3 former state governors in Nigeria charged in court for corruption

Friday, July 13, 2007

ABUJA, Nigeria: Three former state governors in Nigeria were charged in court on Friday with money laundering and stealing public funds.

Orji Uzor Kalu and Saminu Turaki, the former governors of Abia and Jigawa states were taken into custody on Wednesday. Along with Joshua Dariye, the former governor of Plateau state previously in custody, they were charged in the capital, Abuja, with multiple counts of stealing public funds and money laundering.

No pleadings were made in the brief court appearance before their cases were postponed until Monday.

The former governors risk a minimum of seven years in jail if convicted on any of the charges.

Prosecutors working for the Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have pledged to bring to trial former governors accused of corruption who enjoyed constitutional immunity from prosecution while in office.

Nigeria is regularly rated one of the most corrupt countries in the world by Berlin-based watchdog Transparency International.

Despite generating hundreds of billions of dollars in oil revenues since gaining independence from Britain in 1960, living standards have fallen and most Nigerians scrape by on less than US$2 (€1.45) a day. There is virtually no reliable source of electricity or potable water, and few citizens have access to health care or decent education.

Nigeria's new president, Umaru Yar'Adua, vowed to root out corruption after taking power in April in elections widely discredited by international and domestic observers.

Joshua Dariye has had a rollercoaster career

Two Nigerian ex-governors have appeared in court for alleged corruption and money laundering.

Joshua Dariye, who skipped UK bail three years ago, was arrested by the anti-graft agency earlier on Friday.

Saminu Turaki was arrested on Wednesday and faces similar charges, which they both deny.

They lost their immunity from prosecution when they stood down after elections in April. Nigeria's governors have considerable powers and budgets.

Mr Dariye is accused of embezzling nearly $9m in public funds during his eight-year reign as governor of central Plateau State.

DARIYE TIMELINE
<*>July 2007: Charged with corruption
<*>May 2007: Stands down
<*>April 2007: Returns to office
<*>March 2007: Wins appeal
<*>November 2006: Impeached
<*>December 2004: Wins appeal against Nigerian charges
<*>December 2004: Skips UK bail
<*>December 2004: Charged in Nigerian court
<*>November 2004: Returns to office
<*>September 2004: Arrested in UK on money-laundering charges
<*>May 2004: Sacked for failing to halt ethnic clashes
<*>April 2003: Re-elected
<*>April 1999: Elected governor of Plateau State

The former governor had fled the country shortly after he stepped down in May, before later returning.

He was impeached last November but won an appeal and returned to take power in April for three weeks before his term of office expired.

He was first sacked in 2004 when then President Olusegun Obasanjo said he had been "weak and incompetent" in his handling of communal clashes.

Mr Dariye is among several ex-governors the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been investigation on corruption allegations.

On Wednesday, the EFCC arrested two of them and questioned three others, who are also expected to be charged soon, the commission says.

The other former governor arrested on Wednesday was Orji Kalu. He was taken to court on Friday but then returned to custody, while the authorities prepare further charges against him.

Under Nigerian law, sitting governors have immunity from criminal prosecution.

Thank you for the, well good news! But, I won't believe anything until I see these
ex-governors and Obasanjo are actually in a maximum security JAIL. Nothing else will
do. To prosecute these ex-governors with Obasanjo walking free is absolute
foolishness. Until the fat lady sings, nothing else will count.

When the mosquito arrived at the nudist colony, it looked around and proclaimed: "I know what I have to do, the problem is where do I begin?"

Nuhu, I have a feeling that you are going to have to "bite" a whole lot of people. I'm rooting for you!

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but there's absolutely nothing new here.

--As long as the man, OBJ who came to power with #20,000 and after 8 years now has billions or more, is gallivanting around as mr. Clean, then Ribadu is a clown.

--As long as "Andy" who laundered money via the presidential jet is walking around free, Ribadu is a clown.

--As long as Annenih and Bode George who stole us blind are calling the shots, Ribadu is a clown.

--As long as Odili and Ibori remain untouchables, Ribadu is a clown.

The list is very, very long. And how clean is Ribadu himself?

AS THE IGBO SAY, NO ONE TELLS THE DEAF AND DUMB THAT WAR HAS BROKEN OUT. So, when the real war on corruption starts, no one will need to tell us because we will see it in action. For now, Ribadu is just finishing the dirty job he started for Obasanjo.

Ka Chineke mezie okwu!

The point has been made here before that NVS should not be turned into a place for perpetuating beer parlour gossip. Someone did mention that articles and comments from here are being quoted far and wide and we should attempt to reason and write with some intellectual input. People who say that Obj had 20,000 Naira in 1998 make such statements and it is gradually being accepted as truth.

Facts that are easily verifiable on google put this and such stories to lie. The Bells secondary school fully owned by Obj before he went to Prison in 1995 was one of the most elite schools in Nigeria and was certainly worth more than 20,000 Naira IN 1998.

Obj by virtue of donations he got from friends was able to donate 130 million to the PDP in 1998 BEFORE he became president.

I may be wrong, but I think that whatever is appreciated increases in value and as such Nigerians who wish to see a better future should appreciate Ribadu's efforts rather than look for avenues to rubbish the anti corruption battle by saying unless such and such is arrested and tried I wont buy into what Ribadu is doing.

It is mental laziness to reject the fact that this Ribadu that is now cleaninsing Nigeria to an extent could only have been this efficient because he had the backing of Obj. Obj took some hard decisions which brought pains but which are likely to bring gains in the future.

Finally, if NVS is going to be turned into an bj bashing vehicle, at least it should be done with finesse, not repeating what ignorant people say in beer parlours and motor parks.

@ ikegwuohac

If buying 200 million shares in a company that gets a lot of deals from the government you head is not corruption, then tell me what is. If selling our refineries to the company you have N6 billion shares in is not corruption, then tell me what is

Ribadu's crusade is against men who are in OBJ's bad books but I shed no tears for them. They are all fingers on a rotten hand. Until the day Uba is brought to bbok and OBJ shows us his tax returns for the period he was in power, I will continue to believe the beer parlour stories!
