Moyes Should Apologize to Nigerians Print E-mail

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE:

We are scandalized by the insult of the Nigerian people and nation by the manager of Everton Football Club, Mr. David Moyes.

Mr. Moyes was speaking to reporters following his club’s UEFA Round of 16 match on 21 February, which Everton won 6-1.  Three of those goals came from Mr. Ayegbeni Yakubu, who is one of three Nigerian players in the club.

Supposedly praising that sparkling performance, Mr Moyes said, “What people don’t appreciate is that he’s only 25, albeit a Nigerian 25, and so if that is his real age he’s still got a good few years ahead of him.”

We assert that there is no such thing as Nigerian, Scottish or Canadian age.  If Yakubu’s age bothered Mr. Moyes, he should have considered that before signing up the player.  But to bring up the subject on the day the player fulfils ever striker’s dream by scoring a hat trick—in a European cup competition nonetheless—and then make this irresponsible remark is an affront to every Nigerian, everywhere.

We believe the Everton manager ought to savor his victory without inflicting his prejudice on an innocent people, many of whom are supporters of Everton.

We protest this national insult, and call on Ambassador Dozie Nwanna, Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, to immediately demand an apology of Mr. Moyes.  Nigerians all over the world can call Mr. Nwanna at the High Commission’s number: +44-0207 839 1244.

As far as football is concerned there is indeed a Nigerian age and a true age. The two are different for Nigerian footballers. Mr. Moyes is therefore right, even though a coach should know better than to cast aspersions of dishonesty on his player in public. We Nigerians know how old our players truly are. Unfortunately or fortunately, the rest of the world now knows that out players' declared age are not their true age.

There is no need to play the ostrich on this one.

The author seems naive about Nigerian soccer. Moyes obvious is not. Stop making unecessary noise abeg!

In truth, this insult presents difficult moral situation for us as Nigerians, I think it's better ignored and forgotten.

Afterall, we know ourselves.

Dear Concerned Nigerians,

Thank you for your observations on the aspersions cast on the age of Mr Yakubu Ayegbeni. However, the call on Nigerians all over the world to call Mr. Nwanna at the High Commission’s number: +44-0207 839 1244 is laughable and I doubt whether you guys live in London. Calling the Nigerian High Commission on true matters of ones’ nationality, like the renewal of passports or getting them to act in protecting the interests of Nigerians in the UK, has always been an uphill struggle and virtually impossible, unless you have the right connections – if you catch my drift! Please...now you are asking us to call the High Commission because Mr Moyes has insulted us. Where we have true representation, they would have picked that up themselves and there is no need to remind them to do a simple job for which they are amply rewarded.

Please ask our people to call on the Nigerian High Commission to stop supporting the jamboree embarked upon by the discredited Maurice Iwu, who was provided a platform to launder his battered superintendence of the last election at The Royal Commonwealth Society, Thursday 21ST February 2008, an event supported by the Nigerian High Commission & Ben TV. We can excuse Ben TV but not the Nigerian High Commission. The Nigerian High Commission needs to improve on the way it deals with, and represents, Nigerians in the UK. Anyone interested in wasting their time calling the High Commission about Mr Moyes’ Comments is welcome to do so. I am sure most of us here have better things to do with our time.

By the way, Ayegbeni Yakubu sure looks younger than 25 to me. What is the fuss? This is, in any event not a matter that the High Commission can threaten to do anything except to huff and puff for nothing. If sued, Mr Moyes can easily plead fair comment and justification and present evidence why it would be justified to make such comments about a Nigerian player. I beg, let us be real and tidy our own house: if we have not been caught napping a few times in that area, would the likes of David Moyes have the nerve to say what he has said? Students of criminal law, no matter how distant and ignorant about Nigeria, know that there is something called 419 with its origin in Nigeria. One can go on.....political corruption, et al! Let David Moyes be. Let us start telling the truth too about our players and take things from there. Truly, haven't we got better things to be addressing? I just ask o!

@Concerned Nigerians

I appreciate your concern and effort but read the few commentaries before mine and you wonder why some of us feel so sad for our country. You can always be certain that there will be more Nigerians defending the other side than their own country. I wonder if they would react the same way if “Nigeria” is replaced with the name of their tribe.

Yes we Nigerians joke about Nigerian age but we are Nigerians. This is not an invitation to outsider to join in our jokes; we should feel offended when outsiders made offensive remarks about our country. The British like the French and Germans make jokes about themselves but equally take offence to offensive remarks by outsiders.

I shall be be calling the NHC to register my protest, and thank you.

Chief Palamedes don’t waste your time on stupid Yakubu who could not score an open play goal against 10man Ghana and now he is scoring a hat-trick in Everton. Anything Moyes says about him, it serves him right. See yakubu see 22/ 11/ 1982 as date of birth? Na beans???

The level of self-hate among Nigerian is understandable, but its depth is really disturbing.
Only a people with very low self-esteem will hail and even join foreigners in degrading their own country.

And only a mentally retarded person will make a statement such as the following

Students of criminal law, no matter how distnat and ignorant about Nigeria, know that there is something called 419 with its origin in Nigeria.

As far back as 1987, I read a book titled Dirty Money, at the state library in Calabar. In the book details of financial crimes perpetrated around the world, and especially by Americans, from time immemorial were vividly discussed. Mind you when I say vividly discussed I mean it in the accademic sense, with detailed and verifiable references. And when I say time immemorial, I mean the time when nobody has ever dreamt of an entity called Nigeria coming into exixtence. In the book it was claimed that about a third of the money circulating in America, as well as about half of financial papers in exixtence in America is of "unclean origin". Unclean meaning, fake, stolen, laundered and so on. Furthermore, nobody could do anything about it because attempting to do so will simply result in the collapse of the American economy.

So Nigerian self-haters, please always think again before you make your self-destructive, but factually incorrect comments.

How many Nigerian athlets have been caught or disgraced for doping? How many have been prosecuted for cheating in urin testing et cetera? And why are people not going around disparaging the countries of those caught and punished? Please fellow country men and women, "C caution and Apply"

C caution and apply D!! yes i agree with you but what we are saying here is that YAKUBU lied about his age and IT IS A FACT. facts are sacred and cannot be manipulated no matter how hard you try. The Moment Nigerians stop Age-cheating in football, the sky will be our limit. there are thousands of soccer talents we can discover in Nigeria, from Onikan to Adamasibga... from Enugu to Aba.. from Owerri to P/H.. from Kano to Jos, there are thousands of young nigerians whom we can groom from the young age and not using 30 year old players to Play under-17 tourneys. THAT ACT DRAWS OUR FOOTBALL BACK!!! DONT YOU GET IT!!!
