA chairman no know the names of Nigeria football teams.

I know some of my NVS buddies will kill someone if the girls matches are not featured. Psst - Auspicious! Na babes dem no wan show?

With the girls team and the boys both at the worls championship history is being made that 2 Nigeria teams have made it to the world stage and both captained by siblings - Ime Udoka and his sister Ufom Udoka.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hope I am coherent enough. Naija la wa!

NVS - Keep it going

This must be a joke. Besides coupists and fanatic murdering muslims, can you name one sport figure that ever can out of those two cities, just one.

And while at it, who is this Oyediji or whatever and why is he playing in Korea if he can ball?

Oga Ednut,

Am sorry I drew such unfortunate and unwarranted sentiment from you.

Please Goggle the name Olumide Oyedeji and you will know and see details of his achievements in basketball.

About sporting personalities from Kaduna and Kano, you must have heard of these few:

Kano.

Inuwa Lawal Rigogo - Of Green Eagles fame
Joseph Yobo
Aisha Mohammed (Goggle also)
Ibrahim Galadima - former NFA Chairman

For football teams, you may have heard of Raccah Rovers, Kano Pillars, Dantata United among others.

Sani Abacha Stadium and Sabon Gari Township Stadiums are of International standard.

Kaduna.

Dahiru Sadi
The Babangida brothers
The Babayaro brothers
Daniel Amokachi
Rashidi Yekini
Garba Lawal
Tajudeen Oyekanmi

For football teams , there are Ranchers Bees, Kaduna United and a number of others. Ahmadu Bello Stadium and Rancher's Bees Stadium are super.

But then, when I speak of Kaduna and Kano, am speaking in basketball term. Those cities I mentioned are among the leading centres of basketball in Nigeria. There are basketball teams like Kano Pillars, AHIP and Immigration in the Premier League in Kano, while in Kaduna, there are Kadda Stars, Kadda Princes, One Deevers' and the ladies GT 2000. Basketball in Nigeria is never complete without teams from these cities.

I hope you are better informed, now.

Isn't it a terrible shame that some of us still exhibit such depth of shallow hatred and ignorance, as evident in the comments above, in our comments about one another? The reason why we are where we are, despite our potential for greatness as a nation, is not far-fetched.

Auspicious.

Soja,

That’s Okey. I forgive U since today is Friday. TGIF.

Please Goggle the name Olumide Oyedeji and you will know and see details of his achievements in basketball.

If the guy is good, I will not need to google him.

Kano.

Inuwa Lawal Rigogo - Of Green Eagles fame

(Never heard of him for real. When was he a member of the eagles? Before or After 1980?

Joseph Yobo ( What is his middle name please?) Is he not of Eastern Nigerian parentage? Aisha Mohammed (Goggle also) Who is she and why do I need to google her if she is popular?
Ibrahim Galadima - former NFA Chairman (Okey this is like fronting Sani Abacha as a Nigerian leader. This is the guy that single handedly ruined our world cup chances and destroyed football management in Nigeria. Soja are you serious? He is one reason why people from places like Kano should never smell leadership of anything important in Nigeria if Nigeria is ever to progress.
<
B>For football teams, you may have heard of Raccah Rovers, Kano Pillars, Dantata United among others.

( I remember that name Raccah Rovers. Where they in Kano? Anyway they where there to help complete teams needed in the then Premier League. Never heard of the rest.)
Sani Abacha Stadium and Sabon Gari Township Stadiums are of International standard.

(Soja, you guys need to change the name of that Sani Abacha Stadium. But how can this stadium be of international standard, unless you mean the standard in Mali and Niger republic. Is it up to FIFA standard?)
Kaduna.

Dahiru Sadi. (Never heard of this person. Do I need to google him/her too?)The Babangida brothers (Okey if Tijani is from Kaduna and not Plateau, I give you that. I have seen the little guys a few times and he was fast and was good. He has a footballing brother too?The Babayaro brothers. (Celestine is an Imo State boy. I still can never understand why that fool is using an Hausa last name. Shame. Don’t know he has a footballing brother too.) Daniel Amokachi (From the East.)
Rashidi Yekini (Yoruba boy).
Garba Lawal. ( He is not a good footballer and makes the team because of quota system in Nigerian Sports.)
Tajudeen Oyekanmi( Yoruba boy am sure although I have never heard of him too.)

For football teams , there are Ranchers Bees, Kaduna United and a number of others. Ahmadu Bello Stadium and Rancher's Bees Stadium are super. <

I>(Never heard of any of the teams listed.)-
But then, when I speak of Kaduna and Kano, am speaking in basketball term. Those cities I mentioned are among the leading centres of basketball in Nigeria.

They play basketball in Nigeria outside Lagos? Where are the arenas that these teams play at and who goes to the games besides you Soja and the players?

There are basketball teams like Kano Pillars, AHIP and Immigration in the Premier League in Kano, while in Kaduna, there are Kadda Stars, Kadda Princes, One Deevers' and the ladies GT 2000. Basketball in Nigeria is never complete without teams from these cities.

The Ladies GT 2000? Since you have to wear shots to play these games, what do the ladies in Kano and Kaduna wear to play these games?

I hope you are better informed, now.

Anyway my African brother, thanks for the attempt.
