Man Utd to play Pompey in Nigeria

United's top stars are on their way to Nigeria

Manchester United will travel to Nigeria to play fellow Premier League side Portsmouth in a friendly in July.

The match between the Premier League and European champions and the FA Cup holders will give Nigerian fans the chance to see their heroes in person.

The precise date and venue have yet to be determined, although the game will take place in Abuja.

United will fly in after the completion of their pre-season tour to South Africa, which ends on 26 July.

"Sir Alex (Ferguson) and the team are always keen to visit new places," United's Chief Executive David Gill told a news conference.

"This match will give an opportunity for our many fans in Nigeria to see the team in the flesh and will provide a climax to our summer tour.

Nigeria fans may soon be kitted out in red, not green
"Our own research has shown Nigeria is home to our fourth largest fan base - some 13.6 million supporters - so this is an opportunity for us to say thank you to those fans."

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp revealed the plan after his side's triumph in the FA Cup.

Pompey have several African players, notably Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka.

United may have the Angola star Manucho with them by the time of the game.

He has been on loan to Panathinaikos, but is hopeful of moving to Old Trafford, once he has a work permit for the UK.

The match will be a preview of the Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season, which is played between the League champions and FA Cup holders.

If Reuben Abati's article is anything to go by, I smell blood flowing in Nigeria BUT I hope it doesn't get to that point. I mean if Nigerians died because of the Champions league final, what are we talking about?

Kila gbe, ki le ju? (what did we steal, what are you throwing at us?)

Nigerians are crazy football lovers and I can imagine the bets, the fights, the roforofo arguments and the unneccessary cow slaughtering that will precede and follow this game. The war of jerseys nko?

The recent SA-Nig match in Abuja Stadium revealed that the Nigeria FA can rise to the occasion in terms of security arrangements.

For the Man U-Pompey match, anything short of that on/ off the arena may be unpalatable.

But who will do the control on the streets and at joints?

Is there any way to0 learn from how this brand was sold to the Nigerian mind? Has anyone read anything about Diffusion of innovations? Do you notice how the names of 'well placed Nigerians' are dropped to buttress the point that this is a very acceptable thing to do .
I hope our communication experts will learn from this and help us accept our own products. Somehow without doing anything Nigerians accepted the so called Nollywood but have we all come to terms with the concept of Nigeria as a nation? So what does Nigeria mean to you?

Reminiscent of our colonial mentality, we are bringing two top notch clubs to play in Nigeria without any local content input. Why is Eyimba and Kano Pillars (Nigerian Premier League Winner) not part of this friendly match? Maybe these cotton - wrapped players are fearful that they would be chopped down by our local football players like butchers. Whoever organised this match has not thaught it through, 'cos these two teams will play against each other in Nigeria an cart away revenue in gate takings and shirt sales while our local football teams do not benefit from the initiative. In other countries that such matches have been organised, the likes of Man U usually play local teams. Why Portshmouth? Whichever way you look at it, Nigeria is indeed a loser in the end!!:rolleyes:

In the face of power and energy problems, lack of basic infrastructure, and poor condition of living, Nigerians would proved the again that they are the happiest people on earth!

Suffering and smiling!
