Muammar Gaddafi always travels with his female bodyguards
Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has been involved in a diplomatic incident as he arrived in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, for a summit.

Nigerian officials say Col Gaddafi was accompanied by more than 200 heavily armed Libyan bodyguards.

When security officers refused to allow them to keep their weapons, an argument ensued and Col Gaddafi stormed off.

Only when Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo intervened did the bodyguards agree to hand in their weapons.

Foreign ministers from Africa and Latin America have been preparing for the summit which gets under way on Thursday.

The size of Libya's delegation was not a problem, it seems, just the sheer amount of weapons and ammunition they carried.

So Nigerian security refused to let them proceed to the capital.

As arguments raged, the Libyan leader angrily set out on foot to walk some 40km to the capital, before he was persuaded to return to the airport lounge.

Intervention

By sheer coincidence, President Obasanjo was passing through the airport at the same time.

He intervened in person and proposed that the weapons could be allowed through if they were registered first.

But the Nigerians say that was rejected and the Libyan delegation threatened to fly home.

Incensed, the Nigerians said that was fine with them and told the delegation that instead of the original compromise, they could now only carry eight pistols if they wanted to enter Nigeria, like any other diplomatic security detail.

They ordered that the rest of the weaponry had to be put back on the Libyan official jet.

After a stand-off lasting several hours, the Libyans backed down and finally made their way to Nigeria's capital.

.and this is consistent with my eyeballs-to-eyeballs policy... as between Nigeria and the rest of the world!

But wait, wait, wait Big K, how many guards and guns are the Americans allowed to bring into Nigeria when an American president visits Nigeria? (Does the eight pistol rule apply to the Americans as well? Have the Americans been made to comply in the past?) And ditto the European leaders from say, Britain, France etc? I hope that such exclusionary rule has universal application to ALL our visitors! And not just applied to fellow Africans and Arabs alone.

As for Libya and Gaddaffi versus Nigeria/Nigerians, I used to have respect for Colonel Gaddaffi, but what with the recent horror stories regarding the fate of Nigerians in Libya? I am informed that Black Africans are treated with disparity and negatively... compared with their Arab immigrants counterparts.

What in the world was he doing with 200+ fully-armed bodyguards? And if he is that concerned about his safety, then how come the guards didn't completely shield him all over as he was descending from the aircraft. Or doesn't he realize how vulnerable he was from that picture, and how easy it is for some assasin to take him out with a telescopic silencer?

Anyway, I fully support the moves by the airport officials. My only concern, now, is that Ghadaffi might decide to transfer the aggression to Nigerian citizens living in Libya; you know, like a revenge for the 'embarassment' he just suffered in Abuja. Don't be surprised if a plane-load of Nigerians are suddenly deported to Lagos/Abuja within a couple of months.

The Colonel started this by bringing 200 single women into Abuja just like that.. Aahn-ah. Look, Bodyguard or not, the word went out last night to the SSS to make sure the babes are disarmed ASAP as they touch down in Abuja. Since the boys will be on the prowl tonight, it will be safer if the ladies are far away from their AK-47s. The Colonel needs at most 15 guards, the rest will be taken good care of. The ladies will enjoy themselves in Abuja. By the way, before you all start praising OBJ, understand that 3 of the babes have already been reserved for the Villa.

Ghadaffi is funny. They should have let him walk!

I say well done to the airport guys. If I could recollect, I think Gadhafi did something similar during Abacha era and there was this cry about our security lapse and this may explain why these guys did what they did to him yesterday.
