The new 50, 20, 10 and 5 naira denominations
The new notes have their values written in Nigeria's three major languages, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. The old notes will be phased out after a certain period.

Lower-denomination naira notes and coins in Nigeria have had a makeover, making them smaller, lighter and more durable. Some in the capital said the notes "look like hard currency".

The bank says the new 50, 20, 10 and 5 denominations have the added bonus of being "extremely difficult to forge". Higher 1,000, 500, 200 and 100 notes remain unchanged.

Looks good. Reflects Nigerianess but for the abscence of the minority languages which ought to have been squeezed in. Good riddance to the Arabic inscriptions. Hope the value will be improved by our collective hard work and less corruption.
Otherwise a good starting point.

I applaud Charles Soludo and his CBN team for pulling this off. However, as we all know, all that glitters is not gold. The new shine on the bank notes and coins will only mean something when it is matched and supported by a quantum leap in productivity (higher GDP) outside of the oil sector, which should increase the value of the Naira relative to other currencies.

How I wish the near-revolutionary re-engineering taking place in the banking sector was happening in the electrical power generation and distribution sector. This critical missing factor is the reason the economy is not going anywhere fast and why the new Naira will not matter in the grand scheme of things.

Sad but true!

I can still remember the last time Nigeria changed the face of the Naira. Petty traders at Ipodo and even Tejuoso would refuse to accept the old notes.
As a matter of fact, they were willing to offer huge discounts if you were paying with the new notes.

I hope that there is an awareness campaign this time to let everyone know that the values remain the same.

A good way to continue. I'm proud of this. This GIANT called Nigeria will surely rise again very soon, and never to fall again. Ki a ni l'owo, ki a ma ni lorun (May we have the money at hand/pocket and not in debts-Amen).

Nkire, I agree with you completely here.

On a certain level, I must confess that OBJ has really tried, in his attempts to put round pegs in round holes - as it regards getting our country back on track. He was able to get relatively young, incredibly bright and capable hands to attempt to turn things around. I must give him kudos for this.

However, his attempts at reforms have been seriously bogged-down by three major factors.

1. The extent of corruption and infrastructural decay he met, when he assumed power, was such that some of these reforms being carried out now, if sustained, would take at least another ten years to show tangible results. For example, the problem of power (electricity) in Nigeria, is directly traceable to the incidence of monumental corruption in the system. It is the same reason why a major oil-producing country has to resort to fuel importation.

2. Baba has not been able to shake-off the perception and weighty allegations that he really 'economically-reformed' himself, whilst genuinely trying to reform the country, at the same time. This may have had the indirect effect of subtly encouraging all the corrupt elements that constitute (collectively) a cog in the wheel of progress.

3. His personal quarrel with Atiku has led him to take certain decisions, indulge in certain activities, and generally conduct himself in such a manner that it takes off some of the shine off his more salient achievements.

Although, the road to hell is said to be paved with good intentions (I dont know, since I've not been to hell before :) ), all in all, I sincerely believe OBJ means well for Nigeria.

He just got consumed in the crazy politics and started playing his hands rather badly.
